Our aft platform is finally getting the finishing touches and woodwork which is one of the items needed to get on the water! Because the Alwine II is so tall, it's nearly impossible to get in and out of the stern without the platform finished and assembled. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• We are Fred and Juh. Deciding what to use on our boat and what would best suit our needs for power control, batteries, etc. was not an easy task. We didn't find videos or clear information about the real difference, advantages, and disadvantages of PWM and MPPT solar controller systems for example. So after long research and decide the best for the Alwine II, Fred will tell you everything here in this video. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• We are Fred and Juh. In this episode, we will finish some works from the previous episode such as installing the kitchen porthole and the engine breather. But work is a little slower at the moment because Fred has injured his shoulder and is in physical therapy. We talked about this a little bit too. And as always the songs are happening and you will meet the home studio of our drummer Henrique Matos. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• We are Fred and Juh. Changing the cockpit portholes was a distant dream. In our cockpit, two round plastic portholes, cracked, stained, and old that leaked all the time, were our reality, and we searched nautical thrift stores but in the dimensions and shape, we needed nothing was ever found. New ones were too expensive so for a long time we believed that the way would be to make do with what we had. But by great luck of fate, we got an offer of what the Alwine II needed at an affordable price, and the result you can check out in this episode. We are Fred and Juh. Our love for Alwine II was at first sight. The boat is all made of wood including the masts. But time and abandonment left deep marks and we saw that the mizzen mast had a large rotten area, which would make the trip from Porto Alegre to Ubatuba impossible. Porto Alegre is more than 1,362 km away from Ubatuba, which made trips and more trips by car to prepare the boat for departure impossible. We had to make a plan to stay awhile and fix what was too damaged to withstand a terrible winter sea from the South to the Southeast. The option was to put in a temporary aluminum mast and take what was left of the wooden mizzen mast after removing the rotten piece in the hope of one day finding the right wood, the right carpenter, and rebuilding it. In this episode, you will find out if we made it or not :) Also in this episode, Fred finally finishes closing the stern diesel tank. We decided to change the manual systems of the toilets to the electric system, and since it couldn't be different in bathrooms... “sh%ts happens”. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• We are Fred and Juh. With rare exceptions, almost everything we imagine would be or is a quick work in the refurbishment actually become sagas. That 30-minute job? It's been a whole day. In this episode, in addition to the unexpected challenges, trying to find material or tools in the middle of Brazilian carnival can become an odyssey so Fred uses creativity to solve problems. Also, know what we call “Dumpster Shopping”. Unfortunately in Brazil everything is very expensive and trying to get equipment, parts, and material in the trash to reuse ends up being one of our options. Garbage + creativity can be very useful as you can see in this episode. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• We are Fred and Juh. Someone is trying to steal our videos. Unfortunately, it's true, someone is trying to steal our Youtube videos! We think it's important to share this with you and Fred explains what's going on so watch this episode to understand the drama. But as we are very resilient even with this news that devastated us, we continue to edit EP8 and we will show you the entire process of removing, cleaning, and installing the hatches and the special technique that Fred used to prevent the fixing points of screws on the deck over time, they show infiltration causing the biggest nightmare of all wooden boat owners: rotten wood on the deck. Yes, it can be avoided and Fred will show you. Another subject that always creates doubts is the valves and registers, which type to use. Fred after a lot of research discovered some interesting material but of course, he couldn't avoid becoming a real MythBuster and doing stress tests in the most absurd ways. We are Fred and Juh. True friendship is like this, together in the fun of sailing and participating in regattas and also together when the boat needs repairs or is being renovated. And so Rapha and Allyne entered the history of the renovation of the small Alwine I and the large Alwine II bringing all the know-how in renovations and installation of portholes and hatches that you can check out step by step in this episode. As Fred loves to dig holes, he didn't feel sorry for his friends' little “LeBaron” when he found osmosis at the bottom. For those who think that Fred is always this calm and smiling boy, we will show the Mr. Hyde side of him along with his helper Mr. Friday through the shipyard and his “Myth Buster” moment with the slow-motion test of the resistance difference between the acrylic and polycarbonate that we chose for the portholes. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• We are Fred and Juh.
