First update since I got back to the boat. Today aboard Osprey I'm walking through the boat showing where things stand as we push toward departure. A lot has been happening below decks. Both bilges have finally been cleaned properly after discovering how water from the engine bay actually splits across the internal frame and spreads into both side bilges. With everything flushed and reset, we’re installing a new bilge pump and bringing the system back into proper order. The grey water tank top is now fitted, which makes life on board a lot easier, and the mast boot is secured, reducing the water coming down the mast dramatically. On deck, I’m preparing to go up the mast today. The rig has been pumping more than it should, so we’re going to put a basic tune into the rig and start stabilising things properly. We also spotted something interesting on the backstay chainplate — the shackles were installed upside down. Those will be turned over and new lashings fitted to bring that connection back into proper order. So today’s jobs include: • Mast climb and initial rig tune • Correcting the backstay shackles and lashings • Finishing the bilge pump installation • Finalising the grey water system • Continuing preparations for departure One major job still ahead is dealing with the mainsail mast track, which is absolutely essential to get sorted before Osprey can properly head back to sea. Every step is part of bringing this Grand Mistral 80 maxi yacht back into full working order for the next stage of the voyage. --- The Mariner Podcast The Mariner Podcast explores offshore sailing, leadership, long voyages, and the realities of life at sea. This evening I’m taking a quiet wander along the docks in Cherbourg, getting a feel for the marina and the boats gathered here. It’s a fascinating mix — very different answers to the same core problem: how to go to sea, and how to live out there safely, comfortably, and well. Along the dock we look at a Hallberg-Rassy 49, a custom French offshore boat, and an aluminium high-latitude expedition yacht. Each reflects a distinct design philosophy, and it’s always revealing to see how those ideas translate into real boats, in the real world. I also talk about meeting the team from Garcia Yachts aboard Osprey. Their curiosity and enthusiasm was a genuine pleasure, and on Monday I’ll be visiting the yard to look more closely at their work — including the Garcia 60 they’ve kindly invited me to explore. I’ll report back as soon as I can. For now, this video is simply about settling in, observing, and enjoying the quiet pleasure of walking docks and talking boats — because there are few things better than messing about with boats. Support the Mariner If you’d like to support the production of this work, you can find me on Patreon. It blends offshore experience, lessons learned the hard way, interviews, anecdotes, and the inevitable tangents that come with life aboard boats. It’s for sailors of any experience level — from beginners to seasoned offshore hands — and it exists to share knowledge openly in a world where that knowledge is often fragmented or lost. 🎧 https://themariner.podbean.com/ The Mariner’s Library Podcast The Mariner’s Library is a serialized audio project where I read classic sailing books from the last century and beyond — written by sailors who learned their lessons at sea and took the time to write them down. These works explore seamanship, endurance, navigation, risk, and the mental and physical realities of ocean life — often set in places and eras that feel almost unreal today. No modern commentary layered on top — just the original words, read respectfully and released in serialized form. 🎧 https://themarinerslibrary.podbean.com/ #sailing #adventure #ocean #boating
Just after half past eleven at night, I brought Osprey solo into Cherbourg Inner Harbour. This move wasn’t rushed. I’d planned it carefully, spending hours on the dock beforehand, watching traffic patterns, weather windows, and how the harbour actually behaves at night. After a couple of days studying conditions, I shifted the boat from the outer waiting dock into the security of Cherbourg Inner Harbour—a place with a long history as a refuge on the Normandy coast. This year’s weather has been noticeably harsher than usual. I’ve had messages from subscribers reporting damage to boats all along the south coast of the UK, so being here isn’t just convenient, it’s appropriate. Berth One is an honour to be alongside—but doing it alone changes everything. Solo means slow, deliberate, and methodical. Every step has to be thought through. Every failure mode considered in advance. This footage is less about drama and more about process: planning, patience, and respecting the reality of moving a big boat without crew, late at night, in a working harbour. Sometimes the quiet decisions matter most. If sailing were a game, this is where it would begin. You’d start by naming your character. Selecting a language. And then you’d spawn alongside in a French coastal harbour — boat loaded with history, unfinished systems, hard choices, and a single objective: get ready to cross an ocean. In this video I’m alongside in Cherbourg, berth one, and it feels exactly like that moment. Today the “intro cutscene'. I talk through the real mechanics behind this campaign — the mainsail with five reefs, why its geometry matters, and how far the sail plan has already evolved. I touch on the Global Solo Challenge, the sacrifices that brought me here, and why getting to this point has been anything but straightforward. This isn’t theory or armchair sailing. It’s real-world problem solving: weather, systems, structure, money, fatigue, and decisions that actually matter. Cherbourg has opened up possibilities I didn’t expect, and suddenly the game board looks different. The character is loaded. Let’s begin play. In this video I take a detailed, respectful look at the loss of Lyle Babington and his vessel Molly in August of this year. Using the Marine Accident Investigation Branch reports and recommendations, we go step by step through the chain of events that led from a small defect to a catastrophic outcome. This is not finger-pointing. This is seamanship. As I reviewed the MAIB findings and spent time on Lyle’s own YouTube channel, what emerged was a man with enormous drive, imagination, and a genuine love of being afloat. He pushed himself. He built things. He chased horizons. His passing leaves a hole for his family, friends, and for the community who followed his adventures. My hope with this video is simple: that we can draw something meaningful from Mollie’s story — a legacy of practical vigilance, humility, and learning — that every one of us can carry forward at sea. If this helps even one sailor avoid a similar fate, then we honour him. --- Opportunities to Train & Sail with The Mariner If you’d like to deepen your seamanship, train hard, and experience high-performance offshore sailing, there are upcoming opportunities to join me on board: • RORC Caribbean 600 — February • Antigua Race Week — April/May • Newport–Bermuda Race — June Each event includes three days of intensive safety and seamanship training before the start.
