If you’re turned on by steam engines or are simply interested in what it’s like in the famous Stockholm Archipelago, this is the video for you. The SS Blidösund is a hundred-year-old ship with her original engines, all maintained to top condition. She is quite superb and if, like me, you grew up with tales of engine drivers cooking their breakfast on the shovel in the firebox, you’ll see it happening for real in this engine room as well as some unique berthing techniques. If you’re interested in sailing, things maritime and the salty road to freedom, you'll enjoy my channel, so pour yourself a glass of the finest and settle down with my personal mixture of yarns and useful instructional material. When I’m away cruising, I never know when I'll get the opportunity to upload. If you can't wait, why not become a member of my website club? Sailing without an engine is always special, but when it’s aboard a hundred-ton Thames sailing barge in the running tides of Essex it’s a whole-life experience. Here, I sail with the consummate professionals who run Blue Mermaid for the Sea-Change Trust, helping disadvantaged people and particularly the young to connect with natural forces in the best way in the world. If you enjoy this video, take a look at a previous one I made aboard another Thames barge with the same skipper. Ever noticed how your headsail shape goes to rats when you ease the sheet? Here’s the answer, using techniques I learned on gaff cutters and am now using on my Bermudan sloop with Dyneema and modern slip rings. It’s easy to do and it really makes a difference. The time is past when we could all rely on a pin-point position from GPS. Depending on where we are and on the current global conflict situation, it is perfectly possible for us to lose our fix or suffer a spoofing, where our boat is shifted on the plotter screen to somewhere it isn’t. This throws us back on the almost-forgotten navigation axiom that all data must be corroborated. Anyone relying on a standard leisure chart plotter with no alternative form of backup will not be able to manage. In this video I explain how my partner and I have forged a fully professional solution to this growing threat. Watch on, then visit the AngelNav website. If you’re a thinking navigator, you’ll be fascinated. This is the story of how a boy hooked ondiving works his way to 500-feet deep saturation dives on North Sea platforms. Next, he’s heading a small diving company and now, 50 years after it all began, he’s the mainspring of Andark, one of Britain’s premier suppliers of water sports gear and the front running diver training establishment. If you’re feeling short of inspiration, take a deep breath and check out Andy Goddard. See what can be done. Three men with a dream, a real, old-fashioned shipwright and a Dunkirk Little Ship, literally saved from the chainsaw. Warrior was off the French beaches in 1940 salvaging what was left of the British army so we all can live free today. The guys are restoring her and, my word, they’re doing a proper job. Meet the guys, take a tour with me and Ned the master-craftsman and see the boat from her bones up. When the ensign appears you can almost hear the scream of the Stukas. I went down to an open day at Landau Marine in Southampton as a sailor, only to discover that their new premises are on the site where the first Spitfires were built in WWII. They had a Rolls Royce Merlin engine running - the engine which powered the Spitfire, the Hurricane, the Mosquito and the Lancaster bomber amongst others. To cap it all, we had a flypast of a Spitfire which brought a tear to my wife and camera-girl’s eye. Watch the video, turn up the sound, thrill to the sound of the Merlin, and you’ll find out why. Unlike most of the big singlehanded ocean races today, the Golden Globe Race is specifically for the sort of boat that was commonplace fifty years ago. At 33-36 feet, with long keels and a modest rig, they are sailed not by ‘rock-star’ racers but by ordinary people driven by a variety of motives to perform extraordinary feats. Gunnar Christensen from the States is in England preparing his boat for the next race. I went down to the marina in Lymington to find out what makes a man like this tick. I learned a lot. To keep the video to a YouTube-friendly length I’ve had to cut out some important passages such as his trim-tab self-steering arrangements with full redundancy onto a hydrovane, but nothing is ever perfect and there’s more than enough meat here to get your teeth into. Enjoy meeting this remarkable man, as I did. #Golden Globe Race, #yacht racing, #Tom Cunliffe, #Circumnavigation, #Gunnar Christensen If you’re interested in sailing, things maritime and the salty road to freedom, you'll enjoy my channel, so pour yourself a glass of the finest and settle down to listen to my occasional chats. The reciprocating steam engine is the very voice of romance at sea. Kipling watched it running and said he saw the hand of God. Here, I go to sea aboard the SS Shieldhall, the largest remaining steamer in Europe, with her all-volunteer crew and her remarkable captain. She’s maintained to the highest standards and she pays her own way with help from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Join a team of high-calibre seamen manoeuvring a proper ship, come below to see and hear the mighty connecting rods sailing though space, climb back up to the bridge to yarn with the captain, and note the website address to sail aboard yourself. ss-shieldhall.co.uk My thanks are due to Lewis Folland for his excellent video of the ship at sea. Ever looked at the night sky, noticed a super-bright star and wondered if it might be a planet? Here’s how to work planet coordinates, so that you can see what it is. If you’re far from the prime meridian (that’s at zero longitude, Greenwich, UK) you’ll have to do one more little sum because what you need to find is how far the planet is from your own meridian, not the one at Greenwich. If you’re in West longitude, you do this my subtracting your longitude from the Greenwich Hour Angle of the planet to find the Local Hour Angle, and off you go. Wondering what an hour angle is? Watch the video and find out. You’ll be enlightened, and if some of our neighbours in east longitude go on increasing their interference with GPS, we might all be glad of the knowledge. What we have here is a start. Ever fancied writing a novel? We’ve all got one in us, they say. So far, my books have been about the technicalities of sailing, maritime history or travel, but I just published my first nautical thriller and it’s getting rave reviews. Eel Pie Island was an iconic venue in the London music scene in the 1960s, but in this video I’m visiting the place to meet a man who is an eight-year survivor of pancreatic cancer. Chesil Beach is a huge, open sweep of shingle running west from the Bill of Portland in the English Channel. In the days of square riggers, it was a dreaded lee shore on which ships would become embayed in heavy southwesterly weather, to be wrecked in the cruel seas on the beach. My visit had a special family connection going back to World War II. This is Part 2 of the video I made with Steve the Camera and Ben the surveyor about how we all sometimes get tired of boats costing loads of money. They don’t have to, and for the person prepared to work hard and use initiative, it’s sometimes surprising what can be found lurking in the back of boatyards all over the western world. We just have to think outside the box. I suggest you watch Part 1 first. There you are, casting off the mooring, an hour or three from home, free at last. That’s when I remember the vital thing I forgot to bring. This video’s about what’s important not to forget. Your list will be different from mine, but you might get a laugh out of some of my mistakes. Watch on, and relate what you see to you own life… If you’re interested in sailing, things maritime and the salty road to freedom, you'll enjoy my channel, so pour yourself a glass of the finest and settle down with my personal mixture of yarns and useful instructional material. How do you mark your anchor cable? I like paint, but it doesn’t last for ever as it rattles in and out over the gypsy. Of course there are other methods, but whatever you choose, it’s too easy to forget it until the boat’s in the water, and then it’s too late. Here, my pal Richard and I tackle the job on my Mason 44. There’s a top tip on how to keep the paint on the chain not the boatyard floor, and I end up spinning a yarn about what happened to me when the marking failed. In this video, I meet a young woman passionate about the Arctic and what is happening to the climate up there. She has devoted three years of her life to finding a way of publicising the situation that people will understand. From a standing start with no boat and no money, Ella Hibbert now has a serious yacht and all the backup she needs to make a solo circumnavigation of the Arctic by the northwest and northeast passages. If the weather favours her, she plans to do it in a single season in 2025. Many of our veterans who’ve been out there securing our freedom in conditions most of us can’t really imagine come home in a damaged state. It might be physical, perhaps the loss of a limb, or it may be mental, but whatever it is they deserve our help. Turn to Starboard is a maritime charity that does just this. They’ve inspired me. Watch the video and perhaps you’ll feel the same. #sailing, #charity, #veterans If you’re interested in sailing, things maritime and the salty road to freedom, you'll enjoy my channel, so pour yourself a glass of the finest and settle down to listen to my occasional chats.
