Some places are hard to leave. The last days we spent in the Bahamas brought daily lightning storms, curious dolphins, and a few final dives before turning Dark Angel toward the Dominican Republic. After settling into Great Inagua, we expected a quiet reset. Instead, we found ourselves pushed off a reef by the most aggressive Great Barracuda we’ve ever encountered. After twenty-seven exhausting hours at sea, Great Inagua was finally within reach. But about two miles from shore, wind, waves, and current stopped us cold. With a struggling engine and diesel reserves lower than we liked, we spent four more hours working for every inch, still offshore. When the storms stack up and the water gets skinny, every decision matters. We finally get a full day of calm seas and fair winds after the rough stretch, and the dolphins at Kidd's Cove make it feel like Elizabeth Harbour is saying welcome back. We sail south from Big Majors, the new autohelm humming as we test the radar over open water, stopping for provisions along the way. Rudder Cut Cay gives us gliding rays and a glowing sunset, then Adderley Cut is quiet with no dolphins this time. We drop anchor at Lee Stocking Island, the usually crowded spot completely empty in the off-season, and memories of full anchorages and open shores come flooding back. Paddleboarding past limestone caves and coral heads in water so clear every fish shows up. Then a sweet nurse shark circles the boat looking for attention, before we climb the mast for the new radar dome and fire up the chart plotter to see if it works. Dark Angel can finally sail again thanks to a generous friend, and apparently we now have an attention-seeking shark who expects pets on demand. Then I’m underwater in a bikini trying to patch our damaged keel as we keep chasing progress one fix at a time In this episode of Sailing Dark Angel, after months without a headsail, we finally rig the beautiful jib/genoa donated by our friend and fellow cruiser and turn Dark Angel into a proper sailboat again. Then a very friendly shark insists on pets from the sugar scoops. And thanks to another generous cruiser who handed us some seriously pricey Splash Zone epoxy, I slip into my work bikini and try to patch our damaged keel. ⚠️ Lightning Strike Update We were directly struck by lightning. Navigation systems, running lights, anchor lights, work lights, a large freezer, and even our keel were damaged. We're still facing VAT, duty, exchange rates, customs brokerage, and a costly haul-out for keel repairs in the Dominican Republic. The deeper we dig, the worse it gets. Old, scorched, and abandoned wires everywhere. But the payoff is finally in sight. A Victron Multiplus means real power again on Dark Angel. Survival mode looks a little different at anchor. With the inverter gone, we start rethinking how to power life aboard Dark Angel. In this episode of Sailing Dark Angel, still at Staniel Cay, we pull out our lightning-damaged Magnum inverter and see what’s left of it. After a quick swim in the clear blue water, we get to work wiring our 100-litre Dometic freezer directly to the batteries for DC power, so we can finally give the generator a break and enjoy a little quiet aboard. ⚠️ Lightning Strike Update We were directly struck by lightning. Navigation systems, running lights, anchor lights, work lights, a large freezer, and even our keel were damaged. We're still facing VAT, duty, exchange rates, customs brokerage, and a costly haul-out for keel repairs in the Dominican Republic. Current items still needing repair/replacement include our Isotherm freezer in the saloon, our AIS and keel repairs. Also, our newly replaced wind instruments aren't working.
