In this episode I take you on board our family boat "Rogue" our 1964 Columbia 5.5 Meter. The footage is from one of our Wednesday night races in the Oakland Yacht Clubs Sweet 16 Series. We currently
In this new series of The Rogue Rigger I take you along on our campaign to go to the 5o5 World Championships in Hayling Island, England. The worlds start in July of 2026 so we have just a year and a half to go. Follow Mike and I on our journey to get to the world championships, from boat upgrades, practice days, regattas, debriefs and some shenanigans along the way. In this episode we take you onboard our 505 for this years Elvstrom Zellerbach Regatta hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club. Among the 505 fleet there is ILCA 6 and 7's, Melges 15's, Club 420's, RS Tera's and RS Fevas. The wind gods showed up for this event... Saturdays racing was cut short as the breeze was in the mid to high 30's with gust to the low 40's. Only half of the 505 fleet was able to complete the race. The rest of the fleets stayed postponed on shore. Saturday we were treated to four races in more typical San Francisco City Front conditions, the breeze was mid teens to low twenties. Solid flood tide with the usual reverse current close to shore. We had our moments with the top half of the fleet, as the day went on we kept making more mistakes. Our conditioning is not there yet and that is something we need to work on. Overall we made big gains. Finally able to hold our lane upwind and downwind we were able to consistently pass boats. Good times!
In this episode of the Rogue Rigger I take you for another ride on the Farr 400 Astra. This time we are doing our first offshore race, The 2025 Lightship Race. The start is on the San Francisco City front, then it goes 15 miles out the Golden Gate Bridge, then around the Lightship buoy that marks the entrance to the ship[ping channel. Finally a downwind blast to the finish on the city front. Good Times!
Join me, Ryan the Rogue Rigger on my journey of restoring a Mach 2 International Moth that I just picked up. I plan on upgrading it with all the modern systems with out breaking the bank and then I will take you along for the steep learning curve of learning to sail this Tasmanian devil of a boat. I have dreamed of owning one of these since they first came out back in 2008 when I got to take one for a spin. It was an unreal experience/feeling that I have been chasing ever since. At the time they were crazy expensive to buy and not in my budget. These days they are still crazy expensive to buy new, now there are a lot of older moths on the second hand market that are relatively affordable (Less than a Laser/ILCA in this case). For those of you who don't know, an International Moth is a single handed 11 foot long hydro foiling sailboat. These boats literally fly over the water on two hydrofoils doing speeds 2-3 times the speed of the wind. In this episode I rig up the Moth and go for another practice session, third time in a week. Im trying to get as much time on the water and keep climbing the steep learning curve. I lucked out with a beautiful day of 8-12 knots of breeze, lots of foiling, new top speed and plenty of swimming and crashes. Enjoy!

After my last session I realized that I needed to get in better shape to be able to tame this beast. Thats what I did, every day for the past month, I lifted weights, worked on my core, worked on my flexibility and my cardio. My body is ready and the weather gods cooperated for this beautiful day on the water filled with lots of foiling, swimming and crashes. Enjoy!

Follow Mike and I on our journey to get to the world championships, from boat upgrades, practice days, regattas, debriefs and some shenanigans along the way. In this episode we take you onboard our 505 for this years Spring Dinghy Regatta hosted by the Alameda Community Sailing Center. Normally this event is hosted by the St Francis Yacht Club, this year they canceled the event after 25 plus year run... A few Laser Sailors and 505 sailors decided to save the event and move it to ACSC. Some how I ended up being the regatta chair. This year we are kept the event small only inviting the 505's and ILCA's. Next year we will add more fleets if there is interest. This is time of year can be tricky with the weather and it was looking like we might get blown out with a big storm. Fortunately the weather held out for the first day where we were pleasantly surprised to get a warm 65 degree sunny day with 5-10 knots of breeze. Unfortunately the wind ended up dying in the second race. On day two we were treated to a cold 50 degree day with breeze ranging from 12-34knots out of the south. Launching and retrieving our boats was super challenging in these conditions. The fleet worked together to get everyone on and off the water safely. The amazing race committee managed to get in three races in the constantly changing conditions. Overall it was a great event and I look forward to next years event!

In this episode I finish building a brand new mast for our boat. This mast is a Selden Alto section built to the Rogue Rigging Spec. This spec was put together by myself, Howard Hamlin (505 Sailing Legend) and Mike Martin (Also a 505 Sailing Legend). As this mast is identical to our other mast we are trying a few new things. Couple of the big changes are getting rid of the 2:1 main halyard and going with a halyard lock. As well we are using a different spin halyard cleat setup. ***Just so you know! I build, rig and sell masts for dinghies and sailboats up to 40'. So hit me up if you need a new mast or rigging for your boat.

Just a quick promo for the Alameda Community Sailing Center's Spring Dinghy Regatta. Its happening March 15th and 16th! Its open to ILCA 6's, ILCA 7's and 505's. This is the first year that we are hosting the event. Next year we will open the event up to more fleets if there is interest. Sign up here: https://theclubspot.com/regatta/VK7BP0kWfK

The worlds start in July of 2026 so we have just a year and a half to go. Follow Mike and I on our journey to get to the world championships, from boat upgrades, practice days, regattas, debriefs and some shenanigans along the way. In the first episode I knock out a bunch of new upgrades to our boat. WARNING there is a bunch of splicing montages. After 2 years of sailing the boat we have found what we like and dislike about the boat doing everything to optimize it so that we can sail it to the full potential. As well we loaned the boat out to one of the top teams in the world and they gave a bunch of good feed back and ways to make it faster. Larry Tuttle from Waterat (The guy who built the boat) did some composite work to our foils and the forward bulkhead and gave us a bunch of rigging upgrade suggestions.
In this episode of the Rogue Rigger I do some more upgrades to a J/99. I remove the Harken furler and Install a Cyclops Marine Load Cell Smart Sense Turnbuckle Body, a new headstay and a Harken Carbo Foil.

The learning curve is steep with this boat for sure. Stoked that was able to foil for thew first time. Session was cut short due to forgetting to put the drain plug in after it was to late, the boat was feeling sluggish and so was I. Cant wait to get out there again! Enjoy!

After my first sail I discovered that I needed a better way to launch my moth. After building the Molly I wanted to go sailing again and finally get some foiling in. Unfortunately Mother Nature has decided its not Moth sailing season yet. Its been pouring rain for the past couple weeks and not ideal conditions for learning to foil. Not to worry, I sail on San Francisco Bay and summer is coming, so plenty of windy foiling days to come! I did want to show some sailing in this video, so here are few highlights from racing on the Farr 400 last weekend in the pouring rain. As well I through in some footage from our 505 tuning session a couple weekends ago. Enjoy!

I show you how I work with carbon fiber. From carbon cloth, to laminating to finish products. I. build the new bow sprit nose cone and socket, new cleat platforms and headstay attachment. ***Just a heads up Im not composite expert by any means, over the years I have completed a bunch of composite projects on my various boats. These are a few of the techniques that I have learned along the way.
