In 2024, I sailed through the Strait of Messina from Italy and into the Aeolian Islands. In The Odyssey, Aeolus, the god of the winds, sealed the raging winds inside a bag. But while Odysseus was asleep, his crew opened it by mistake, unleashing the winds and blowing them all the way back to where they had started. My biggest regret from that trip was missing the chance to climb Stromboli at night , all because of a job interview that, at the time, seemed incredibly important. I’ve been thinking about going back ever since.

Only after revisiting Homer’s Odyssey and comparing its legendary route with my own did I realize that I had sailed past many places associated with the epic. The exact locations of the Sirens, the Cyclops and Calypso are still debated. But approaching these islands, cliffs and straits from the sea helped me understand why ancient sailors imagined monsters, gods and giants here.
