Our 40 day, 5555 NM crossing of the Atlantic is just about done. We expect to arrive in Grenada just after midnight on the morning of the 29th. We were able to visit the island of St Helena for 3 days and the island of Fernando de Noronha for 2 days, but otherwise it’s been eat, sleep, sail, repeat. We’ve been on every point of sail and used every sail in our inventory EXCEPT the storm sail. We’ll do a recap soon, but we just wanted to send out a quick highlight. Want more? There’s no secret that loads of deliberate practice and coaching feedback have helped her achieve this consistency The leeward mark can be a place to either makeup or lose a lot of boats. Just having the basic techniques down can be the difference-maker. Oftentimes traffic will create opportunity as boat handling becomes more important than tactics. Being prepared for the mark rounding makes a big difference. It includes setting up the sail and having a wide entry. The objective is to be sailing on close-hauled as close to the mark as possible without hitting it on the exit. We prioritize the angles over the sheeting. Often mistakes are when people aren’t looking where they are going and attempting to sheet looking at their hands. That doesn’t mean sheeting isn’t important – it’s a skill that requires it’s own practice. We have loads of drills to help improve ‘hand over hand’ sheeting technique while watching where you are going. This dramatically increases results in boat handling techniques, such as the mark rounding. All of our clinics include boat handling techniques.
