We had to change our mooring lines here in Ponta Delgada. The 'proper' ones that we usually use just made sooo much noise! After talking to a local, we were directed to the following shop: Honorato Moreira & Monteiro, Lda., Estr. Regional da Ribeira Grande 68A, 9500-296 Ponta Delgada Phone: 296 385 047 Walking from the direction of the marina, the shop is just past the prison on the same side of the road. We bought several lengths of 18mm line. The rope is actually sold by weight (?) but you ask for the length you want. They measure the rope and then weigh it. It worked out around 1 euro per metre. They only spoke Portuguese, so google translate is your friend here. They were really helpful and have a wide range of boating/fishing accessories. The polypropylene(?) mooring lines are so much quieter, and have good elasticity. The boat is much more pleasant to live on 😁 We also have mooring compensators. Bit of a storm here today. We weren't expecting to try out our new LOMO foul weather gear in the marina. Winds expected to reach gusts of 43knots by 1600. We have added many extra shorelines to keep Nova Vita safe. There is considerable swell in the port and marina. The stormy weather is expected to last until around midnight and the all will be calm again. We planned an early morning departure for the 150-nautical-mile sail to Ponta Delgada. But unfortunately, our anchor was fouled, so we had to call a diver to free it. To make things worse, the motor on our anchor windlass stopped working. We checked the solenoid, wiring, and all connections, which meant it could only be the motor. The divers from https://www.norbertodiver.pt/ arrived around 5:30 p.m. and quickly freed our anchor for €80. They were friendly and efficient - great service if you are unfortunate enough to get stuck. After manually getting the anchor on board, we were finally able to set off. It turned out to be a brilliant overnight sail with amazing conditions. We arrived in Ponta Delgada after dark, but since it's an easy port to enter and we've been here twice before, it wasn't an issue. We finish sailing across the Atlantic after 28 days at sea and arrive at Horta on the island of Faial, Azores. We had to sail very conservatively to protect the rigging so the journey ended up taking much longer than we had hoped. Getting into port with the rig still up was our priority, so we took the win 😁 We are very pleased to have made the crossing back to the Azores from the Caribbean. Nova Vita performed brilliantly the whole way. The rigging was repaired whilst we were here. We ordered 2 new inners which came from the mainland and which we fitted ourselves (a simple task). Horta is a great place to spend some time and it was good to relax here after the crossing.

Here we are again, in the middle of the ocean, trying to fix stuff! The inner shroud began to fail, the wind instrument packed up, and the engine decided to increase the amount of oil it was leaking. This is a normal part of sailing. When you sail offshore, you expect gear to fail. Whilst it can really lower the morale of the boat, it also provides you with an opportunity to learn. You learn about yourself and what you are capable of doing in a new situation. Is there a way to overcome this problem? How do you get the crew and boat safely to port? What can you use to improvise a repair? "When you are going through hell, keep going" - Winston Churchill - is one of our guiding philosophies on board. We always persevere until we have resolved any problems. We know that eventually the hard times will pass. Our grand plan was a west-to-east crossing of the Atlantic, and we set sail with high hopes. Initially, everything was smooth sailing, but sometimes, sailing, like life, doesn't go according to plan. Our journey took an unexpected turn when we were battered by relentless rain and squalls. To make matters worse, our windvane broke—for the second time! With 2,200 nautical miles to the Azores and only 70 to return to St. Martin, the choice was clear. It's always better to face a delay than to tackle a major problem at sea. So, very disappointed, we turned back, getting drenched by a huge downpour on our return to St. Martin. We repaired the windvane, bought some new foul-weather gear, and found a better weather window. We leave the island of Antigua behind for an overnight sail to St Martin / Sint Maarten. The trip was only around 100 NM but was much slower than we thought as the forecast wind was much lighter. We made it to the anchorage at Baie de Marigot, St Martin where we stayed for a few days. There is plenty of room to anchor. It can be rolly at times. What a fantastic day for sailing! An amazing day sail from Guadeloupe to Antigua. Leaving the pretty town of Deshaies behind we set off for the 48 mile sail to Antigua. We enjoyed good wind all the way and the windvane did a perfect job. We dropped anchor in Lignum Vitae Bay, just outside Jolly Harbour. We set off hoping for wind but had to motor the ENTIRE way to Guadeloupe. Arriving at Marina Bas du Fort we moored up stern-to, something we do very rarely. Luckily it went well and we did not damage the wind vane, which would have been a disaster. Hello everyone. We're here in the UK for a while visiting friends and family and doing the "Schengen shuffle". Nova Vita is still in the Azores where we will rejoin her in October and carry on with the adventure.

We visit Fort Napoleon, Iles des Saintes. A great day out seeing the flora and fauna of these beautiful islands and visiting this historic landmark with its exotic gardens. The views are incredible from the Fort and the exhibitions are very interesting. After one fairly sleepless night in Roseau, Dominica we head to Iles des Saintes, Guadeloupe. We had to motor almost halfway before we found great wind. Iles des Saintes is incredibly beautiful and very busy as a result. We loved it and would definitely like to come back. We met up with some friends whose family had been kind enough to bring our GoPro out with them. Sailing from St Pierre, Martinique to Roseau, Dominica on a beautiful sunny day. The first test of our new windvane from South Atlantic Self Steering. We bought the new one to replace the one we used across the Atlantic and which was 'tired' to say the least. We had a great sail across and picked up a mooring buoy in Roseau from 'Marcus' which was ECD50 for the night. We took the dinghy ashore and walked to the cruise ship terminal to check in. Very easy and ECD15.
