The last ever job we did on the hardstand that we couldn't complete. Today we are revisiting the tiller arm setup and taking them to a trusted engineer shop to do a critical modification. It'll either improve their performance immensely or destroy them completely. We run through the work with Watson Marine Engineering, cutting a keyway into the internal bore of the tiller arms. That SHOULD be enough work for one episode...but we don’t have any time to waste because we are trying to get out of the marina ASAP, so it’s on to the next job! Commissioning our diesel tanks: we had some pickup plates fabricated so it's time to mount them too! Building internal systems from scratch?! It's not an easy feat. We're pushing to get out of the Marina and live on anchor as soon as we can manage, but we also happen to be LIVING on the site that we're working. This means we'll need power, fresh running water, a functioning toilet and waste management systems before we motor out of here. Not only do we have to consider what will be the fastest way, but also how these systems will work for our permanent set up so that we're not backtracking and re-running cables and lines. It's a lot to consider, but we don't have the time to sit around and consider it. It's time to get to work! ____________________________________________________________________________ For ad-free and early release episodes, behind the scenes content and live updates, check out our Patreon! 2 months until we’re kicking off and out of the marina - 2 months to get this boat semi-liveable and off-grid. Power, water, head. But first, we have to plan where all of these systems will fit!? It’s a big boat that needs a big system, but navigating the weight displacement for a catamaran is an entirely new concept for us. This week we’re building the mounts for our off-grid house system, finishing the mounting of the handrails…and laughing as we have another man overboard (it’s the same man, just again). _____________________________________________________________________________ Copyrighted music licensed from Lickd. https://lickd.co My Favorite Things by Julie Andrews, https://t.lickd.co/l/p7NgGJpkNd0 Copyrighted music licensed from Lickd. https://lickd.co The Sound Of Music by Charmian Carr, Heather Menzies, Nicholas Hammond, Duane Chase, Angela Cartwright, Debbie Turner, Kym Karath, Bill Lee, https://t.lickd.co/l/n7VYgAAdWjA PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/TheNewKidsOnTheDock PAYPAL: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=KNLJDGDXPAYAU WISHLIST: https://www.myregistry.com/wishlist/josh-and-phoebe-coomera-queensland/5046646 _____________________________________________________________________________ We would like to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land and seas which we work, play and live on: the Kombumerri peoples. Try Headspace for 60 days completely FREE with our link: https://headspace-web.app.link/e/NKD ~ Limited time offer! ~ Now the 57ft abandoned catamaran is finally floating…pressure’s off, right? Not quite. This boat project is only just getting started 😅 This week, Phoebe and I are mounting stern rails, sealing and mounting engine room hatches. We're pushing hard to get this Cat out of the marina and onto anchor within the next 2 months...marina fees add up fast. But to get out of here, the job list is HUGE. On top of that, we need to sell our home of five years ‘Innerbloom’ to pay off loans and keep this project moving forward. Then, we have our worst day in recent memory - a day so full of expensive mistakes we could've bought a whole extra month on the hardstand. It hits us that we can’t keep pushing ourselves, we're run down from 3 solid months on this project. The truth is, you can’t run at full pelt forever. We need to take a couple of steps back to keep moving forward and that means better routines, looking after our health, and taking a proper day off to reconnect. Because making sure we’re both still standing together when it’s time to finally cast off and go cruising is what we're doing it all for! _____________________________________________________________________________ PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/TheNewKidsOnTheDock PAYPAL: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=KNLJDGDXPAYAU WISHLIST: https://www.myregistry.com/wishlist/josh-and-phoebe-coomera-queensland/5046646 _____________________________________________________________________________

Our steel Adams35 sloop rig yacht needs some TLC after 82 days of neglect while we worked on our abandoned 57ft Dereck Kelsall Catamaran. We’re spreading our work between two boats, one steel - one glass. We can’t spend too long on our mono though, because we’ve got a delaminated cockpit and a desperate need to get out of the marina $$$. The work seems endless, but hooking in together makes every moment enjoyable. Join us for a fun session on the tools as we continue to work towards our goal of paying off our loans, selling our beloved Innerbloom so we can then afford to continue the build on the Catamaran of our dreams! Launch is at 8:30, it’s 7:30 and we still can’t steer our rudders. Our 57ft abounded Catamaran has taken 82 days of non-stop work and today it finally pays off. The timeline we’ve set for ourselves is nothing short of ridiculous - there isn’t much like youthful optimism is there? But we aren’t going to give up now..one final push with the help of our friends and professionals at Ocean Degree! This is the culmination of the greatest challenge of our lives, bringing an abandoned 57ft Kelsall catamaran back to life in just 82 days with an abysmal budget and ridiculously under qualified self-belief...we have no experience with foam sandwich fibreglass construction, nor multihull boat designs, but somehow we’ve overcome every challenge to get to this day. We’ve slept about 8 hours in last 5 days to be ready for the launch and we’ve given this everything - mentally, physically and financially. But do you want to know what the craziest part is? It’s still just the beginning. We still have so much left to do on the boat, but getting off the hardstand and into the water means we’re safe from hardstand fees and can focus our attentions on the next phase. One day we’ll explore the world on this boat, but today? Today we float, we cry and we celebrate the end of our boatyard era! _____________________________________________________________________________ PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/TheNewKidsOnTheDock PAYPAL: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=KNLJDGDXPAYAU WISHLIST: https://www.myregistry.com/wishlist/josh-and-phoebe-coomera-queensland/5046646 _____________________________________________________________________________ We would like to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land and seas which we work, play and live on: the Kombumerri peoples. It’s pure adrenaline carrying us for the last day of this hardstand project! It’s been 82 days since we bought this 57ft Kelsall Catamaran at auction - abandoned, derelict and full of potential! We’ve completed a mountain of work, learning new skills and nurtured new friendships. This week we have some much needed backup with the support of friends as we push to finish our wet exhaust systems and test run the motors with them, sort out our props, get our anchor and chain on the boat plus install the final thru hulls and valves! It’s a tight deadline and we are flogged from a week of late nights and big days but we are closer than we have ever been to success and the safety of launching the boat and not going broke on hardstand fees. Let’s do this together! Cheers, Josh!!! This abounded Catamaran project, working on a deadline set by limited funds, has been the hardest thing we have done with our lives. This weeks episode shows the raw and real challenges mentally and physically we have constantly faced. With less than two days to splash you’d think we would be wrapping up the works and finishing the little bits and pieces, right? We wish. It’s all systems go to finish the hydraulic steering system under the guidance of a professional, Nick from Marine Control Systems. We have some extra hands on the job as we go for the final fitment of our rudders…but it’s not good news. This episode - it’s all stacking against us as we work into the night. After buying a 57ft abandoned Kelsall catamaran at auction, we committed to a full DIY catamaran rebuild…learning as we go and racing a VERY thin deadline. Now we have less than five days left in the boatyard before this sailing catamaran goes back in the water. Rudders to fit. Antifoul to roll. Steering system to finalise. The final stretch of this abandoned boat restoration is here! We’ve got a working bee of new friends on the job, some good tunes to get us through and a sealift date we have to honour. Will we finish in time? Or are we about to find out the hard way? _____________________________________________________________________________ PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/TheNewKidsOnTheDock PAYPAL: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=KNLJDGDXPAYAU WISHLIST: https://www.myregistry.com/wishlist/josh-and-phoebe-coomera-queensland/5046646 _____________________________________________________________________________ We would like to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land and seas which we work, play and live on: the Kombumerri peoples. After 73 days in the boatyard…the rudder saga finally ends. We designed them. Second-guessed them. Stressed about foam compression. Ripped off Coosa board. Glassed them. Sanded until our arms stopped working. And then realised the boat wasn’t even high enough to fit them. Classic. In this episode we’re finally finishing our DIY catamaran rudders on our 57ft abandoned catamaran - testing our bearings, setting our 6mm hull gap, bogging, fairing and doing everything we can to make sure these blades are ready for launch in 7 days. This is the last major job standing between us and the water. We’ve lived on a steel Adams 35 for five years, steel fabrication we understand. Fibreglass rudders with coosa board and H115 foam cores ? That’s been a STEEP learning curve. Huge thanks to Riley, Callum, Dayne and the team at Ocean Degree at The Boat Works for helping us through the glassing phase - and to our mates who continue to lend tools, time and moral support as this deadline looms. Seven days. Very little energy left. But these rudders are going on - one way or another!! _____________________________________________________________________________ For ad-free and early release episodes, behind the scenes content and live updates, check out our Patreon! With just 12 days left before launch, we’re installing what might be the most important system on the entire boat - the wet exhaust! We paid $80K for this boat at auction and banked on our two Yanmar D2-75 motors to work. After some servicing and repairing, that gamble paid off. But the next step to keeping these brand-new-decade-old engines in prime condition is a wet exhaust system that's fail proof. There’s just one small problem…we’ve never done this before. In this episode, we’re cutting into the hull of our 57ft abandoned catamaran, learning fibreglass work on the fly, and hoping our measurements, bogging, glassing are good enough to trust once we’re back in the water. This system has to work because there’s no shortcut, no redo and very little time to correct the mistakes. This is what “figuring it out” actually looks like - thanks for being here and backing us through the messy middle 🤍 LET'S GO!!! The only reason we've been able to get this far is from the support we've received from strangers (now friends) and all of the positivity online...but mostly because we're in a loving relationship - doing this together. However, this project has proven to be one of the biggest challenges for our relationship, with Josh often chipping away alone, and Phoebe in the saloon above editing the videos. With 8 days remaining until splash day, we're (tiredly) ticking off some of the last remaining jobs on the engines...together! No one ever said this was going to be easy! A project of this size can take years and hundreds of thousands of dollars - and we’ve set the ambitious goal to do it in just two months. We’re in debt and have minimal cash to get floating, but what we lack in finance we make up for in passion. If this episode seems a bit chaotic, lacks structure with an extra dash of madness… but that’s because it is! Crikey this is a wild one, but are we glad to be in it together! We're kicking the end of the year off with the satisfying resolution to the ultimate question "What the heck was growing on our abandoned boat?!". This massive job took 2 whole days, and although this clean was purely for aesthetics...we feel like it's given us the boost of morale that we needed to power through the last 2 weeks of the build. It's coming to the pointy end of the boatyard arrow...and we're pointing it directly to all of the final jobs that have been hanging overhead. This week, Phoebe is away, so Josh rally's his mates to help him bog, fair and paint the hull, calculate the volumes of our onboard tanks, Brett returns to put the cherry on top of our port engines and we tick enough jobs off the list so we can justify the time to...wait for it...CLEAN THE HULL!!! INNERBLOOM NOW FOR SALE: https://yachthub.com/list/yachts-for-sale/used/sail-monohulls/adams-35-innerbloom/335935 5 years ago, Josh and I bought this steel, sloop rigged mono hull from Mooloolaba, QLD. The second time we'd set foot on a sailboat was the passage taking her home after purchase. 2 years living in a trawler harbour, then 3 years of cruising 6000nm up and down Australias East Coast...and now 2 melancholy but satisfied sailors. Our chapter with Innerbloom, our Joe Adams design 35ft mopno, is now coming to an end. We hope that we can find the right owner for her that will keep her doing what she's made for - SAILING and ADVENTURING! Every system aboard Innerbloom has been maintained, upgraded or replaced - she is a true turn-key cruiser ready to sail tomorrow. She's humble, but she's capable! Ultra-modern and powerful electrical system, luxe new carpets and upholstery, raw water washdown, bluetooth windlass system, outdoor bbq set up...the list could go on! Spearfishing, trolling, diving surfing - Innerbloom's made that happen for us. These 5 years have been the time of our lives and we can confidently say that we have experienced the transformation of a total Innerbloom 💜 We love this boat so much, and we hope to share this dream with the new owner one day soon... _____________________________________________________________________________ For ad-free and early release episodes, behind the scenes content and live updates, check out our Patreon!
