From Helgoland to Den Helder, Anna was thrown straight into the deep end. After a tough fight with the harsh North Sea, we arrived in Holland completely exhausted. We took some time to explore Den Helder, connected with the vibe of the city, and our friend Jaime joined us for the next leg of the journey. After stocking up on supplies, we couldn’t delay - we had to keep moving forward, crossing the English Channel while our weather window was still open. We reached Cherbourg, discovering the city once developed by Napoleon, before the wind turned in our favor again and carried us toward the Bay of Biscay. It was cold, the season was already far behind us, and every mile mattered if we wanted to make it to the Canary Islands before Christmas. Offshore sailing this late in the year is never easy, but the adventure must go on. 🌊 If you enjoy the journey, don’t forget to subscribe and consider joining our Patreon crew for behind-the-scenes content and exclusive updates! Our North Sea sailing journey takes us from the Kiel Canal and Elbe River out into open water. We set course for Helgoland, our first real offshore passage with Zoé. The sea was calm, but Anna still struggled with seasickness, until a few birds lifted her mood. Little did we know, the real test with heavy seas and strong winds awaited us on the passage to Holland… We spent two days on Helgoland, hoping to see rare birds and stock up on duty-free supplies. Things didn’t quite go as planned and we left instead with just a few cans of food and a bottle of rum. The weather forecast promised nothing but gales for weeks. After much hesitation, we had to make the call: sail on to the Netherlands. The crossing to Den Helder was exhausting. After three exhausting, sleepless days at sea, we finally made landfall in Holland, tired but proud of the passage. Join us on this challenging leg of our sailing adventure, from Helgoland to Holland in heavy weather on the North Sea. 🌊 If you enjoy the journey, don’t forget to subscribe and consider joining our Patreon crew for behind-the-scenes content and exclusive real-time updates! Crossing the Kiel Canal by sailboat is a must-do passage for any sailor in Northern Europe. In this episode we set sail from Denmark in thick white fog and make our way to Kiel, Germany. After entering the Kiel Canal, we experience one of the most unique passages of our journey so far: the locking process and crossing the canal...under beautiful autumn sunshine. The most thrilling moment? Locking in at Brunsbüttel alone, in the dark fog. With zero visibility, it became one of the most surreal and unforgettable experiences in our sailing life! The Kiel Canal crossing is the shortcut between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, and for us it was a really a highlight of cruising in Northern Europe. If you’re planning a passage through the Kiel Canal, we hope this episode gives you a taste of the experience. 🌊 If you enjoy the journey, don’t forget to subscribe and consider joining our Patreon crew for behind-the-scenes content and exclusive updates! Our sailing adventure begins! In this episode, after two weeks of preparation we leave the harbour of Svendborg, Denmark, and officially start our circumnavigation around the world. It’s our very first sailing day with Zoé, heading towards Marstal on the island of Ærø. 🚢 A small but legendary Danish town, famous for its rich maritime history and traditional boatbuilding. It was the perfect place to equip Zoé with an anchor holder before continuing south towards the Kiel Canal. Join us as we share our very first sailing experience in Denmark, explore Marstal, and discover Peter’s fear of the 'evil' jellyfish. 🪼 Follow our adventure: 👉 Subscribe here: https://www.youtube.com/@ZoeOnTheWaves 🌐 Website: https://zoeonthewaves.com/ 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/zoeonthewaves/ 📘 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/zoeonthewaves/ 🤝 Patreon: https://patreon.com/ZoeOnTheWaves 💿 A Journey Begins CD: https://peterflamisch.com/store Intro music: Peter Flamisch & Viktor Szabó Music credits: http://www.epidemicsound.com Thank you for being here with us! Buying Our Sailboat in Denmark & Preparing for a Circumnavigation Voyage ⛵🌍 This is our story – and it all began in the harbor of Svendborg, Denmark. Here we bought our sailboat, Zoé and just three months later, moved aboard to start our sail around-the-world honeymoon in October 2024. We were already well past the sailing season and in a way, running late. Ahead of us lay the stormy North Sea and the Bay of Biscay. The boat was technically ready but we had no heating and no anchor holder, both still on our to-do list before heading into open waters. Join us as we share our first days on board, our journey from Denmark, and the preparations for a life of full-time sailing.
