This is your weekly Global Sailing Highlights show, the World on Water for February 27 2026. The 2026 RORC Caribbean 600 got underway in spectacular style in Antigua from Fort Charlotte, high above the iconic Pillars of Hercules. At the start of the 17th edition, the international RORC fleet set out for the non-stop 600-mile race around 11 stunning Caribbean islands. The starting sequence was split into five starts with the Multihull and IRC Monohull entries at the end of the sequence. White caps on the Caribbean surf confirmed at least 15 knots of breeze, but tantalizing shifts and wind lanes produced very tactical decisions from the get-go. If the opening salvos are any indication, the 2026 RORC Caribbean 600 is set for a full-blooded duel in IRC Zero. The pre-start between Niklas Zennström’s Carkeek 52, Rán, and Frédéric Puzin’s Carkeek 54, Daguet 5, was nothing short of electric. Rán seized the early initiative, forcing Daguet 5 into evasive action to avoid being over the line. The pair split tacks seconds from the gun, but quickly converged again beneath the cliffs of Fort Charlotte, pressing all the way inshore in a high-stakes game. With Rán to leeward and Daguet 5 controlling from windward, the tack out was virtually simultaneous, a battle royale is clearly set to continue offshore. With virtually the entire big boat class committing to the pin end, the start was always going to be a high-stakes confrontation. Mills 72 Balthasar skippered by Louis Balcaen was marginally early and eased sheets a fraction close to the line. Balthasar was quickly overhauled by Remon Vos’ Maxi 100 Black Jack 100. To leeward and a fraction later than Black Jack, the Farr 100 Leopard 3, helmed by Joost Schuijff, hit the line at full pace and squeezed up to windward of Black Jack 100, momentarily back-wind-ing the 100-footer as both charged towards the cliffs of Antigua with little sea room to spare. The early duel continued offshore, with Black Jack 100 rounding the Barbuda mark first, holding a two-minute advantage over Leopard 3.

Thank you. 4 days into the 2026 RORC Transatlantic Race, the fleet has fully escaped the Canary Islands and locked into the rhythm of the trade winds. At the very front of the fleet, the Mod 70 trimarans are delivering a jaw-dropping masterclass in extreme ocean racing. Jason Carroll’s Argo, and Erik Maris’ Zoulou, are routinely charging through the high twenties and punching past 30 knots as the breeze builds. As of 1400 UTC on Wednesday 14 January, Argo holds an advantage of approximately 50 nautical miles over Zoulou, and is just over 1,000 miles from the finish in Antigua. At this pace, the Mod 70's are shaping up for a crossing time of under five days,. While Argo sits confidently in the driving seat, Zoulou remains very much in range, with only hours separating them if the conditions tighten.

Twenty-four hours after rounding Cape Horn for the very first time in his career, Benjamin Schwartz reflects on the challenging conditions encountered aboard Sodebo Ultim 3, since the start of their ascent of the South Atlantic. The last 24 hours have been particularly trying for the crew: unstable weather, very rough seas, and an intense pace on board. Difficult conditions, but ones that should gradually improve in the coming hours, with rising temperatures and calmer seas. Benjamin also discusses rounding the legendary Cape Horn, a powerful and "memorable" moment for the six crew members who were rounding it for the first time. An even more special moment for him, as he, along with five of his crewmates, has now become a Cape Horner. Day 29. Sodebo Ultim 3 is sailing on the edge of an anticyclone before beginning its ascent up its western flank to reach the trade winds... In the maneuvering area, the watch handover is taking place between Pierre Leboucher and Nicolas Troussel. CIC Idec Sport report corrupted during their live stream from boat. Our apologies. A vision realised in Lanzarote “From the very beginning in 2014 this race has been a labour of passion for my family, my team and our partners,” commented José Juan Calero, CEO of Calero Marinas. “Creating an offshore race across one of the world’s great oceans was a real challenge at the time. The early years were not easy, entries were limited, but with the unwavering loyalty and support of the Royal Ocean Racing Club, we believed in the vision and kept moving forward. “Today, the RORC Transatlantic Race is firmly established as one of the reference events on the global offshore calendar, and that makes us immensely proud. To witness the start here in Lanzarote was deeply emotional; from the first foiling superyacht ever to start this race, to the intense match racing between the MOD70s and the extraordinary diversity of crews and boats. Watching the fleet depart past Puerto Calero, where our family’s story began, felt like both a farewell and a celebration. This race represents ambition, perseverance and the true spirit of offshore sailing.”

The passage across the Indian Ocean is when Idec Sport enjoyed a near-perfect run, and Sodebo could do nothing as they watched their lead reduced to under 200 nautical miles at times as they gybed to find the best winds, knowing that Joyon and his team back in 2016/17 covered the entire ocean on one gybe at incredible speed. Sodebo has though held the lead and set a new record to Cape Leeuwin of 17 days, 1 hour, and 17 minutes, over 5 and a half hours quicker than Idec’s time.
