WE SAILED HERE - TOBAGO CAYS After weeks of hard work in a Trinidad boatyard, we sailed north through the Grenadines to pick up Declan and Ivan in St Vincent, then back tracked to the breathtaking, impossibly blue Tobago Cays, a tiny archipelago in the Southern Grenadines famous for it's crystal clear turquoise water, coral reefs and sea turtles. SHIPWRECKS, BOAT WORK & LIFE LESSONS IN TRINIDAD BOATYARD This week we're experiencing the reality of boatyard life in Trinidad while finishing our haul-out, repairing systems, and discovering the unexpected kindness that makes the sailing community so special. While working against the clock to finish jobs on the boat, we're also reminded just how fragile plans can be when we see the aftermath of hurricane damage and hear the stories of others who have lost so much. IS THIS SABOTAGE? | TRINIDAD HAUL OUT MYSTERY Sand in our sail drive oil wasn't something we expected to find during a routine haul out in Trinidad. So how did it get there... and could it be sabotage? This week we haul out in Chaguaramas, Trinidad, one of the most popular and cost effective Caribbean boatyard destinations, especially for cruisers staying south of the hurricane belt. This week we're sailing from Grenada to Trinidad in the south Caribbean. A passage that takes us close to the coast of Venezuela, just a few miles across the water. This voyage isn't so much about open ocean miles or new anchorages, it's about transition. and letting go. Our sons, Declan and Ivan, are about to embark on their own journey, flying out of Trinidad to crew a super yacht delivery from Rhode Island to Antigua, stepping into the next chapter of their lives and careers. We've been incredibly fortunate to live, work and sail alongside them for so long, more than lucky, really. And while we're sad to see them go, we're overwhelmingly proud of the young men they've become. That's live aboard life for you. Between boat jobs and real-life sailing challenges, we walk through Grenada's national park with fellow sailors who share why they chose to go sailing while they're still young. This is a reminder of why we went sailing, what life aboard a sailboat is really like, and why waiting for the 'perfect time' isn't always the answer. Sailing isn't just sunsets and anchorages - it's boat work, uncertainty, loss, laughter, and perspective. Our sail takes us past Suriname, Guyana, the coast of Venezuela and the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. A stretch of water presently involved in some intense American military activity. Unfortunately there is no way to avoid the Venezuela coastline, however, to reduce risk we stay well offshore, away from coastal fishing boats and geopolitics. But even far from land, the ocean has ways of throwing curveballs. We witness a strange interaction between a freighter and an unidentified boat. Are they up to no good? We don't know. Is their behaviour suspicious? Absolutely. Devil's Island was France's brutal offshore penal colony, For a hundred years, between 1853 and 1853, it was one of the most feared places on earth, where prisoners were shipped to join the colony of the damned. The harsh tropical conditions led to a terrifying mortality rate, where 75% of inmates died. Today, the abandoned, crumbling buildings are returning to nature, a silent reminder of their savage past. This week's episode is the true story of how our friends, a sailing family aboard 'Arco Iris' became shipwrecked on the remote island of Ilha dos Lençois, just a day after we had successfully navigated the same river system. They lost their home, their boat and nearly everything they owned. Showing remarkable resilience they managed to escape the island of Lençois aboard an open top catamaran by bartering what they could salvage from the wreck. The Catamaran delivered them, soaked and salty, to the mainland, where they exchanged their $25 000 salvaged water maker, for a 500 mile ride in the back of a ute to reach the safety of our floating home in Belem. It's a place of extraordinary beauty, rich culture and warm people, but also a region forever linked to a tragic moment in sailing history. In this episode we reflect on the legacy of Sir Peter Blake, the world famous New Zealander who was killed near the mouth of the Amazon in 2001. His story has shaped how many cruisers think about this part of Brazil, and it's impossible not to feel his presence as we navigate these same waters. But the Amazon Delta is far more than its darkest chapter. What began as quiet days of work, turned into one of the most unsettling moments we've experienced while sailing. In broad daylight one morning, a neighbouring yacht in our anchorage was boarded at gunpoint by men arriving in a fishing boat. They demanded drugs and struck the sailor over the head, before fleeing empty handed, a stark reminder of how quickly paradise can turn. This episode follows our journey from Fortaleza to Lencois, a challenging stretch of Brazil's north coast, where relentless east to west currents and shallow seas test both us and our boat. With our autopilot "Bob' out of action, it's three nights and two days of hand steering before we find sanctuary in a remote fishing village.
