SailLAB is a new initiative that brings the sport of sailing into the classroom through a teacher-designed STEM education program aligned with the Australian Curriculum.
We recently spoke with Marnie Irving from Royal Brighton Yacht Club about her experience volunteering and the important role volunteers play in supporting sailing communities
Niesje has held the position of Commodore at Royal Brighton Yacht Club for the past year, following nine years on the General Committee. She has also been Secretary of the Etchells Melbourne Fleet for the past 12 years and National Secretary of the International Etchells Class Association of Australia for four years, including involvement with several international committees.
Sailing Summits provide a great opportunity for clubs and classes to share information and ideas and to learn the latest from Australian Sailing on new initiatives, resources, and projects. A fleet of five teams representing the Australian Defence community and veteran sailors took to Sydney Harbour this ANZAC Day Eve, renewing a powerful tradition of competition, camaraderie and remembrance at the second annual ANZAC Day Cup. Hosted once again by the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, the 2026 regatta brought together teams representing the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force, with two new teams from the Australian Defence Force Academy and the Saltwater Veterans racing in a spirit that honoured service while showcasing high-level sailing. Each team was also joined by a member of the Australian Sailing Futures program, deepening the connection between the athletes and the Defence Personnel with shared stories, tactics and “friendly” advice being shared across the fleet.
⚖️ The lineup included Stacey Jackson (fresh off the Famous Project Jules Verne record), Jessica Sweeney from the Bureau of Meteorology, Mandy Buchholtz speaking about the recent Sail Our Way event at Cairn Curran Sailing Club, Dr Doortje Hoerst on her research into women’s experiences in social yacht racing, and Tash Bryant, strategist with the Bonds Flying Roos, following the third event of the 2026 SailGP season in Sydney. Hosted by Nic Douglass, SheSails Ambassador, with introductions from Australian Sailing President Shevaun Bruland, and Sue Phillips, Participation Coordinator. Livestream took place on 5 March 7pm AEDT, celebrating International Women’s Day 2026.

The SheSails International Conference 2025, part of the World Sailing Steering the Course Festival for Women, took place on Monday 20 October at 7:00 pm (AEDT).
