There was not a lot of room on the start line with both the IRC 0 and IRC 1 starting together for the final offshore race of Cork Week 2024. The J109 Going to Red tacked on to starboard in a whole before spending the last 40 seconds fending off two Cape 31's who were hell bend on spearing her with there super long bowsprits. We boats racked up three or four deep both to windward and leeward it was a challenge to balance hight with speed to keep your lane. The skipper on Going to Red owned the start as they creep over the boats to leeward while squeezing out everyone on there hit. We hope you enjoyed this keep of one of the Bottom Up Boats Crew most memorable moments of the 2024 racing season.
It was tight racing for the start of race 4 of Volvo Cork Week 2024, with the pin end favoured and and a pressure header out on the left edge of the course the pin end of the line and the left of the beat was the place to be. The Redline racing team approach the rest of the fleet on port tack with just over a minute to go before the start. After going head to head with a Beneteau First 35 the J109 GTR put in a tight gybe to line up to leeward of the fleet. With less than 30 seconds to go it was not a time on distant challenge to hit the ping and with as much speed as possible. The team on GTR were slightly early and had to burn off some speed which gave the boats on their hip the chance to roll over the top. Smooth steering and quality mainsheet control allowed GTR to close the gap on the boats to windward. About a minute and twenty seconds into the race and with the help of a 5 degree header GTR pulled off the leebow and raced away to lead at the first mark. The team at bottom up boats hope you are enjoying the short clips from the 2024 racing season, it will not be long until we have some 2025 footage to share with you.
With over 100 boats on the starting line of the Harbour Race there was plenty of ducking and diving to get some clear air. The Redline Racing Team tacked back onto Starboard a little earlier than they should have which left them short of the line. It was next to impossible to accelerate and keep hight on the line which result in the J109 Going to Red starting in Row 3. With the tide racing in it was always going to be favoured to tack onto port and hit the shore to shelter from the tide. It took about a minute and half to find a lane out to the right. After a quick tack and ducking a couple of boats the crew settled in for one of the most memorable races in our time in Cork. The team at Bottom Up Boats hope your are enjoying these short bits from our 2024 racing season.
It was tight racing for the start of race three of Volvo Cork Week 2024, a couple of the other J109's in the IRC 1 fleet through the rule book out the window, firstly not keeping clear while on port and then compounding the rule breaks by not keeping clear as the windward boat. It was frustrating for us as they had no intention of keeping clear and it put us in a awful position 3 deep at the pin and without speed, which forced us to take behind the rest of the fleet as they headed out to the favoured side of the course. The team on Joker sailed away, raising the yellow flag to accept a 1% race time penalty. Every day is a school day on the race course, what I learnt form this one is it is better to break the rules at the start to get in the front row and accept the 1% penalty. In an hour long race it is better to get a good first work position as the 1% is nothing compared to being buried at the start. It also highlighted how small the 1% time penalty is when compared to the tradition 720 degree turn which would have been used in the past. The team at bottom up boats hope you are enjoying the short clips from the 2024 racing season.

During the first race of the Season Ending Frosties regetta the team on the J109 GTR had a reef in the main and the A3 kite up and were blasting across the bottom reach. The pressure on the tack line proved to be too much as it busted through the outer core which results in the tack line sliding up are 6 or 7 meters before the core bunched up and locked in place. With the shoring approaching fast the crew got the jib up and cut the tack line to allow them to drop the kite and two sail reach off to the bottom mark. It was calm crew working under pressure and allowed the team to keep the lead and sail on to victory. We hopw you are enjoying the short clips from the 2024 racing season.
East Down Yacht club turned on a beautiful late summer day for the annual trip down the coast to Ardglass. The redline racing team on J109 GTR were joined by around 20 other boats to tackle the race out of Strangford Lough and down the coast to the fishing village of Ardglass. With sun shinning and the breeze building to around 10 to 15 knots it was going to be a bumpy passage over the strangford lough bar with wind and tide running in opposite directions. Condition at the bar mouth were about as bumpy as I have seen them, the J109 Going to Red powered through the waves which were at times breaking over the bow of the boat. With the crew on the rail keeping us flat and big Jack powering the main we lead the fleet out of the narrows and never looked back. The J109 yacht showed what a solid offshore racer she is as she powered through short and sharp and often confused seaway that made for a memorable race out of the Strangford Lough Narrows. The Redline Racing team on J109 Going to Red was mixing it with the big boys in the IRC Zero fleet for the final Coastal race of Cork Week 2024. With a bias to the boat end of the starting line there was a pack of boats all trying to get as close to the boat end of the line as possible. The J109 Going to Red managed to roll over the top of one of the Cape 31's before accelerating and grinding up to leebow a second of the Cape 31 fleet. It was a good start for team GTR, managing to get some clear air and good speed when the gun went, it could have been even better if they accelerated a little earlier which would have put then right on the line when the gun went. The team at bottom up boats hope you end enjoyed stepping onboard to be a skipper for a couple of minutes during Cork Week 2024.

It is always a sad day when the boat comes out of the water for the season. We could not have asked for a better day with the sun shinning and a gentle breeze which made for a smooth lift out as GTR was put on the hard for another winter.
The first week of the Season Ending Frosties Regatta got of the wild and windy start with a sold 18 to 20 knots with gust up to 25. The redline racing team on J109 GTR were pushing this hard along the bottom reach when the outer core on the tack line gave way sending the kite shooting into the are. Some quick thinking and calm heads under pressure allowed the team to recover from a dangerous situation by cutting the locked tackline free. You should always have a couple of knives hand for emergencies, without it we would have had a troublesome time getting the kite down. If you don't carry one we suggest you pick a couple up using the product link below, titanium is always a great option if you are racing in salt water.
