Even though we're not on Baby Blue, we managed to see a lot of boats over the last month. We thought we'd share our experiences camping out and working for three weeks at the Annapolis boat show. While we were out, we stopped by our boat to see how she's holding up and make sure she's ready for winter. Yep, in the dramatic finale of Sailing Baby Blue our boat gets struck by lightning. It was a really hard choice between Thunderstruck and Lightning Crashes for the title of this episode; both good songs, and there are so few moments when you can apply them to your life in such a literal way. Baby Blue is going to need a little R&R and we need a new place to live, so in this episode we'll reveal our plans for future travel. Thanks to all of our viewers and subscribers! We've had such a great time making these videos and hope you'll all come along on our next adventure. DER! - so I guess there is an obvious favorite here.
We're on our way back to Florida, coming in about 140 miles shy of our intended port. After a quick stop to reacquaint ourselves with a few US conveniences in Daytona Beach, we start our trek north on the ICW. While doing yoga on the boat was not always appealing, the islands offered ample opportunity to practice in the most inspiring settings. So, here's a little yoga compilation featuring some of the beautiful backdrops from our Caribbean sailing adventure. We traveled to 48 islands in 12 (loosely defined) countries, all thanks to our trusty, Baby Blue. We find out what the pigs on Big Majors want even more than to get in our dinghy and eat our meager kitchen scraps. We stroll the peaceful beaches of the Exuma Land and Sea Park, then cross the Northeast Providence Channel to the Abacos. After saying a quick hello and goodbye to charming Hope Town, we get ready to cross the Gulf Stream. Can't we just stay at the beach forever? We hit one more isolated out island before arriving in Georgetown to reprovision, surf, and hand feed some stingrays. Then we enjoy some of the most pleasant sailing of our trip on the Bahama banks as we leisurely make our way to Staniel Cay, stopping first to check out the sunken piano at Musha Cay. We pick the perfect time to visit Thunderball Grotto and it is absolutely spectacular! There is so much beauty to take in sailing the Bahamas, so we're spreading the views into three episodes. The pigs and our quick trip through the Abacos is coming up next! From the Dominican Republic we sail to Great Inagua in the Bahamas, home to a flock 60,000 flamingos. We take a tour of the island and then depart on another overnight sail to Crooked and Acklins Islands where we feel a little bit like the Swiss Family Robinson. One week of strolling along miles of empty beaches, rummaging around the abandoned settlements, and swimming everyday in pristine water was everything we had missed about the Bahamas. A slow and uneventful Mona Passage brings us back to the Dominican Republic. We head over to Los Haitises National Park where we explore mangroves and caverns, then run out of fuel again. We get to see a bunch of humpback whales in Samana Bay, and one comes up close to put on a show for us. We visit the first European settlement of the New World, and Jon proves his abilities by docking under sail in style. In this episode we leave Vieques and the Spanish Virgin Islands and head for mainland Puerto Rico. Suspicions that we might not have enough fuel to keep motoring are confirmed when we run out - right in front of our anchorage in Salinas. After three days of slow downwind sailing we arrive in Boqueron and make a beeline for Rincon. We're back on one of our favorite islands, Culebra, one of the Spanish Virgin Islands just 17 miles east of Puerto Rico. In this episode you'll find out why we waited so long to show you any footage of our surfing skills, and what people really mean when they say they're going out for a quick day sail. As always there is a wildlife montage - this time featuring hermit crabs, commensalism, and the majestic termite. As we skim across St. Martin and the Virgin Islands, I decide it's time for a real surfing lesson, a lot of wildlife show off, and Jon submits to acting out a dated popculture reference at one of the most dangerous airports in the world (it was his idea afterall). Then we're back to row, row, rowing our boat once again. We sail past Montserrat and St. Eustatia in order to get a chance to see Saba, our first Dutch Island. The picturesque villages perched on top of the cliffs were worth the wait and the trek up 800 steps of the stone ladder. The winter winds kept us in Guadeloupe for 3 weeks of land adventures: searching for windmills in Marie Galante, getting some exercise in The Saintes, and finally heading over to the main island to surf. The French Islands in the Caribbean are amazing, but we'll show you what happens when you get stuck in one place for too long. Hiking and more hiking. We're back on one of our favorite islands, Dominica, determined to cover as much ground as possible. People always ask us which island is our favorite. Of course it's hard to choose, but Dominica definitely wins the prize for best hiking in the Caribbean. We're often asked how we like our Monitor Windvane or sometimes just, "What is that thing on the stern of you boat?" We wanted to give you a quick overview of how it works and in what conditions, and share our thoughts on how it has served us over the last 4,000+ nautical miles. After five years of saving and scheming, we quit our jobs and sold our house in Denver, CO. This is the story of our journey down the US Atlantic Coast (offshore and ICW), through the Eastern Caribbean islands and back again from July 2014 - July 2016. We bought our boat, Baby Blue, an Allied Luders 33' sloop, moved aboard and learned to sail it over a summer in Maine. We didn't set out to make a vlog of the journey, so the first few videos are a compilation of what footage and photos we had on hand. It's a bit of of a rocky start (as was learning the ropes on our first offshore sailboat)! Our goal was to live simply and frugally so that we could stretch the funds in our cruising kitty to keep us afloat for as long as we could. We've since returned to shore to build a tiny house, buy land, and have a baby! You can watch the tiny house build on our channel, Tiny House Travels. We're now raising our young son in Western North Carolina while scheming about our next big adventure as a family. We cover ourselves in mud, spear a few lion fish, and eat too many pastries once again as we explore the anchorages from the Pitons in St. Lucia to St. Pierre, Martinique. We're back to the real cruising life as we slowly make our way north; starting with the pristine beaches of the Tobago Cays, a neverending squall outside Canouan blasts Baby Blue with 38 knot winds, and we arrive back at our beloved Bequia. We take a break from the tropics to return to the US, then get back to Grenada in time to celebrate Halloween cruiser-style, and get the boat ready to sail. We arrive in Grenada and immediately get to work avoiding all of our pending boat projects, concentrating on socializing instead. We celebrate Carnival - Grenada style, and face one of our biggest challenges so far: waking up to start drinking at 4am.
