Our 10-hour sail took us through the famous acceleration zone before we arrived at one of the most rugged and unique landscapes we've ever experienced. From towering volcanic cliffs and relentless winds to crystal-clear water and a peaceful natural lagoon, El Hierro immediately captured our attention. The boys wasted no time making the most of it, trying out GoPro experiments, cliff jumps, and taking in the island's dramatic scenery. A chance encounter with a sea turtle in the harbour and posters showcasing El Hierro's incredible marine life left us eager to explore what lay beneath the surface. Little did we know, our underwater adventures here would become some of the highlights of our time in the Canary Islands. ▶️ **In the next episode:** We get our first taste of authentic El Hierro life and finally dive into the island's spectacular underwater world with fellow sailors. But our free-diving adventure doesn't quite go to plan when we accidentally end up in trouble with the local authorities… Thanks for watching, and if you enjoyed the adventure, don't forget to like, subscribe, and come sailing with us on the next episode! ⛵ Sailing ELANE
▶️ Watch the full Canary Island Adventure Series here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQknaPbK41cPDOHgvgCtzanrQ4zxZYr7q For the past couple of weeks, we've been anchored off the spectacular coastline of La Gomera, exploring hidden coves, snorkeling crystal-clear waters, and discovering a whole new underwater world. Free-diving has quickly become part of everyday life aboard SV ELANE, and every dive reveals something unexpected. In this episode, we encounter fascinating marine life, swim alongside schools of curious fish, and even enjoy some knee-boarding behind the dinghy. But just as we're ready to leave our secluded anchorage, we discover our anchor has become hopelessly stuck on the seabed. With departure depending on it, Aksel takes on his biggest free-diving challenge yet. How deep will he have to dive to free the anchor and get us underway again? After provisioning in Santiago, we motor to one last quiet anchorage for a final day of underwater adventures before setting sail for El Hierro—the Canary Islands' wildest and most southwesterly island. As the sun sets, the boys help Eivind winch the dinghy aboard in preparation for the 10-hour offshore passage ahead. Throughout this sailing journey, learning by doing has been one of our greatest adventures, and every destination teaches us something new. If you enjoy family sailing, free-diving, snorkeling, and exploring remote anchorages, we think you'll enjoy this episode! 👍 If you enjoyed the adventure, please give the video a LIKE! 💬 Question of the day: Would you let your children grow up sailing around the world? ▶️ Watch the full Canary Island Adventure Series here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQknaPbK41cPDOHgvgCtzanrQ4zxZYr7q What was supposed to be a short 5-nautical-mile motor sail along the spectacular coast of La Gomera turns into one of our most memorable stops in the Canary Islands. In this episode, we sail from San Sebastián to Santiago, La Gomera, where the boys enjoy hitching a ride behind the boat on a paddle board while we make the easy passage south. With easier access to groceries, Santiago seemed like the perfect practical stop—but it quickly became much more than that. After arriving, we witness something we've never seen before: local teenagers luring a wild stingray to leap up the harbor wall for fish! Later, we spot what appears to be the very same stingray cruising through the harbor. While Nikolai recovers from a painful case of swimmer's ear, we continue enjoying life aboard with hiking, paddle boarding, homeschooling, and meaningful conversations about whether raising our boys on a sailboat is really the right choice. During an early-morning paddle-board adventure with our German buddy-boat friends from Enfant Terrible, we reflect on parenting, worldschooling, friendships, and the unique lifestyle we've chosen. Just when we think Santiago has shown us everything it has to offer, local fishermen haul in an enormous 200-kilo (440 lb) giant fish right before our eyes—the perfect ending to an unforgettable stop in La Gomera. If you love family sailing, liveaboard life, worldschooling, marine wildlife, and exploring the Canary Islands, you're in the right place. ⚓ In this episode you'll see: • Sailing from San Sebastián to Santiago, La Gomera • Paddle boarding behind the sailboat • A jumping wild stingray in the harbor • Beautiful coastal walks and volcanic scenery • Liveaboard family life & homeschooling reflections • Early morning paddle boarding with sailing friends • Local fishermen landing a massive 200kg giant fish • Incredible marine life in the Canary Islands 👍 If you enjoyed the adventure, please LIKE the video! 💬 We'd love to hear from you: Would you let your kids grow up sailing around the world? 🔔 Subscribe and join us as we continue sailing the Canary Islands and beyond! From the beach and its unique rock viewpoint towers, we wander through cozy streets and up into the hillside neighborhoods. Along the way, we discover the beautiful Parador Hotel, perched above the harbor with lush gardens and classic Canarian architecture—white-washed walls, dark wooden balconies, and peaceful courtyards. As we climb higher, the town reveals its charm—colorful houses, weathered stone walls, and ever-expanding ocean views. Eventually, we reach a scenic lighthouse viewpoint overlooking the Atlantic. And for the first time, Eivind joins some new friends for a spearfishing adventure… will he bring home dinner, or just a good story? 👉 In the next episode: We hike to stunning viewpoints above the southern side of the bay, where a surprising anchorage spot catches our eye and inspires us to head back out on anchor. Description: ▶️ Watch the full Canary Sailing Series here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQknaPbK41cM7eXaTs7h8emvAc6NwMg34 In this episode, we set sail southbound from Santa Cruz to Los Cristianos — a passage that begins as routine but quickly turns unforgettable. Our route takes us through one of Tenerife’s notorious acceleration zones, where winds funnel around the island’s steep topography, particularly Mt. Teide, and can intensify without warning. Sure enough, we’re soon pushing through 20–30 knots, surrounded by hundreds of playful dolphins. But the real heart-stopper? Unexpected visitors… With fresh memories of reports about orca interactions with sailboats circulating since 2020, tensions run high when we spot three orcas near Tenerife — a statistically rare, once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounter. In the moment, though, logic takes a back seat to adrenaline. We follow recommended best practices: slow down, drop sails, stay calm (or at least try to!), keep movements minimal, and suit up in lifejackets while letting the whales do their thing. What unfolds is a passage that is equal parts exhilarating, humbling, and briefly terrifying — classic Sailing ELANE style. ⏱️ Timestamps 0:00 🚢 Departing Santa Cruz, Tenerife 0:08 🌬️ Preparing for Tenerife’s Notorious Acceleration Zone 0:34 🎶 Sailing Life Montage — “You and I Can Weather Any Storm” 1:17 📺 Episode Intro — Family Sailing Adventure Begins 1:34 🧭 Route Plan: Santa Cruz to Los Cristianos 2:27 🌥️ Weather, Wind Forecast & Downwind Strategy 2:51 ⛵ Storm Sail Ready — Safety Preparations 3:48 🌊 Downwind Cruising at 5–9 Knots 5:23 ⛰️ Mount Teide Clouds Over Tenerife 5:34 🪢 Genoa Sail Setup & Rolling Ocean Swell 8:56 🐬 First Dolphin Encounter — Pure Magic 10:01 🤩 Surrounded by Playful Dolphins 11:47 🐋 ORCAS SPOTTED — Tension Rises 12:21 🚨 Family Prepares — Life Jackets On 13:55 😰 Close Orca Encounter — Nerve-Wracking Moments 14:27 📊 Orca Boat Interactions Explained (2020–2021) 15:52 👀 Are They Coming Back? 16:28 🌊 Dramatic Waves in the Acceleration Zone 17:06 🐬 Dolphins Surfing the Waves 18:12 ⚡ Eventful Passage Continues 19:26 🐦 Massive Bird Feeding Frenzy 20:50 🌊 Splash Over the Deck 22:22 📻 Distress Call Heard on the Radio 23:26 ✅ Clear of the Acceleration Zone 24:36 😊 Relief — Orcas Have Moved On 25:09 🏝️ Arrival at Los Cristianos Harbor 25:43 🌅 Sunset Anchorage with Stunning Cliffs 26:28 🏖️ Exploring the Tourist Area --- CREDITS: Movavi Video Editor 26 Epidemic Sound: Phoenix Rising - Edgar Hopp Weather Any Storm (Instrumental) - Cody Francis Beach Goer - Frook Golden City - Jo Wandrini Rowing, Boat Squeaks, Water Splashes Greig_Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Op. 46_No. 3, Anitra's Dance - Odyssey Orchestra Ocean, Respirator Bubbles, Underwater Breathing, Diving, Argentina Narrow Escape - Dream Cave Dark Turns to Light - Hampus Naeselius Staying Here - Kikoru Other Media: r/ThatsInsane - SurayaThrowaway12 --- #SailingElane #SailingAdventure #OrcaEncounter #SailingLife #FamilySailing #LiveaboardLife #SailingTenerife #AtlanticCrossingPrep #SailingWithKids #BoatLife #OceanAdventure #DownwindSailing #WildlifeAtSea #DolphinEncounter #Orcas #TenerifeSailing #LosCristianos #SailingVlog #CruisingLife #SailboatLife #WomenWhoSail #SailingFamily #OceanLife #SailingYouTube #AdventureAtSea

Sailing Canary Islands ⛵ Fuerteventura - Las Palmas, Gran Canaria| Sahara Dust to City Colors | ep51
From desert dust to city color—our family sails through a Calima to vibrant Las Palmas! ⛵️In this episode, we de-cockroach the boat (well, at least preventatively 😅) and dust off a fine layer of Sahara sand after getting caught in our very first Calima — the wild desert wind that sweeps orange dust all the way from Africa across the Canary Islands. Everything turned golden... including our boat, ELANE! After the cleanup, we sail 60 nautical miles (13 hours) from Morro Jable, Fuerteventura to Las Palmas, Gran Canaria — the lively capital known for its beaches, colorful streets, and as the legendary starting point of the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers). Once anchored just outside the busy marina, we explore vibrant street art, watch surfers take on Atlantic waves, and soak in the city vibe. But when it’s time to leave… our anchor refuses to budge! 😬 … and end up missing our perfect weather window to Tenerife. Oh well… just another day in sailing life! 🎥 Filmed: February 17–22, 2021 🧭 Route: Morro Jable ➜ Las Palmas (60nm / 13h) ☀️ Boat: SY ELANE 📍 Next Episode: Paddle-boarding, anchor rescue, and a road trip up to the icy peak of Roque Nublo! #sailingfamily #sailinglife #canaryislands #laspalmas #granCanaria #calima #ARC #kids4sail #itiwit #decathlon #sailingadventure 🕒 Timestamps & Highlights 0:47–1:06 ⛵️ Preparing canned food for storage — removing paper and cardboard to avoid roaches. 1:14–2:23 👨👩👦 Family teamwork — labeling cans, joking about “surprise food,” and playing with toy teeth. 3:00–3:57 🌴 Morning walk to the beach; kids finish homework and get some light exercise. 4:26–5:45 🌪️ Saharan sandstorm (Calima) hits — everything turns orange and dusty. 6:10–6:59 🌍 Narration explains the Calima phenomenon — sand blown from the Sahara across the Canary Islands. 7:20–8:09 ⚓️ Night sail to Las Palmas, arriving early morning among large ships. 8:41–9:48 🛥️ Anchoring outside Las Palmas harbor — meeting friends, 13-hour sail completed. 10:00–12:20 🌆 Exploring Las Palmas — giant yachts, murals, and discovering the city’s size and vibrancy. 13:06–14:46 🍦 Family walk to find ice cream; busy city vibes and street scenes. 16:34–17:55 ☀️ Breakfast in the cockpit; trying out a hammock over the water. 18:23–20:25 🚶♀️ Sunday walk along the promenade — relaxing family moments and playtime. 20:25–20:56 🍰 Celebrating the first day of Lent — baking traditional Norwegian cream rolls (“fastelavnsboller”). 21:04–21:31 ⚓️🚨 Anchor gets stuck; they can’t move the boat but eventually free it. 21:51–22:21 🏔️ Preview of next episode — mountain road trip and icy summit adventure.
