Our liveaboard sailboat tour! Each day we get closer to casting off—but there’s still a mountain of work to do before we can sail north toward Scotland. In this video, I’ll show you around the inside of our sailboat—the small, well-worn space that’s becoming home. A lot of you have been asking for an interior tour, so here it is: the galley, the berth, the storage, and all the corners where we’ve tried to make a simple life work on the water. Along the way, I’ll talk a bit about what still needs fixing, the jobs left before we can leave, and what it really feels like to live aboard while preparing for a long voyage. If you’re new here, this channel follows our slow, rugged journey toward a wilder, freer life—one small repair, one storm, and one sunrise at a time. You are the reason we create this content. Step inside our old wooden sailboat, W. Grebe. In this video, I take you through the pilot house — the heart of this old sailing vessel — and show the electronic controls, navigation systems, and the unique variable pitch propeller setup that makes Grebe handle so differently under power. This is a quiet look at life aboard a classic wooden boat. You’ll see where I helm the boat, how the engine controls work, and what it’s like to live and work on a small yacht built for real, practical seamanship. The pilot house is more than just a wheel and throttle — it’s the command centre for everything that happens on board. We're starting to think about the logistics of sailing W. Grebe to Scotland! The variable pitch propeller is an interesting system that lets the skipper adjust blade pitch instead of engine RPM to control thrust. It’s smooth, efficient, but difficult to master at marina-speed. For those who’ve followed my channel, you’ll know I live aboard full-time. Every video I share is filmed and edited here on this boat — powered by the same systems you’ll see in this video. It’s a slower, more deliberate way of living: learning the old skills, understanding the sea, and keeping a vessel like this alive through care and curiosity. If you’re new here, welcome aboard. This episode marks a milestone — my first solo move aboard W. Grebe, our classic wooden sailboat. I start the classic Sabb diesel engine and test the variable-pitch propeller while moving her to a new slip. A little bit of mayhem at the final moments! The Norwegian Sabb diesel is an unusual engine — hand-crankable, simple, and built like a tank. Starting it is unorthodox but deeply satisfying. With the variable-pitch prop, docking requires finesse rather than throttle. It’s a learning curve, but everything works smoothly as Grebe moves under her own power once again. If you’re into traditional boats, slow engineering, or bringing old vessels back to life, you’ll enjoy this one. Today marks a huge milestone for W. Grebe — her sails are finally going up for the very first time! With Rick’s help (@WhatsNext-acrc ) we figured out how to hoist her gaff-rigged sails, and while it wasn’t all smooth sailing, this is the moment she truly became a sailboat again. ⛵ Grebe is a classic wooden gaff-rigged sailboat, built on Denman Island, BC. She’s been a project of restoration, repair, and learning for years, and today we crossed an important threshold: seeing her sails rise and feeling the boat come alive. Hoisting a gaff-rigged sail is no small task — the lines, the blocks, the coordination — it all takes practice, teamwork, and patience. This video captures the first step toward our ultimate goal: sailing Grebe across the Atlantic to Scotland. Every milestone, every lesson learned, and every moment on this journey is being shared here so you can follow along. Whether you’re a sailor, a wooden boat enthusiast, or just love following adventure and craftsmanship, there’s something here for you. After a couple of weeks of boat work on the hard, our wooden sailboat W. Grebe finally returns to the Pacific. In this episode, we wrap up the last jobs before launch: fresh bottom paint, checking and replacing zincs, and testing the electrical bonding system. These are the unglamorous but essential parts of owning a classic boat — the work that keeps her safe, sound, and ready for sea. This video covers: - Applying new bottom paint to protect the hull - Inspecting and replacing the zincs (sacrificial anodes) - Testing the electrical bonding to make sure the system works properly - Final checks before the launch - The big moment: W. Grebe’s first splash back into the water For anyone who’s owned or loved a wooden sailboat, you know the mix of nerves and joy on launch day. She’s been blocked up on the hard for weeks, maybe months, and suddenly she’s rolling toward the travel lift. The straps tighten, the boat rises, and then — she’s floating again! For us, this isn’t just another maintenance job. W. Grebe is part of a much bigger story. She’s a classic wood gaff-rigged sailboat, built here in British Columbia. Mary and I are preparing her for the voyage of a lifetime — to sail her from Canada across the Atlantic Ocean to Scotland. Every bit of sanding, painting, and testing brings us closer to that horizon. We’ve learned that the romance of wooden sailboat life is built on days like this. It’s not all sunsets and sails — it’s also antifouling paint, zinc dust on your hands, and double-checking wires in the bilge. The truth is: without these small victories, the bigger adventures never happen. If you’re new here, welcome aboard. This channel is where we share the real process of living with and sailing a wooden boat — the work, the adventure, and the dream of crossing an ocean together. This week, I take you through island life from the saddle of a motorcycle, the deck of a sailboat, and a story that changed everything. It starts with a beach walk on Vancouver Island, asking a simple question: how can I catch more seafood without a boat? Shoreline foraging is on my mind as I think about living closer to the land—simpler, more self-reliant, and in rhythm with the tides. Then I revisit a critical rigging failure while crossing the Strait of Georgia—when I lost my forestay mid-crossing. A moment that reminded me that the ocean doesn’t care if you’re ready. You either are, or you aren’t. Finally, Mary returns to the boat—and we each tell the story of how we met (separately)! This is the first episode of 2025 and a chance to begin again on the story of John and the old Newport 28 sailboat that he lives on. In this episode, John's good friend, Kevin @fromthewildca comes to visit while Mary is away in Colorado. Red Rock Crab, right off the dock, are on the menu as well as a minor repair the sailboat's wood stove. After a summer of big changes and many adjustments, life is settled to the point where the videos can continue. The plan is to release between 12 and 20 episodes this year. This will be an archive of the adventures that John and Mary enjoy this year. There are plans for fly fishing trips and backcountry camping as well as the out-of-the-ordinary lifestyle of simply living on a sailboat on the Pacific Ocean. The plan still exists for John to sail to Scotland to meet up with Mary to get married, but for now, we need to focus on saving money for the bigger boat along with all of the other adventurous plans we have in mind. This year, we'll be learning to sail around the southern Gulf Islands along with a few other trips, like the Yukon to fly fish for Grayling! John returns from visiting Colorado to get our sailboat ready for Mary! Living on a sailboat is a unique lifestyle, and we can't wait to share our journey with you. I am back to living on a sailboat! The trip to visit Mary and her friends and family in Colorado was wonderful...it was difficult to leave. But now, the plans have definitely swung into gear to get the boat ready for her. The idea is that she will be living on the Vie Sauvage by mid-September and there is stuff to accomplish here to be able to make that happen. I need to downsize further and keep the varnish and boat work going to be able to afford the move, and for us to live comfortably here on the boat. The Varnish King business is going well...but it is definitely occupying a lot of time and effort. I've spent the past several months a little lost for purpose if I'm being honest...now is the time to push hard and make stuff happen so that the channel can live up to it's potential. Making this content and growing the channel requires money. The new business is accomplishing that, and some key relationships have formed that are about to transform the channel here. I still need time to practice sailing, and to explore! Again, as it often happens, the idea came to me from a chance discussion with a new friend, Sebastian. I used his old business name, Varnish King, and made a few Facebook posts. Now I have some wood refinishing gigs going and money is flowing better. Now though is the time to bear down with this work and build up the coffers to get comfortable. I am really looking forward to my upcoming trip to Colorado to meet Mary's friends and family. I've never been to that state. Mary has been sending me pictures of her adventures and it looks amazing. I have two weeks before that trip to go hard and save some money. Then, when I get back, I'll work for a couple weeks more until Mary can get here in late August. Once she is here on the boat, the travel expenses will be lessened and the focus can go back to finding the new boat, sailing, and exploring the Gulf Islands off the coast of Vancouver Island...together. Again, I am not quite there yet with what I had envisioned with the channel. But, this is the reality of what is going on with me. I've never been happier or more satisfied with my life...so I'm just going to share that with all of you and let the chips fall where they may. I have found my forever person. The rest will just all come together into something amazing here on the channel...I can feel it happening! 00:00 Intro 05:16 Big recap of the journey so far 07:10 I feel like I'm winning Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/johnswildlife Amazon Author Page - Journals and books by John David Schneider - https://www.amazon.com/stores/John-David-Schneider/author/B0CDQVTGDL?ref=ap_rdr&isDramIntegrated=true&shoppingPortalEnabled=true YouTube Membership - https://www.youtube.com/@JohnFrasersWildLife/membership John’s Wild Life Shop - https://www.johnswildlife.com/the-store Cubic Mini Woodstoves - https://cubicminiwoodstoves.com/collections/all?ref=yzg3ndi Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCG6diCN-nm_nUS-BS-hJHTA/join
