Darwin to Brisbane by road is roughly 3500km. We have 9 days to complete the trip in our Toyota Hilux, taking as many little detours as we can find along the way. What would you do. Stay with the boat or get the hell out of it? It was a stressful few days as first we had to move the boat from the mooring we were on and organise to get into a marina. The locals had all said "cyclones in November/December?? no way!) Getting into a marina up here involves having your underwater areas checked and treated for unwanted species of shellfish. This involves staying on a pontoon for 10 hours while not using any thru-hulls, engine etc. The we had to organise insurance after being without any in Indonesia. We finally got into the marina and made the call to leave. We'd booked this road trip to Brisbane a while before and there were penalties involved if we didnt deliver the vehicle in time. Sailing to Darwin, finally! We've been waiting for this for a while now. Dont get me wrong, we've really enjoyed our last few months exploring the Papuan coast and all its wonderful hidden treasures. It is truly a gem and so surprising to us the with its near proximity to Australia its not visited by more cruisers. We had decided 6 months before that we'd had enough of Indonesia and would sail to Darwin and discovered that its pretty hard to enjoy today while yearning for tomorrow. The passage from Saumlaki south to Darwin is only around 350nm and we covered that in 44hrs. One of our most relaxed passages really. Enjoy. Leaving our boat tied up between two trees we journeyed by tender an hour up narrow forest channels then walked for an hour through pristine forest up to Badi Gaki, a very remote bird watching lodge. What an amazing experience we had! Getting lifted up 30m into the canopy to birds hides and observing these wonderful birds from very close quarters was something neither of us have ever experienced. We love sailing to remote places and this week we visit one of the least visited places in Indonesia. The Aru Islands lie just off the west coast of Papua, in a forgotten corner of the country. A few years ago I read a book called "The Malay Archipelago" by Alfred Wallace. He spent many years during the 1800's exploring remote places in this part of the of the world and discovered many many new species of animal. He spent a good deal of time in the Aru Islands and it fascinated me and I'd always wished to visit. Well, now was our chance! We collided with yet another log! This is the 4th one in 12 months and I'm over it! Fortunately this collision was not too bad and we only suffered minimal damage to the rudder and were able to continue on or way. I will repair the rudder at a later date. After that we had a pretty relaxing sail and anchored at an amazingly beautiful island. It's not often that you get an island all to yourself in Indonesia and we really enjoyed the peace and quiet. Later a boat full of locals came past and told us this particular island was sacred and thought to be possessed by devil spirits and that we shouldn't go ashore under any circumstances! Wow ok. A few days later, sailing to a new island our Jib started to break apart. I've sort of been waiting for it too happen so wasn't too surprised when it blew apart. Now we are in need of an expensive new sail! Sailing 120nm hard upwind was always going to be a challenge. Sailing Misool you can find some amazing secrets to uncover so long as you are willing to explore. Zipping around the thousands of little islets we found some really amazing caves. Mostly unmarked, these caves showed themselves with some stalactites in the entry. Some of them were overgrown at the entry but we bush-bashed our way in and explored. Marie is not a huge fan of being deep underground but stuck with it and also saw some of the best stuff. Eli had no issues with the dark and tight places. Misool is truly a very special place. Boat yards scare the hell out of me, I'll be honest. It's never a nice time when that moment comes when you need to haul out and get some hull work done. Sailing through the Kabui Passage is a bit nerve wracking as it's super narrow, has big sharp cliffs on either side and the current can run either way up to 5 knots. It is a big shortcut and it is a very beautiful river-like cruise if you have the courage. On the other side we are rewarded with a fresh water spring gushing out the side of a mountain through a beautiful cave. As we dont have a water maker we filled up our 400l tanks with this pure spring water.
