However, it has a had a niggling intermittent problem since Spain. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't and because it has a manual override the job of investigating it never found its way to the top of the jobs list, until now. After testing the wiring I traced it back to the circuit board and found a lose terminal block that was inmpossible to repair in situ, so I had to remove before I could get a decent solder repair. It is unfurled by an outhaul furler mounted on the boom. But they DO need cleaning and servicing periodically. Electric 'brushed' motors can become clogged with carbon deposits and the brushes themselves can wear down or simply break. I simple clean and brush replacement can add years to the life of an electric motor. Thanks to ErodexUK (formally ECP) for sourcing the right brushes. Brushless motors, which do not use brushes, have become more popular in many modern applications due to their improved efficiency and reliability.. but not on our boat! Instead of just replacing the magnet I decided our 20 year old in-mast furler mechanism needed a complete upgrade. However, these aren't off the shelf items so with the help of a good friend in New Zealand, I sourced various parts and custom built a new unit which - in my opinion at least - was better than the original and far cheaper than a replacement from Amel. Replacing a stanchion post backing plate SHOULD be one of the easier and cheaper maintenance jobs. I replaced it with a G10 epoxy resin sheet then re-fiberglassed over the repair and finished off with Norski Flowcoat, a type of polyester resin paint. I then tapped it and replaced the stanchion post. The Victron MultiPlus Charger/Inverter is a combined inverter and charger with many features include a true sine wave inverter, adaptive charging, hybrid PowerAssist technology and many integration features. The model I installed was a 24v/3000/70A. There are many variations to this model but they instal and configure in a very similar way. Although the VESmart Dongle lets you control the MultiPlus via bluetooth, it does not allow you to configure/program the unit. For this you need a VE MK-3 Bus Interface Dongle which allows you to connect the MultiPlus to a computer for configuration/programming and firmware updates. This dongle physically plugs into your MultiPlus but does not does not work via bluetooth.
