In part nineteen of this series I complete the hull of my wooden Snipe class sailboat project. I start off by sanding the decks and blending in the rub rails. Then I apply three coats of wood sealer. After the sealer is cured I sand the decks and apply six coats of marine varnish. I let the varnish cure and then sand and apply the final coat of varnish. Next I install the splash guards, forestay mounting point, and chain plate covers. Finally I sand and touch up the paint around the cockpit of the boat. In part eighteen of this series on how to build a wooden Snipe class sailboat I show how to make a tiller and tiller extension for the rudder. I mill the rough parts our of mahogany and then cut them to shape with a bandsaw. Then I hand finish the parts with planes, chisels, and sand paper. In part seventeen of this series on how to build a wooden Snipe class sailboat I show how to make splash guards that mount on the foredeck of the boat. I start off by making a template, and then rough cut the splash guards out of some cherry left over from making the rub rails. Next I show how to scribe the splash guards and fit them to the foredeck. Then I make a center support and show how to calculate the bevels where the guards meet the support.
