#ESNS001 Heceta Light House OR - Gas Works Park Seattle WA - Bellingham Bay WA - #Avata2 #4k Footage
Just a few shots from a few different locations on my new FPV Avata 2 from DJI. First up was from one of my recent drives from San Francisco to Washington up along the Pacific coast. I came across the Heceta Lighthouse which can be seen for 21 nautical miles (keeping things boat related). Next was a super fun picnic I attended at Gas Works Park in Seattle WA. Very interesting remnants of the old gasification plant protrude from the ground and the site presented a challenge flying the Avata 2. Finally I fly a little around Bellingham Bay, checking out the Bellingham High School sailing team practice as the sun went down. Very Beautiful.
Join me as I take on the challenge of adding an electric motor to the back of my 32 foot sailboat - can I really use it instead of relying on diesel? My diesel motor has been acting up. Instead of forking over probably 2k for engine repair, I foolishly decided to spend about the same amount on adding a 24v 5.0hp electric motor to the back of my boat. First I had to build a stable and secure motor mount that I could attach the Haswing 5.0hp electric motor to. Then I had to remove all the wires so that a machine shop could extend the shaft. Then I had to put it all back together again. It was a great project, but not exactly a success. Got any suggestions? In this Channel Update video I read a list of all the projects that I've managed to complete while living in Sailboat Life Stuck Mode. My Perkins Diesel has been acting up, and I decided to change the oil pan gasket by myself... It didn't work. I've decided to go Electric in 2025, and I've got a plan. In the meantime, below is a list of parts and gadgets that I bought from amazon to make these upgrades. Hopefully it helps someone out there. I got a new camera that goes on my hat! Check out this Point Of View perspective of Solo Sailing on San Francisco Bay on my Classic Cruising yacht, a 32' Ericson from 1976. Learning how to sail is one thing. Learning how to sail by yourself; that's another thing altogether. In this video I go through all the steps of single hand sailing technique... at least my current techniques, and at least until the camera died. I start out in the safety of the slip and cast off... I shove off. Then I pull in all the fenders and ready the main sail. With R2D2 at the helm I hoist away! A few sloppy tacks come next and then it's time to throw out the fenders again and return to the slip. In this epic episode of my sailing adventure, I do 2 things! 1st on the list was to rip out the old toilet, a.k.a. the SH**TER! So I started by removing the bed. Making Dagny more comfy and less smelly in this one. I made it back to Daggers! At the biggening of this video I show a few choice moments of my Train/Plane journey from Chicago to sunny California where it was raining. This will be the 1st video in a 3 part series that documents my March Madness trip to my 32' Ericson Sailboat. You may notice that there is no music in this episode. It is what we'd a call a Nat-Sound, or Natural Sound piece. I'm experimenting with different editing styles for these videos. What do you think? So Back in Cali on Daggers I was without transportation. Since I didn't know how useful it was going to be I opted for the Jasion EB7 2.0 which I purchased on Amazon for $739. It was one of the cheaper ebikes for sale. If you purchase the ebike via this link, I'll get some money or something: https://amzn.to/459Y7H3 The bike folds up and got me to work on time, so I give it 2 thumbs up and I'd highly recommend it, especially for getting things to and from the hardware store. In this episode I get settled into Dagny's new slip at Oyster Point Marina in San Francisco Bay. Many sailboat life projects got ticked off the list including climbing the mast and running aground a little. Hey, if you're going to run aground, this is the way it's done. The video wraps up with a quick lesson on how to solo sail... when you have someone to hold the camera. This is a Sailboat Life cautionary tale. In this video I moved my 32' Ericson south from the Napa Valley Marina where I just completed my first bottom job to Oyster Point Marina which will be Dagny's new home. Things were going great and we even had some favorable wind to get us there, but I overlooked one major thing; I didn't wear a lifejacket! I know, I know. You don't need to remind me in the comments. Also in this video I experiment with Google Earth Studio for some epic fly-over shots If you'd like to help me achieve my sailboat life dream, consider becoming a Patreon or helping out on Paypal! https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=QRY32Z64LYWF4 https://www.patreon.com/EdwardSeaton You can help for as little as 3$ per month and every little bit helps. Sailboat Life on the Hard was some of the hardest Sailboat jobs that I've done so far. I chose the Napa Valley Marina over all the other Marinas in the San Francisco Bay area because they were the only one that would allow me to stay on my sailboat while I was doing the work. If you live on your sailboat like I do, this is kinda important! Super cool boat sled that they use to haul your boa out of the water, and then it's sanding, Sanding, SANDING! I hate sanding. Got 3 coats of expensive bottom coat on the bottom of Dagny. Managed some basic engine maintenance, and managed to get it all done in 9 days. Total cost was about $1700! Big THANK YOU to the Napa Valley Marina. Their staff was super respectful and answered all my dumb questions. Thankfully I wasn't Solo Sailing for my 1st real passage, but unfortunately there wasn't much sailing going on either. Join me and my buddy as we take Dagny south from Bodega Bay, CA out into the open ocean! The 1st leg of our journey from Bodega Bay to Drakes Bay was 26.1 NM. The next leg from Drakes Bay to San Rafael, CA was 38 NM. Then it was north to Vallejo, CA and finally up the Napa River to the Napa Valley Marina where Dagny would spend some time on the hard. In this long over-due video update I go for a walk and explain what I'm up to with my life and this youtube sailing channel. I've been preparing to leave Bodega Bay for the Napa Valley Marina where I will get Dagny (my boat) lifted out of the water so that I can repaint the bottom. Then I'm off to the Redwood City Marina where I will be leaving the boat for a few months. I need to head back to Chicago to help my father with his house and hopefully clock in to do some freelance work. I'm calling the electric dinghy motor project, done... for now. What I did was remove all the componenets that I had previously installed which were, a RC reciever, the 5v power supply for the RC reciever, the old burnt-out speed controller, and the the 24v dc-dc converter. The plan was to wire the 2, 4 amp/hr batteries in parallel which would give me aproximately 20 volts to power a 24 volt motor. Some comments here on YT have led me to believe that this would be the most efficient option. The new speed controller which is 10-50 volt input with 100 amp output, and a fan. It works great, and I shouldn't have wasted all that money on those other components. The new speed controller was $60 and was really all I needed to make this thing go. Also in this video is a brief review on my new (new to me) Samsung S21 Ultra smart phone. I picked one up from BackMarket.com for $400! Brand new these phones were selling for $1400! Good deal and a great camera! I have not been able to get out to do much sailing practice lately because I've been filming for another client! Paid Work! OMG. So, I'm dipping into the archives a bit to release this video on how to, and why you should, shoot a slingshot. I really didn't know what I was filming at the time, so I set the footage aside and concentrated on the sailing videos BUT! we can't always be sailing so this is a video about one of my favorite hobbies which is, shootin sh!! In this video I ramble on about how to load a slingshot, both 1 handed and 2 handed methods are discussed. I also discuss a couple of different ways to shoot a slingshot. I also discuss differnt kinds of shot and why I choose to shoot clay ammunition. Most importantly I'll discuss a bit about why it's important to practice Insinctive Shooting. Thanks for watching. It's a bit off-topic but you've got to have some hobbies for SailboatLife! In this Captain's Vlog I updated the Electric Dinghy Motor with a Pistol Grip remote control, and a new ESC (Electronic Speed Control) This is a DIY SailboatLife Hack and I'm making steady progress. In the previous episode dedicated to the electric outboard motor I successfully powered the trolling motor with 2 Ryobi Hand-tool batteries. In this episode I successfully pair a RC Pistol Remote Controller with my Newport 24v 86lbs thrust Trolling motor... and it worked! Kinda-sorta worked... and then it didn't. Blew out the new speed controller so I didn't get very far. Anyone got any good leads on a decent ESC for a brushed 24v motor? The Fog was creeping in which changed my sailings plans. Managed to get the sails up in the turnaround and sailed down the channel towards Bodega Bay, but the Fog was creeping in and I decided to head back down the channel. I sailed all the way to my anchorage and managed to drop anchor without turning the motor on! Inflated the Dinghy at anchor and made a quick beer run to test my new battery and electric dinghy. 24 volts and 86lbs thrust, Baby! The next day I did a bit of scrubbing and then it was back to the marina where I almost FAILED the landing, but managed to stick it! The practice is paying off. The Sailing conditions were calm, but that didn't mean I couldn't get into trouble. In this Episode I practice the Sailings on my live-aboard 32' Ericson and experience an epic Docking Fail! Exiting the channel was easy enough with the help of Donkey Diesel. Once I got from behind Bodega Head's wind-shadow I could turn the motor off! The silence was spectacular! Speeds of 3.6 knots were achieved! I had a shouting match with the Seals that inhabit Bell Buoy, and I tacked back and forth with ease. Then I tried landing the damn boat back into it's slip at the Marina and chaos ensued. I'm suffering from approaching the dock too slowly, too cautiously. Once I engage forward throttle to actually reach the dock, Prop Walk takes over spinning the stern of Dagny away from the dock and towards the fishing boat to my starboard. Happy to report that no fishing boats were harmed in the making of this video. Yes, I failed spectacularly on my 1st try, but I didn't break anything, and stuck the 2nd landing attempt! We learn more from our failures, folks. In this lengthy Captain's Vlog I tackle Solo Docking. I've solo docked before (not a euphemism for mastribation) but I'm not very good at it, so I'm practicing. Here are Ten of my solo docking attempts with various degrees of success. Dagny is a 32 foot Ericson and can be very challenging to dock when you're alone. In the past I have simply floated aimlessly into the dock, jumped off at the last moment, and tied it off, however this does not work in stronger conditions. I received a youtube comment informing me that there was another way. This is a video of me parking a sailboat 10 times... are you listening youtube? In this Sailboat Life video, I sell my 2.3 hp honda outboard motor, and purchase a 24 volt, 86 lbs. thrust Trolling/Dinghy motor. But 1st! I must build a 24 volt battery system to run the bugger. I solder some xt60 connectors to some dc-dc converters to the battery hats, inside the plastic box, that will hopefully produce the 24 volts needs to push the Newport Trolling motor. It worked! Weeee. In this Adventure Vlog, I Anchor Out Overnight for the very 1st time. I am an Overnight Anchorage virgin, so a little timid and overly cautious ?? ?? To battle my timid nervous nature, I've rigged up an Anchor Marker - basically a rope tide to the Anchor with a float attached so that you can keep an eye on the position of your anchor. It's also very handy as a retrieval line if your anchor becomes snagged. Mission accomplished ? and my confidence has been boosted. Inflated the dingy and rowed to shore for a couple of beers ? Cooked a lovely meal. Slept like royalty. Shot my slingshot at passing seaweed and invented a new sport; Slingshot Seaweed Safari! In this Captain's Vlog I manage to get the sails up, or at least the headsail.
