The Volvo Ocean 60 (VO60) is a legendary class of offshore racing sailboat that played a crucial role in the evolution of the world's most prestigious around-the-world yacht race - originally known as the Whitbread Round the World Race, later rebranded as the Volvo Ocean Race, and now known as The Ocean Race. In this episode, we sail aboard Wolfhound, a 1997 Volvo Ocean 60 based in The Port of Long Beach, Wilmington, California. Designed by Bruce Farr, Wolfhound was originally "Merit Cup", built by Martin Marine. She finished in 2nd place competing in the Whitbread 1997/1998 and skippered by Grant Dalton. In 19 knots of wind the vessel easily cruises at 14.3 knots and everyone aboard this social sail is having an extraordinary day. The Volvo Ocean 60 bridged the gap between the traditional heavy maxis and the more modern, faster VO70s. Many VO60s were sold post-race into private hands and are still racing or cruising. Capable of sustained speeds over 25 knots in the right conditions, the Volvo Ocean 60 was designed for extreme conditions in the Southern Ocean. All winches and sail controls are powered entirely by human effort and can withstand some of the most punishing legs in offshore racing. The Volvo Ocean 60 hull material is composite, made of carbon fiber and kevlar. The LOA is 64 feet and has a beam of 17' 2". The draft is 12'3" and has a carbon fiber mast that is 90 feet tall with 4 spreaders and a sail area of 1,937 sq ft upwind and 3,550 sq ft downwind. Let's go FAST! In this action-packed episode of Sailing with Scott, we join the crew of Tomol, a 2013 Catalina 385, for a thrilling race in stormy conditions off Dana Point, California. With a reefed main and brisk winds, the crew-led by Sue at the helm-competes in the Pharkle race, a local Thursday tradition. Santa Ana Winds were blowing strong on January 7, 2025. Devastation hit Los Angeles California as wildfires swept across the region. We were out on the water in Long Beach Harbor aboard Raptor II, a 2024 J112E, owned and skippered by Heinz Butner. The race today was a 6.1 nautical mile competition in the Salty Sailors Pursuit Race. The Santa Ana Winds were predicted to blow 40-60 MPH across Southern California. Contrary to the prediction, the wind on the water was not as strong as predicted, so many boats decided not to race. The wind finally shifted to the north with gusts increasing to 20 knots by the end of the race. Raptor II passed Loose Change (J40 boat) with only minutes remaining in the race. The Long Beach 2025 Two Gates Pursuit Race is a three race sailboat series sponsored by the Long Beach Yacht Club. In this episode of Sailing with Scott, we're aboard a 2003 Farr 40 named Rode Rage, owned and skippered by Peter Cochran. The Two Gates Pursuit Race starts inside the Port of Long Beach, exiting Queens Gate and into the Pacific Ocean. It then continues up the Middle Breakwater to Angles Gate and enters the Port of Los Angeles. With spinnakers flying, boats head down the harbor and back out into the Pacific through Queens Gate, down towards the Alamitos Bay Inlet and then to the finish line. The races start and finish is in the vicinity of Mark 38 in Long Beach Harbor. Rode Rage finishes strong with a good crew, and enjoyed an extraordinary day of sailing off the shores of Southern California. To be eligible for the DPYC Non-Spinnaker Championship Regatta a skipper must have had a first place finish in a non-spinnaker race or regatta since the prior year's Harbor Championships, where the race starts and finishes in Dana Point Harbor and is sponsored by a Dana Point Harbor Yacht Club. The 27th Annual Dana West Yacht Club Charity Regatta, off the coast of Dana Point in Southern California had 21 boats competing. Sometimes boats try to occupy the same space on the water and that's when collisions occur.
