In January, Ben Harris made the decision to have an iron keel cast in a Cornish foundry for the John Alden-designed MALABAR IV schooner build. I interviewed a friend of ours, a naval architect, to discuss it. However, we scrapped the video as the whole keel casting decision evolved, and this video explains the current situation. The next film will include a visit from Rémi (who featured in EP01) and his friend, who also attends the French boatbuilding college in Brittany, Les Ateliers de l'Enfer. Ben's shaping the centreline or keel using a traditional tool-an Adze-which, as he describes, is one of, or possibly, the oldest tool used by mankind. With the Adze he's specifically shaping the rebate on the keel, called the 'rabbet', where the garboard plank will sit. Justin, the yard manager at Gweek Quay Classic Boatyard, gives insight into Ben Harris' daring project, pointing out the risks involved and the characteristics needed for success: "At the moment, wood is insanely expensive, so taking a risk with a lot of wood is not going to be done by many people at the moment, that's for sure.". FYI the schooner project is for sale, as previously mentioned in other episodes. Ben's website has more details on this, and the best way to contact him is through that website (link below). Next, in the coming days, another video will reveal Ben's plan with the keel casting. Ben Harris is forging ahead with the MALABAR IV build. Beautiful lengths of seasoned oak were transported from his secret stash in the woods, having been put aside for 'a schooner' for over a decade. He's seen laying patterns, made from lofting the boat's shape on the loft floor, onto the lengths of oak, picking the best shapes for the patterns before rough cutting out the frames with the chainsaw and planing them. The second part of the video shows Ben marking bevelling angles onto the rough timber frames as they begin to take shape. Jordan and Jacob, who work in the yard, help Ben use a bandsaw with a canting bed to cut the bevels in the frames. 0:16 Overview of oak timbers 0:50 Sourcing the timber 2:10 Laying out patterns / picking timber for frames 2:50 Ben explains the 'doubler' / joining two frames 3:04 Chainsawing / rough cutting frames 3:32 Planing the lengths of oak after rough cutting them out 3:41 Jacob (yard hand) introduces himself 5:03 Ben explains bevelling - marking on angles for the bevels in the frames 6:49 Q/A: Is Ben under pressure? 8:00 How to achieve a rolling bevel / canting the bed of the bandsaw 9:12 Planking in relation to the frame bevel explained with GA (general arrangement drawing) 9:40 Canting bed on the bandsaw in action 11:28 Insight from Jacob (part-time paid hand gaining fresh experience in boatbuilding) More videos coming - please subscribe! No ordinary fishing: Paul Winter, owner of the traditional Essex sailing smack MARIA (CK21), explains 'stowboating', a historical method of fishing in boats for 'sprats'. Sprattus sprattus, the Latin name for 'sprats', is a type of fish sometimes sold as whitebait and is part of the herring family (Clupeidae). In the Essex village of Brightlingsea, the 'spratting boom'-the heyday of fishing for sprats-in gaff-rigged, engineless smacks was from the early 1800s until the early part of the 19th Century. MARIA is an engineless Essex smack built in 1866 by Harris Brothers in Rowhedge (UK). She's seen in this video being 'pushed' along by her smack's boat (a tender) in a slightly hurried attempt to try and 'stowboat' - fish - on the last of the flood tide. Later in this trip, as an ESE wind filled in, they repositioned the smack to a better position to use the ebb tide, around Colne Point, at the entrance to the River Colne in the Blackwater Estuary. Maria's owner, Paul Winter, re-enacts this type of fishing to honour her original design and purpose. She's kept beautifully and sailed so well, she's probably in my top five boats of all time! Big thanks to Paul Winter for a great day out again, thanks to Dave Quested for tender driving :-). If you like this video please subscribe to our YouTube channel! Boatbuilder Ben Harris is seen here making the keel casting mold, intending to cast an iron keel in accordance with yacht designer John Alden's original MALABAR IV plans. We thought this would be interesting to see before moving on to the start of the framing process (video coming soon). Between then and now, there's been a lot of consideration as to whether this is the best option for the build. Would you take a purist approach and honour the original design or home-cast a lead keel? Videos coming soon will cover framing, the decision on a keel casting material, preparation for casting, talking to a naval architect for an overview of MALABAR IV's design. PROJECT INFO: In December 2024, traditional boat builder Ben Harris announced his most daring project yet - building a John Alden-designed schooner. A few weeks ago, in December 2024, traditional boat builder Ben Harris announced his most daring project yet - building a John Alden-designed schooner. Watch Ben present to Classic Yacht TV his lifelong aspiration to complete 'MALABAR IV' and have the yacht race-ready for the 2027 Fastnet Race when he hopes to race neck and neck against TALLY HO! This video illustrates the first part of the boat-building process, 'lofting,' undertaken just before Christmas 2024. Watch Ben working alongside Rémi Guillet, who joined him for work experience from Les Ateliers de l'Enfer, a traditional maritime and boatbuilding training school in Brittany, France. Rémi provides insight into working with Ben, and together, they bring form to the numbers from John Alden's 'offset table' by drawing them out on the loft floor ready for patterning frames. If you like this video please subscribe to our YouTube channel for unique and exclusive classic boat videos **Contact Classic Yacht TV for exposure and advertising on this channel** Ben explains why MALABAR IV is his favourite out of the legendary 'Malabar series' penned by American yacht designer John G Alden between 1921 and 1945. Dissecting the schooner rig and a potential sail wardrobe, Ben talks about the ability to reduce sail in the interest of seamanship. He discusses his approach to financing this exciting project and issues 'a call to arms' for people interested in traditional boatbuilding to join him in Gweek, Cornwall (UK). Watch the 'hatching' of two duckling dinghies acquired for David and Kristi Aisher's daughters, Sophie and Penny. A short naming and christening ceremony took place on 9th April 2016 at the well-known (and very classic) Elephant Boatyard near the Hamble (UK). Sophie and Penny respectively named their boats, SWALLOW and AMAZON with a splash of Prosecco. In a fluky breeze, David and Sophie launched and sailed 'Amazon' while Kristi and Penny sailed away from the slipway in 'Swallow'. The 9ft Duckling dinghy was designed by renowned yacht designer and sailor Uffa Fox, they were produced in mass by Fairey Marine, on the Hamble in the 1960's. Using the hot-moulded double diagonal technique, a construction method very characteristic of Fairey Marine, they're strong and versatile, featuring a mahogany capping rail and sculling notch in the transom. These two Ducklings join a very impressive lineage of yachts in the Aisher family. They have hatched into, possibly, one of Britain's greatest sailing families - the Aishers - famous for their offshore sailing successes, very closely attached to the Royal Ocean Racing Club; through several generations, they commissioned the build(s) and campaigned the 'Yeoman's from the 1930's onwards. David's grandfather, Sir Owen Aisher, was the Admiral of the Royal Ocean Racing Club and commissioned a succession of world-class yachting campaigns. These two lucky duckling dinghies will join David and Kristi, Sophie and Penny as they cruise on board their gaff cutter yacht, THALIA.

HUFF OF ARKLOW's fin and skeg underwater profile configuration was received as a sensational yacht design in the early 1950s, especially upon her initial launch in the quaint and agricultural Irish town of Arklow, 70km south of Dublin, Ireland. The other major feature that makes her a perplexing sight is the stepped shear. This exceeds a foot's difference between her deck and the lower, aft deck and cockpit. In post-war Ireland in the early 1950s, the boat builders at Jack Tyrrell's yard in Arklow must have thought they were part of an experiment building such a boat. In 2014 she was awarded Heritage Lottery Funding in order for Cremyll Keelboats to restore her at Mashford's boat yard, Torpoint - Cornwall. Before this came to completion, in August 2014, Classic Yacht TV caught some of the stages of her restoration on camera and in a separate visit, went sailing on board. This is film first published on Classic Yacht TV in 2014. Please excuse the quality - it is an old piece of work created to support Dominic and Barbara Bridgman restore and charter HUFF OF ARKLOW. http://www.classicyacht.tv/
