Our shakedown cruise on Little Nutshell finally begins as we leave Shotley Marina and head out for our first night aboard. What starts as a simple system check quickly turns into a crooked night on the hard, a muddy hull clean and a whole lot of learning. Join us for boat maintenance, marina mishaps and the real start of our cruising adventure. Magnus installs the battery monitor on the dash and tidies up the electrical cables underneath before we cast off. We finally leave Shotley Marina and begin the first day of our shakedown cruise on Little Nutshell. The plan is to anchor out for the night and check her systems. We head into Tichmarsh Marina to visit the chandlery, as the harbour master has kindly let us pull up alongside. Then it’s out again and onto a mooring for the night, although we still don’t get to test our anchor. We check out the scrubbing poles at the marina, where we plan to head in the early hours of the morning to inspect Little Nutshell’s hull and give her a good clean so we can work out whether she needs antifouling or new anodes. Our calculations aren’t quite right and we end up sitting on the very end of the concrete footings for the scrubbing poles. It’s a crooked night from then on. We check her bottom and she’s in good nick. There aren’t too many barnacles on the hull, but the propeller is smothered in them. Magnus is a real gentleman and does the majority – actually, all – of the cleaning and scrubbing. It’s muddy, slippery and not the most pleasant job. We’re getting ready to sail from the UK to Europe as Magnus sits his CEVNI exam, tackles wiring breakthroughs and sorts out last‑minute boat jobs on Little Nutshell. A storm rolls in while we wait on lithium batteries and solar panels before our North Sea crossing. We leave Suffolk Yacht Club and head for Shotley Marina to pick up the solar panels we’ve been waiting weeks for. Late that night Magnus goes online to sit his CEVNI exam. It’s not an easy test but he passes first go, which means we’re now legal to sail in Europe. All our i’s are dotted and our t’s crossed. It feels good. Magnus does a beer review for Old Midnight Hen while a storm brews outside Little Nutshell. He also tackles a mysterious leak on board. Nothing seems obviously wrong, so he swaps a few parts around and it appears to fix the problem for now. It’s time to do the paperwork for leaving the UK and sailing to Belgium. Magnus files our departure papers online and it’s all starting to feel very real and very exciting. He then gets stuck into the boat’s wiring and finally works out what’s what. His chook scratchings turn into a proper wiring diagram. We hit a dilemma with the beautiful wine bottle holder on the boat. We’ll never use it, but removing it means cutting into a lovely piece of the interior. Do we repurpose the space for a big drawer or leave it as is and lose valuable storage? We haven’t quite yet made up our minds what we will do, as this is a beautiful boat and we don’t want to destroy it. We’ll see. Time will tell which way we go with this. We’re still waiting on the lithium batteries and solar panels from Renogy. They’re not great at communicating and the delivery is well past the published timeframe. It’s frustrating because we can’t cross the North Sea until everything arrives. Winter weather windows are few and far between, so the delays are holding us up. The new lithium batteries finally arrive and Magnus gets to work installing them and sorting out the battery box. The inverter will have to wait for another day when he knows exactly where it should go. We still wait for the solar panels to arrive. As always, thanks for watching. We finally made the decision to bite the bullet and buy a boat. In the end we chose the second Duo 29 we’d seen — the one with the overseas history, international registration and a long list of positives. Because we hadn’t planned on buying a boat, we arrived with nothing. And this time the boat had nothing, absolutely nothing. Unfortunately, every tool, every part, every bit of kit we own is sitting back in Australia, so we had to start from scratch. Our first big purchase for the new Little Nutshell was a new Peanut, which felt like a proper milestone. A new Nutshell, a new Peanut, a new adventure. We gathered everything we’d left with Wendy’s mum, collected parcels from both her house and the marina and added a mountain of shopping on top. After two long drives back and forth, we finally arrived at the marina for good, took possession of the new Nutshell and started moving aboard with what felt like half of Europe in bags and boxes. We finally leave India and fly into London, ready to begin the first chapter of our European Vacation. The plan is to find a motorhome in under a week so we can hit the road and start exploring the UK and Europe properly. Magnus has been doing loads of research, so we’ve arrived with a shortlist of motorhomes to inspect and a rough idea of what our next Nutshell might be. Of course, travel has a way of surprising us. A last minute decision takes us to a mud marina, and suddenly we’re stepping aboard boats as well. It wasn’t part of the plan, but here we are looking at two possible future Nutshells and wondering if our European adventure is about to take a very unexpected turn. We’re torn between two completely different paths. We continue west towards the coast. We end up at Fort Kochi, which is a very famous place. We take a good look around and stay in a wonderful little hotel. We find a great place to eat and have a pizza! We’ve had quite a few weeks of eating India food and it’s time for a break. We take a ride on a country boat but it fails in the middle of the massive channel, with ferries and large boats passing us. We end up on one of the ferries to get back to where we started! It’s quite an experience! Then it’s of to pick up our beautiful Kerala houseboat and spend a night out on the water. It’s wonderful. We also manage to get on another country boat and have a chance to see the smaller waterways of this beautiful place. That wraps up our drive across India. After leaving Australia we fly to India and land in Chennai. We spend some time exploring Chennai and checking out local tourist spots. A wander through Pondi Bazaar gives us a taste of the city’s energy and some superb Indian meals. It’s good to be back. Next we pick up our hire car, the one that’ll take us across India. Once we make our way out of Chennai we head south to Pondicherry, a beautiful area known for its striking buildings and complex past. From there we drive up into the hills to Erode Hill Station where we find the most incredible place to stay. It’s been created from old government buildings, cinemas, bridges and other unexpected structures. No two rooms are the same and the architecture is wonderfully higgledy piggledy. We continue to make our way to Perth via bush camps and windy dirt tracks. We find some amazing wild camp spots with plenty of wildflowers everywhere. We take a sandy track to explore and end up having to turn around because the road is too boggy and we are towing the camper. It’s remote and we don’t want to get bogged with no help in sight. It’s a 3 hour round trip! Worth it though to see the beautiful landscapes. The Valkry gets lots of use and we enjoy getting to know how she cooks. We take a break between tours and head off into the bush to camp. It’s serene, and we’re enjoying the tranquility—until Magnus spots a bushfire heading our way… We leave our camper and move out onto the road, where it’s safer. Later, on our final guided adventure in the Kimberley, we once again find ourselves in the middle of a bushfire! This time, we’re evacuated from camp. After a very quick stop at the farm, we pack everything into the Land Cruiser and begin to make our way to Darwin to check on Nutshell. After checking in on SV Nutshell and making sure she's tickety-boo we do a quick turnaround and head south to Broome to start our tour guiding season in Kimberley. On the way we visit out the Durack Homestead, a historical cattle baron building which was relocated when the Ord River Dam Project flooded the land. We travel along the Ord River on a fast boat. We continue to work on the boat jobs. We’re trying to get the top deck coated so we can leave it safely without water getting in. We are both exhausted. Then, it’s time to head into the marina and empty Nutshell. It takes days to finish as much as we can and finally get her ready to sell. But, as soon as we get to the marina we have two offers on her! We drive to Airlie and back again with stuff, bringing back the LandCruiser and boat trailer to pack everything into. Cyclone Alfred has now passed, but the worst is yet to come. We now have massive trees hurtling towards us and bits of debris. It’s a constant battle to keep removing them from the hulls where they keep getting caught. It’s full on! After a while the banks of the river burst and the current reduces dramatically. We move to more protected waters with less of the river flow, but it’s tricky going as it’s very difficult to manoeuvre the nuthouse in such huge currents. Magnus uses everything that he can to keep Nutty from hurtling toward the sandbanks and riverbanks. It’s a lot. Once that’s all dealt with it’s time to get back to fixing up the roof. The weather is not helping us. It just won’t stop raining and when there is a small weather window, it’s too hot to apply the gelcoat. We can’t get a break. Finally, we decide that we’re just not going to get Nutshell finished and we can only do our best with the short amount of time that we have left. We plan on leaving Nutshell on the hard and coming back to finish her after our Kimberley tour guide season ends September 2025, but, as always seems to happen, plans change… Thanks for watching. We continue working on fixing the roof. It’s time to epoxy the ply boards in so they don’t leak. Magnus gives the carburettors a bit of a tickle up because, as we go to leave our anchorage, the engines aren’t doing as they should. After removing the filter, we realise the fuel in the tank is probably the culprit, so Magnus polishes the fuel with our Mr Funnel fuel funnel. It does an amazing job. Magnus works out an ingenious way to clean Peanut’s hull on shore using a few rope contraptions. Peanut is now ready to go fast again. Wendy heads to the UK to visit family while Magnus continues work on the foredeck and upper deck. It’s hard going as the weather isn’t kind and there are many rainy days, but he makes progress.
