Batu Bolong is easily one of Komodo's best sites, weather you're diving or snorkeling, there is always so much to see. From the immaculate hard coral reef which extends from the to well beyond recreation dive limits that literally bursts with fish life, to the larger fish like giant trevally who form big congregations, and of course all the giant sea-turtles who live on this small rock in the middle of the Komodo.
China shop is one site in Komodo that is often overlooked, but I have never been able to figure out why. Located in the north of the park, it is the perfect site for snorkeling or diving. It’s shallow reef is a mixture of hard coral, sponges, and giant coral bommies. The reef itself extends for hundreds of meters as it fringes the island. Mantas are frequent visitors to this site as they like to feed in the channel between the two islands, while green sea-turtles and hawksbill sea-turtles have made their homes in the reef. Whether you’re diving or snorkeling, you can’t go wrong with this site as it offers something for everyone!
At the height of the Great Barrier Reef’s yearly coral spawning event, this little Christmas Tree worm decided it wanted in on the fun! As the waters of Barracuda Bommie was filled with the eggs and sperm of hopeful coral polyps, it too released its reproductive materials in the hopes of finding the spirobranchus giganteus of its dreams. Thanks to our local guru of being in the right spot at the right time, Shane ‘Sharky’ Down captured the amazing moment were this Christmas Tree coral released its reproductive Secret Santa gifts out into the world. 📸: Shane 'Sharky' Down 🦈
