This week, I take you through island life from the saddle of a motorcycle, the deck of a sailboat, and a story that changed everything. It starts with a beach walk on Vancouver Island, asking a simple question: how can I catch more seafood without a boat? Shoreline foraging is on my mind as I think about living closer to the land-simpler, more self-reliant, and in rhythm with the tides. Then I revisit a critical rigging failure while crossing the Strait of Georgia-when I lost my forestay mid-crossing. A moment that reminded me that the ocean doesn't care if you're ready. You either are, or you aren't. Finally, Mary returns to the boat-and we each tell the story of how we met (separately)! Just real life, and the story of the moment I knew everything was about to change. We dropped anchor in the southern Gulf Islands, gathered beach wood for a fire in the wood stove, and unplugged for a peaceful night aboard. The next day, we hiked across this wild, mossy island-one of BC's most magical marine parks with a surprising history, Portland Island, Canada. Wrestling the tender onto the dock went horribly wrong? but we still set sail and found peace in Princess Bay. Cozy fire and candlelight dinner, wild hikes, and off-grid life in BC's Gulf Islands. ?? Sailing to Portland Island | Tender Almost Fail + A Cozy Night in Princess Bay This adventure did not start smoothly? I wrestled the tender onto the dock, nearly lost it back into the water, and had to scrape it clean before we could even leave. What does it take to leave everything behind and start a new life on the water? She talks candidly about the emotional highs and lows of adjusting to liveaboard life, the process of organizing our small space, and how this transition helped to heal old wounds. This is the first episode of 2025 and a chance to begin again on the story of John and the old Newport 28 sailboat that he lives on. In this episode, John's good friend, Kevin @fromthewildca comes to visit while Mary is away in Colorado. Red Rock Crab, right off the dock, are on the menu as well as a minor repair the sailboat's wood stove. After a summer of big changes and many adjustments, life is settled to the point where the videos can continue. The plan is to release between 12 and 20 episodes this year. This will be an archive of the adventures that John and Mary enjoy this year. There are plans for fly fishing trips and backcountry camping as well as the out-of-the-ordinary lifestyle of simply living on a sailboat on the Pacific Ocean. The plan still exists for John to sail to Scotland to meet up with Mary to get married, but for now, we need to focus on saving money for the bigger boat along with all of the other adventurous plans we have in mind. This year, we'll be learning to sail around the southern Gulf Islands along with a few other trips, like the Yukon to fly fish for Grayling! Don't worry, Mary will be appearing in episodes beginning February! John returns from visiting Colorado to get our sailboat ready for Mary! Living on a sailboat is a unique lifestyle, and we can't wait to share our journey with you. I am back to living on a sailboat! The trip to visit Mary and her friends and family in Colorado was wonderful...it was difficult to leave. But now, the plans have definitely swung into gear to get the boat ready for her. The idea is that she will be living on the Vie Sauvage by mid-September and there is stuff to accomplish here to be able to make that happen. I need to downsize further and keep the varnish and boat work going to be able to afford the move, and for us to live comfortably here on the boat. The Varnish King business is going well...but it is definitely occupying a lot of time and effort. I've spent the past several months a little lost for purpose if I'm being honest...now is the time to push hard and make stuff happen so that the channel can live up to it's potential. Making this content and growing the channel requires money. The new business is accomplishing that, and some key relationships have formed that are about to transform the channel here. We have some big news around all of this in the coming weeks and months. Join me as I share an update on my sailing journey and my life now. From exploring new destinations to the challenges of life on a sailboat, this travel vlog gives you a glimpse into my adventures aboard my Newport 28 sailboat. The ads pay the bills...please watch the video all the way through. I've started a new business! I've been thinking of ways to get myself, and this channel, sustainable. Growth is happening at a good pace, but until it is fully financially feasible, I need to work. It seems easy to just get a job...and it is, but the challenge with that was time. I still need time to practice sailing, and to explore! Again, as it often happens, the idea came to me from a chance discussion with a new friend, Sebastian. I used his old business name, Varnish King, and made a few Facebook posts. Now I have some wood refinishing gigs going and money is flowing better. Now though is the time to bear down with this work and build up the coffers to get comfortable. I am really looking forward to my upcoming trip to Colorado to meet Mary's friends and family. I've never been to that state. Mary has been sending me pictures of her adventures and it looks amazing. I have two weeks before that trip to go hard and save some money. Then, when I get back, I'll work for a couple weeks more until Mary can get here in late August. Once she is here on the boat, the travel expenses will be lessened and the focus can go back to finding the new boat, sailing, and exploring the Gulf Islands off the coast of Vancouver Island...together. Again, I am not quite there yet with what I had envisioned with the channel. But, this is the reality of what is going on with me. I've never been happier or more satisfied with my life...so I'm just going to share that with all of you and let the chips fall where they may. I have found my forever person. The rest will just all come together into something amazing here on the channel...I can feel it happening! 00:00 Intro 05:16 Big recap of the journey so far 07:10 I feel like I'm winning Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/johnswildlife Amazon Author Page - Journals and books by John David Schneider - https://www.amazon.com/stores/John-David-Schneider/author/B0CDQVTGDL?ref=ap_rdr&isDramIntegrated=true&shoppingPortalEnabled=true YouTube Membership - https://www.youtube.com/@JohnFrasersWildLife/membership John's Wild Life Shop - https://www.johnswildlife.com/the-store Cubic Mini Woodstoves - https://cubicminiwoodstoves.com/collections/all?ref=yzg3ndi Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCG6diCN-nm_nUS-BS-hJHTA/join
Is this the "forever boat"? Please remember to hit that "like" button and share the channel with friends! We're looking at the possibility of purchasing this old boat for our off-shore sailing life ahead. The goal is still in sight, to sail to Scotland! This sailboat could be the one that gets us there. "Avenger II" is a classic design, built in 1963 but a throw back design that reminds me of 30's sailboats. I also talk about the plan to be able to afford this boat and the new business venture...Varnish King BC. Things are taking off here in Sidney, BC and I'm working hard at making ends meet to be able to get sailing again. 9.8 knots yesterday afternoon while out sailing on this vintage sailboat! I know many of you have been much faster on a sailboat, but this was my fastest ever. The beautiful, long lines on this 43 foot 1963 Sparkman and Stephens helped get us up to speed. We were blowing past other boats! ? If two sailboats are going in the same direction, it's a race!
This sailing journey continues and the universe is colliding; so, all I need to do is sit back and let it happen. After weeks and months of persevering through hardships and mishaps, we've hit some great fortune. Arriving in Canoe Cove, we've secured a spot for Vie Sauvage...and Mary joins us for a visit! You will see more of her in future episodes and I know you will welcome her with open hearts. The hunt is now on for a bigger, blue water boat that can take us to Scotland and possibly beyond. There are still many hurdles to overcome, like finding a way to pay for a new boat and continuing with the sailing miles, but things are finally clicking into place and I feel like there is a plan in motion. Now that we have a home base here in Canada, I can focus on making some money to fund the new boat and the sailing expedition. Picture this: I was cruising at full speed, the wind was perfect, and both sails were loaded to their fullest. Vie Sauvage and I were flying across the Strait of Georgia, making our way towards Porlier Pass. It was one of those days that reminded me why I fell in love with sailing. The water was glistening, and the wind was brisk in my favor. Then, out of nowhere, there was a sudden "bang." The next thing I knew, the sailboat lurched violently to starboard. Time seemed to slow down as I scrambled to regain control of the boat and prevent the mast from collapsing. With the forestay broken and limited options, I decided to motor towards Wallace Island to meet up with my friends, Rick and Anna. The seas were rough, and I was too far into the channel to turn back safely. Every wave and gust of wind was a reminder of how precarious my situation was, I became determined to reach my destination. Upon arriving at Wallace Island, I took a few days to assess the damage and contemplate my next steps. The forestay, a critical component of the rigging, needed immediate attention. After careful consideration, I decided to make the three-hour journey to Maple Bay, BC, and the Maple Bay Yacht Club. I knew it was my best chance to get the repairs done properly. At the Maple Bay Yacht Club, I was met with incredible kindness and support. The yacht club members were not only hospitable but also highly knowledgeable. Over the next week, I worked tirelessly alongside people I met to climb the mast 4 times, and rebuild the forestay. The process was demanding, but their camaraderie and expertise, along with the gut-check of having to climb the forty feet on a swaying piece of aluminum on Vie Sauvage, made the repair possible. Throughout this ordeal, I learned invaluable lessons about the importance of preparedness, the strength of community, and the resilience required to face unexpected challenges at sea. This journey was not just about fixing a broken forestay; it was about overcoming adversity, relying on the kindness of strangers, and the unbreakable spirit of adventure that drives adventurers to continue on. In this video, you'll see the highs and lows of this harrowing experience. From the moment of disaster to the meticulous repair process. I hope my story inspires you to embrace the challenges that come your way and to appreciate the incredible people you meet along the path of life. As a Canadian in Washington, I had to exit the U.S. prior to the end of May. My friend Rick, aka @WhatsNext-acrc, hooked me up with a perfect spot to park Vie Sauvage on Shelter Island, right on the Fraser River. Saying goodbye to Point Roberts was a heartfelt moment. Since last August, that dock has been the backdrop to so many memories. It's a place that will always hold a special spot in my heart. Our game plan? Sail to Steveston, BC, for a night's rest, then catch the ideal tide up the Fraser River the next afternoon. Conditions weren't perfect for a full sail, and we'll dive into why. But, we made it to Shelter Island, and that's where the real adventure begins! This is about to get good! I want to thank the Patreon subscribers for all of their help. Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCG6diCN-nm_nUS-BS-hJHTA/join This week I am getting even more sailing experience. I went on two outings on the racing yacht, Opus, soaking in as much knowledge as possible and then a couple practice sailings on my own. Tacking is getting to be normalized in my mind, and Vie Sauvage and I are beginning to get in tune with each other. The sailing is getting easier every time we go out together. For those that don't know me, my name is John David Schneider, and last year at this time I was an organic grain farmer and farming entrepreneur in north-central Alberta, Canada. Now I am living on this vintage sailboat, fixing her up from practically sinking at the dock. She is now running swiftly on the Pacific Ocean off the coast of British Columbia. Vie Sauvage is a 1981 Newport 28 and we've resurrected each other equally. I am on an epic quest to sail to Scotland...to start. Scotland is my ancestral home and was the first place I thought of when it occurred to me that I could sail anywhere in the world.
