Welcome to our latest #CruisingConversation with Evan and Karly aka Navigating Nietzels. What happens when high school sweethearts from the middle of America, decide to enjoy some boating adventures and film their story while working from their trawler? It’s all here on their YouTube channel, Navigating Nietzels – Here is a link so you can subscribe and follow along. https://www.youtube.com/@navigatingnietzels One message that kept coming through it is their theme, “Don’t wait for someday…” They are floating proof that if you have the desire, you can find an affordable trawler and set it up for taking on the Great Loop. They have enjoyed thirteen months of cruising and working, guided by their enthusiasm, optimism and their loveable dog, Ripley. This video originated when Jeff attended the May 2025 AGLCA (America’s Great Loop Cruising Association) event in Norfolk, VA aboard the Ocean Alexander Classicco 50 Lightning to learn more about trawlers doing the Loop (and in the hopes of finding a buyer for Lightning). JMYS encourages everyone thinking about doing the Loop to join AGLCA and attend their events – they are first class. The owner of Lightning asked Jeff if he was following Evan and Karly’s channel, Navigating Nietzels. The conversation started something like, “You’ve got to meet the Nietzels; they also have a YouTube Channel”. Why not? After a brief introduction on the docks—they were a couple of slips over from Lightning—we agreed to meet the next morning aboard Northern Latitude for an impromptu interview. With no preconceived notions or background, it was a fresh conversation with a younger couple just beginning their trawler lifestyle journey. We set up our video cameras, sat in their saloon and enjoyed an unscripted, general conversation about their background and their early days starting the Great Loop. What a treat! Evan and Karly are personable, thoughtful and just great people to hang out with. I was impressed with their energy and enjoyed hearing about their story that others had already been watching online. There is so much good stuff on YouTube, it is always rewarding to discover an interesting new channel. The Norfolk AGLCA event ended, the film footage that was recorded became a back burner project for all of us, and ultimately the interview was never composed into a video. Fast forward to Fort Lauderdale TrawlerFest in February 2026 when we met up again and lamented that we never found time to produce that video from our first meeting. By this time, Evan and Karly were less than 100 miles from finishing the Great Loop and the ultimate Looper accomplishment, crossing their wake. Like many others who subscribe and watch their episodes I felt I knew them pretty well from the content they shared. We talked about shooting a new film and splicing the original in between. Trawlerfest had just wrapped up for the day and our friends at Selene Yachts Americas let us set up in the pilothouse of the gorgeous Selene 60 Classic, Kaimana. We turned on the cameras and set out to finish what we started – catching up on their Loop lessons and talking about their future, which seems to be a planned continuation to work while aboard, sharing their lives with an ever-expanding audience of YouTube subscribers. Seeker is an extraordinary Selene ocean trawler that has enjoyed the benefits of proper attention and care. She is in like-new condition and compares very favorably with a new build (which would take over one year to complete). Seeker is hull number 115 in this popular Selene design series. Seeker is a late model, Selene 56 in like-new condition currently enjoying time in the Bahamas. This Selene 56 is the “deep hull” configuration with more headroom in the engine room and the cruisers stern aft which provides a bit more waterline underway and is softens floating at anchor. Her arrangement summary is: three staterooms, two heads, single engine, double walking side decks. She was originally based in the Pacific northwest and became an amazing auction opportunity that her second owners couldn’t pass up. They upgraded and outfitted in Washington and after a summer enjoying Alaska cruising, they embarked on a great adventure, sailing her around to the US east coast through the Panama Canal. During their stewardship many notable improvements have taken place, two that top the list are the addition of air conditioning and painting the hull. The hull was painted in Stuart, FL in late 2023. Seekers owners have done a masterful job of keeping her clean, fresh and ready to cruise. She has proven to be an excellent vessel for this active owner operator couple. They have enjoyed operating her as a couple and also traveling with friends and family. Her generous size and clever layout provide spacious accommodations comparable to the Selene 60 and she has enjoyed long, comfortable passages with plenty of space for entertaining and cruising with guests. Guests will appreciate the private staterooms (a VIP and double bunk) that share a head and shower. You have a secure path on deck with symmetrical double walking side decks hemmed with tall bulwarks that connect the cockpit and the foredeck via the Portuguese bridge. The flybridge is capped with the much-desired fiberglass hard top and this area with two helm chairs and a settee with table is a great place to enjoy cruising, at rest and underway. Powered by a 410 HP single engine Cummins QSL9410MDI. This provides an economical cruising speed of 7.8 knots which can provide a range of approximately 2,800 miles. The deep-keel model creates a taller engine room adding convenience to access for maintenance and service. For comfort underway her Keypower hydraulic active fin stabilizers help her track on an even keel. When docking, you have the convenience of electric bow and stern thrusters. For anchoring out, she has a Maxwell horizontal windlass on the bow with two large anchors ready to be deployed. The interior of Seeker is a stunning example of Jet-Tern Marine old world craftsmanship. Her light teak woodwork is warm and soothing. The owners have added artwork and personal items to make her their home afloat (artwork and decorations do not convey with the purchase). The 2026 Fort Lauderdale Trawlerfest enjoyed spring break weather and a boat load of new trawlers in a variety of sizes much to the delight of trawler owners, buyers, and boating enthusiasts. The first of three events sponsored by PassageMaker magazine established a lot of momentum. There were five days of seminars with the three “boat show” on the docks of the famous Bahia Mar resort. The dates were February 24 – 28. JMYS continues to support this event through our attendance and contributions as a national sponsor of Trawlerfest. Our family team includes Jeff and Pam Merrill along with Pam’s father, Jon Ingebrigsten. New to the JMYS team, Mark Benno, was aboard for the entire event in his new trawler specialist role and a highlight was having Mark and his wife, Catherine, joining the “Cruisers Roundtable” open discussion on Friday night. We did not have any boats on display this year, but our tent display was a welcome gathering spot for seeing old friends and meeting new friends. Next Dimension is in exceptional condition, well maintained with low hours and light use. She is hull 54 in this popular Nordhavn 40 series. Next Dimension is a second generation (built by South Coast in China). The consumption entry document from when she was newly imported into the US (CBP-7501) will be handed to the buyer. The first 45 hulls were built by Pacific Seacraft in California. All Nordhavn 40s are born from the same tooling, but PAE, the parent company of Nordhavn, differentiates the two versions in this series as Mark I US made, and Mark II China built. This design has generous interior accommodations (saloon and galley on the entry level, raised pilothouse and two staterooms with one head on the lower level) and a seakindly ride through the water. Next Dimension was ordered with the optional fly bridge, which provides an excellent outdoor area above the pilothouse for taking command underway or relaxing when at rest. The saloon is spacious because it is pushed out on both sides, no wasted space filled with rarely used walking side decks. The entry level merges the saloon into the galley with a set of stairs up to the raised pilothouse or down to the accommodations deck. The owner stateroom is forward, there is a shared head and shower and the guest stateroom has two bunk berths. The engine room is surprisingly spacious, benefitting from the proprietary “maintenance strakes” in the hull mold that provides additional headroom on both sides of the main engine. Systems and equipment are selected and installed for reliability and service ease. The pilothouse is arranged for optimal operation with good sight lines and easy to reach controls. The flybridge adds a second command station and the tender is mounted on the boat deck, launched by the mast and boom. For stabilization, she has both paravane outriggers and active fin stabilizers. The Nordhavn 40 is a full displacement trawler that was designed and built to transit oceans. A sistership completed a 26-week circumnavigation in 2001 (with listing broker Jeff Merrill crewing a leg). The Nordhavn 40 design is the smallest passage maker built by PAE and boasts a 3,000 mile range. Most Nordhavn 40 owners are “owner operators” who enjoy the reliability of this design and savor time aboard, planning, traveling and resting at anchor. The Nordhavn 55 Tabula Rasa has SOLD! She closed in January 2026. This video was prepared for marketing and promotion, but between filming in August 2025 and video production in September 2025, a full price offer was received and the video was put on hold. The sellers of Tabula Rasa were the second owners of this Nordhavn 55, but really the first “users” and cruised extensively in the Caribbean. Tabula Rasa is a unique Nordhavn 55, a 2006 model year. Tabula Rasa is hull 18 in the Nordhavn 55 series. She was actively cruised, ventured far and stayed in tropical locations for extended periods. Welcome to our latest #CruisingConversation with Nathan and Lindsey from The 71 Percent! The adventures of The 71 Percent have already captured headlines as they have taken command of a new Selene 49 down under. In 2026 they are one of the biggest trawler stories as their growing audience of YouTube subscribers are following their trip across the Pacific from Australia to North America. This video was filmed aboard a freshly completed Selene 51 during the Selene Grand Opening celebration in early December 2025. The Jet Tern Marine yard in Zhuhai, China was in red carpet – VIP – celebration mode - and it was an amazing couple of days for Howard Chen and all of the team at Selene. Jeff was able to catch up with Nathan and Lindsay at the yard – they had flown up from Australia where they were in the middle of preparations for their Pacific crossing. They soaked up the highlights and spoke to the dealers from all over the world to share some about their trip. None of this would be possible without the collaboration between Selene Australia and Selene Americas – there is a positive vibe throughout the dealer network that is incredibly productive. Nathan and Lindsey had a blast seeing the yard, inspecting boats in construction, meeting the workers and spending time with other Selene owners. For them it was fun to enjoy a quick break before getting back to business for final tasks before taking off on their Selene adventure. It’s kind of hard to introduce people who everybody already knows, but there are many people who are always interested and can’t get enough of Nathan and Lindsey. We were able to have a fun discussion on board to review their planning, preparation and giddiness of outfitting a serious trawler for the type of deep water travel it is designed for. A lot more goes into this type of commitment – weather windows, engine room checks, standing watch, navigation and routing, tools, spare parts, organizing provisions, cooking, when and whether to have crew, living a full life underway…it’s not just get-the-camera-out-and-film. Looking back at this short pilothouse discussion, I have to admit I’m even more impressed. Nathan and Lindsey are approachable, friendly, kind, genuine, authentic and just great, fun people with a lot of energy that comes through loud and clear in their YouTube and Instagram, which they spend hours producing. The 2025 Baltimore Trawlerfest brought trawler owners, buyers, and boating enthusiasts together for three “boat show” days on the docks of the Baltimore Inner Harbor September 25-27. She was also ordered with the widebody deck layout. The Kadey Krogen 58 Pilothouse design is an exceptional long-range trawler designed and built to accommodate an active cruising couple. Tapestry is a magnificent rendition of the popular two-stateroom, two-head layout with an open office. Tapestry is offered for sale by her third owners after some light use over the past three years with mostly local cruising. The entry level has the saloon merging into the galley. The interior is furnished with a very pleasing, light cherry wood finish. Carpet covers the parquet wood soles. The interior included Corian counter tops and Ultra-leather upholstery. The galley features a Viking propane cooktop; the pilothouse is a great collection of navigation and communication electronics. The sellers of Ranger owned a Nordhavn 35 previously and are experienced trawler cruisers, airplane pilots and RV campers – they enjoy the best and take good care of their possessions. The “non-flybridge” model is sought after by purists who prefer the sleeker, low-profile look. Ranger is hull 25 in the Nordhavn 47 series. The popular two stateroom and two head configuration is a great layout. Her teak interior with granite counters is fitted out with the beautiful craftsmanship you appreciate on every Nordhavn.
