I 'm back in full writing mode, working on my next major video-where I'll be revealing news about the future : - For me - For my boat, - For this channel In the meantime, life in Buren Bay continues: - I'm relying on a tender again, and after briefly losing the oar holder (making the half-kilometer row a bit of a circus act), I'm safely back onboard and in full swing. - Mitsu and I also had the pleasure of meeting a Canadian couple, Egbert and Heather on board Roundabout II, a Moody 40, anchoring nearby. They lived in Japan 30 years ago and are now back cruising. Their insights on provisioning and shopping in Japan are golden, especially for sailors just arriving. Stick around. This is Leg 2 of my Journey Beyond the Blue Zone. I visit Ama Island in Shimane Prefecture - a Longevity Hotspot with Japan's highest number of centenarians - and reunite with my friends Tyler and Julia. One year ago, Tyler and Julia sailed their Ingrid 38, Ramona Rae, from California to Hawaii and then across the Pacific to Japan. They have now lived aboard in Japan for over a year - and have never dropped anchor. In Japan, mooring is done differently, and their experience offers important lessons for cruisers thinking about crossing the Pacific. In this video: We visit Ramona Rae. They share why anchoring is rare in Japan and offer tips for incoming sailors. I complete my goal of visiting all 47 prefectures. We meet Mr. Shige, an 80-year-old barber aiming to cut hair until 100. We join a traditional island tug-of-war festival. If you're a cruiser, sailor, or interested in longevity and life in Japan, you'll find practical tips and inspiration here. Subscribe for more sailing, travel, and adventure content! This video highlights Leg One, a journey that will take me the length of Japan. Ian and I finally arrived at Uken Inlet and Buren Bay. My friend Brian flew in from California to join us for the next leg, only to have his plans take an unexpected turn. It was profoundly emotional when Mitsu came out in his boat to greet us. It was equally wonderful to reconnect with Mayor and meet Adventure Man Matt Pride once again and Martin and Chiharu on the patch of paradise. Join me on this leg of the journey filled with adventure, surprises, and heartfelt moments and lots of other friends to After sailing into over 80 ports and visiting all 47 prefectures of Japan, people often ask me, "What's your favorite place?" Until now, my honest answer has always been: It depends. Usually, it's the people who make a place special. But sailing back into the stunning Amami Islands-specifically the peaceful Uken Inlet-I finally have a clear answer. Amami has everything a sailor dreams of: ? Untouched beaches ? Natural typhoon holes ? Abundant nature ? Deep-rooted culture and rich history ? And lifelong friends This video marks the end of Leg One of my new adventure-A Journey Beyond the Blue Zone-as I leave SV Wahine moored on a buoy (a prized mooring for sailors) and continue north by land. My next destination is Shimane, the final prefecture I've yet to visit, and also home to the highest number of centenarians per capita in Japan-the true Blue Zone in Japan Join me as I close one chapter and begin another-exploring what it means to live long, independently, and well. ? March 20th isn't just another day on the calendar-it holds deep personal meaning for me. It marks the Vernal Equinox, a symbol of balance, renewal, and fresh starts. On this day 25 years ago, I began a life-changing 3,000 km bicycle journey from Sakurajima in Kyushu to Hokkaido-a personal challenge that shaped who I am. And today, I celebrate a milestone-turning 70. Life's been full of ups and downs-some challenges chosen, others unexpected-but through it all, it's the pursuit of purpose and the support of loved ones that keep me moving. Some goals I've reached, others I've missed-but every step forward has been worth it. Here's to the next chapter. As long as I'm moving, I know I'm living. Thinking of mooring your boat in a Japanese fishing port or harbor? Japan is a welcoming but deeply group-oriented society, and showing respect is key to a smooth experience. In this video, I share two essential tips to help foreign cruisers integrate respectfully: 1?? The "Sumimasen Gift" ? - Japan is a gift-giving culture, and a small token of appreciation can go a long way. If you've inconvenienced someone or received local advice, offering a small gift (snacks, souvenirs, or a favorite beverage) helps build goodwill and relationships. 2?? Leave a Contact Sign on Your Boat ? - If you're off shopping or enjoying a night out, leave a visible sign with your contact details. In Japan's group culture, locals appreciate knowing how to reach you if needed. ? Why This Matters: Japan isn't where breaking or bending the rules as a "challenge" is admired. Respect is the foundation of Japanese society, and these small acts of consideration will help you and ensure future cruisers are welcomed. The journey north begins! After 15 months, my boat is finally back in Kyushu, marking the start of Chasing the Cherry Blossom 2 - a voyage following Japan's iconic Sakura season by sea. Leaving Itoman, I planned to sail overnight to Amami, but as I passed Ieshima, in discussion with Ian, I decided to pull in. That choice was a blessing because I was hit with Norovirus symptoms within hours of arriving. I have decided to have a crew on this journey, along with other changes due to my turning 70 this month. I feel it is prudent What was supposed to be a brief stop turned into a five-day recovery stay, and I couldn't have asked for better surroundings or kinder people. Once back on my feet, I continued on to Yoron, a breathtaking island ringed by coral reefs and the southernmost island of Kyushu. Along the way, I met some incredible people and was especially touched by the warm hospitality at 478 Marina Base Café. If you're ever in the area, I highly recommend stopping by! https://www.instagram.com/478marine_base_/ This is just the beginning of an incredible journey north - subscribe and join me as I chase the cherry blossoms again! ?? ? I'm preparing to leave port and follow Japan's cherry blossom front-a journey that goes beyond sailing. At 70, I'm reflecting on a path similar to my bicycle journey 25 years ago when I cycled the length of Japan during Cherry Blossom Season, the result of a dissertation I wrote for my Masters about Japanese Youth Culture. Now, I'm diving into the secrets of longevity and the lives of Japan's aging population, inspired by Blue Zone studies. In this video, I also repositioned the boat during a six-hour sail around Okinawa's southern cape, perfectly timed to dodge challenging tides-a small change setting the stage for bigger ones. I'm more of a sojourner than a sailor, embracing change with every wave. ? Subscribe for more sailing insights at Pacific Solo on YouTube. Start the year with me as I witness an annual New Year ritual at the marina. A priest performs a blessing to drive out evil spirits and bad luck, and ensure safe journeys for all who sail in and out of the port. Carl, one of the marina staff who acts as an informal English concierge for visiting cruisers, provides insightful narration about the ceremony's significance. Thanks to Carl, from Yonabaru Marina for helping fellow sailors, Pierre and Evelyn and myself understand what was going on, This ritual feels especially poignant as I embark on a significant year-turning 70 and setting sail on my new adventure, Chasing the Cherry Blossom 2: Sailing Beyond the Blue Zone. This blessing marks the start of the year and sets the tone for the journey ahead, filled with hope, purpose, and a little extra luck. Watch to the end because i need your help with something. Join me in this special moment of tradition and reflection, and get inspired by Japan's coastal communities' cultural richness and timeless rituals. Join me in the final video of 2024 as I gear up for my next adventure-Chasing the Cherry Blossom 2 in 2025! This month has been all about preparation, with not one but two haulouts in just two weeks (one of them unexpectedly). The main focus was to prepare Wahine for an incredible journey starting in Q1 of 2025. Key tasks included: - Inspecting and replacing sea cocks. - Painting both above and below the waterline. - Removing the onboard toilets to switch to a composting system. - Tackling a major floorboard project, expertly managed solo by my mate Ian. - After the first haulout, we celebrated by splashing back into the water, going on a refreshing cruise, and swimming in the bay. As I set my sight on 2025, Wahine and I are preparing to explore Japan's aging communities, coastal life, and the role hope plays in longevity-all while following the Sakura (cherry blossoms) from Okinawa's "Blue Zone" to the northernmost regions of Japan. If you are interested in the cost of hauling out in Japan, fast forward to near the end, where I will outline the work done and the costs involved. Amidst the haul-out work on my sailboat Wahine, I caught up with Scott and Mia of SV Tengah, a stunning 54ft Amel. These seasoned sailors arrived in Japan six months ago after an epic journey from the Mediterranean through the South Pacific and, most recently, the Philippines. Every cruiser who comes to Japan asks about anchoring. So this is a hot topic. the two reasons Scott and Mia give for not anchoring are 1. it`s dangerous cuz fishermen are not accustomed to seeing pleasure or small vessels at anchor 2. The `magic of japan` happens at the dockside where you interact with others. Then, they elaborate on other tips, too. Good stuff. Our paths first crossed in Okinawa, where we spent a few weeks at the marina before sailing to the breathtaking Kerama Islands. Over the past six months, I've followed their voyage across Japan as they experienced the incredible food, the warm hospitality of the Japanese people, and the unique challenges of cruising in these waters. As they prepare Tengah for their next passage back to the Philippines and I ready Wahine for Chasing the Cherry Blossom 2, we reflect on their journey. Scott and Mia share valuable tips for anyone considering sailing to Japan or curious about what to expect. Their insights may surprise you! Many cruisers are hesitant to sail Japan-especially in light of Sailing La Vagabonde's recent video about the challenges, including their collision with a fishing vessel. But while it's true that Japan presents unique hurdles, the rewards far outweigh the risks. From jaw-dropping scenery and Michelin-star-worthy cuisine to a history that spans millennia and some of the safest cruising waters in the world, Japan offers an experience unlike any other. But what truly sets it apart? The PEOPLE. ? Japanese hospitality is extraordinary, driven by a cultural duty to welcome visitors with kindness. However, this generosity comes with a responsibility: cruisers must be ultra-sensitive, respectful, and careful not to take advantage of this goodwill. ? Yes, sailing in Japan requires preparation-agents, permits, and local help are essential-but the payoff is unparalleled. If you approach it right, Japan will not just meet your expectations; it will exceed them. ? In this follow-up to my last video, where I responded to Sailing La Vagabonde's five reasons why more sailors don't come to Japan, I address the many comments and questions I received about their recent accident. While most were constructive and appreciative, some included misinformation, criticism, or negativity. That video was filmed before the their collision with a fishing boat, and in this update, I share the facts I know to clarify the situation. More importantly, I step back to provide critical insights for cruisers considering Japan: --- Key points about anchoring in Japan. ----The rhythm and reality of the Japanese fishing industry. Japan offers exceptional cruising opportunities, but understanding its unique maritime culture and practices is essential. Join me as I share lessons learned and encourage thoughtful navigation of these waters. Anchoring is legal in Japan, outside of harbors. It is NOT LEGAL to anchor within a harbor unless, in the rare case, there is a designated anchorage. Sailing La Vagabond was anchored legally outside the harbor. Hence, the Captain of the local fishing boat took responsibility. SLV HAD checked with their agent, Kirk Patterson of Konpira Consulting, to confirm their choice of anchorage was legal. They were not at fault! Also, it is worth noting that with the increase in aqua farming, fishermen's go-to-sea schedules are much more structured and regular than traditional fishing. ?
