In this continuation episode work progresses in the shipyard and we splash Saoirse back in the water to head out to Thailand. The bottom paint patching is completed, though the area under the stands was a little rushed and there were some delays. Jeannine replaced the joker valves on all four of the marine toilets, to fix an issue of backflow from the drain line. We replaced the motor on one of our 3-speed Harken winches. And we are joined by Scott (Youtube @thesailingbeard) for our splash and next steps! Goodbye Malaysia! Thanks for following! This is part 1 of 2 episodes in the shipyard. So if you like to see boat projects, this one's for you. Work includes: - inspecting the Coppercoat and starting the sanding, patching, and painting work to get rid of the bubbles that had been bothering us since we've been on the boat; - replacing the built-in swim ladder, that was allowing rusty water to enter the engine room; - starting work on the underwater light circuit in the swim platform; - topside crack filling / painting; - service to the Gori folding propellors; - sail drive oil changes; - cleaning hard-to reach areas to collect metallic debris that was causing rust streaks on the hull; - marking the anchor rode/chain. In this episode we're back in Langkawi Malaysia and getting ready for a period in the shipyard. This episode has some touring of the island, as well as some projects. Projects include: - Troubleshooting our main electric 3-speed which, which stopped working fully; - Using Deutsch connectors for electrical for the first time; - Integrating a dimmer / variable resistor knob into the Jon Buoy deployment button; - Wiring relays to allow dimming of the centerboard position indicating buttons. Then, joined by our friends from SV Aventure, we take a day to explore the sky bridge and gondola to head up the mountain. Lastly, it's haul-out time, and Saoirse gets lifted out of the water for the first time since she was splashed brand new! Thanks for following! After touring a bit of the island of Penang last week, we now have a bumpy passage north to Langkawi, where we prepare the boat for us to spend some time away. The rest of this episode is a bit of a departure from the typical sailing content and covers our vacation back to Canada during October-November. Due to flight scheduling, we have to overnight in Singapore, and we decide to take the opportunity to tour Singapore's famed Changi International Airport, primarily the area known as the Jewel. The Jewel has an amazing architecture and ambiance, including a tall indoor waterfall, greenery, and food, and a movie theatre. On return to Canada, starting in Ontario, we visit a conservation area, seeing some interactive wildlife, do some outdoor jobs with Kevin's family, and enjoy a Canadian Thanksgiving gathering. Then in New Brunswick there's more work to do including roof upgrades, volunteering at the ski chalet, making pies, fixing and replacing a door, and picking some Beattie Potatoes. In this episode Saoirse departs Port Dickson Malaysia, stopping in Penang after a rough night of sailing with strong winds and lumpy seas. Parking at the Admiralty Marina in Penang, exploration begins with a tour of Fort Cornwallis, the historic base of the East India Trading Company. Then, we hike up Penang Hill and through the biosphere reserve at the top. Penang is known for their diversity of delicious food, and we find several great food courts with amazing variety and great prices. Next week, once the weather calms a bit, we'll continue to Langkawi, and take some time away from the boat, with a visit back to Canada. Thanks for following! Our northbound passage-making continues this week. After getting Saoirse's life raft and crew overboard recovery module inspected and serviced, we departed Singapore and headed north in the Malacca Strait to check in to Malaysia at Port Dickson. From there, we took a couple of nights away from the boat to tour the big city of Kuala Lumpur. Kevin lived here for a couple of years in his youth, so we take a short trip to his old houses, then enjoy a great food tour. KL is a foodie's dream destination, with amazing foods from all over Asia. If you hunger easily when watching food on TV, maybe grab yourself a snack before sitting down for this one! In this episode Saoirse makes a passage from Lombok Indonesia, to Singapore, with a stop in Belitung to clear out of Indonesia. We are three aboard on this trip: Kevin, Jeannine, and Steve. The weather was mixed, between gale-force gusts of over 37 knots and lumpy seas, to calm winds and flat seas. Dodging fishing boats, cargo ships in the Singapore Strait, and communicating with the authorities in the Singapore reporting areas. Oh, and some snorkeling! If you like to see different types of urchins, this is the place for you! Thanks for following! In this episode, with guests aboard we tour the area of Gili Asahan, Gili Gede, and Lombok itself. This includes a demonstration of how the iconic Indonesian Rendang sauce is made. They use all fresh ingredients, including making their own coconut milk. It was really interesting knowing about the differences between the little chili peppers. Later in the week, the vacation moved off the boat to the Selong Selo resort overlooking Selong Belanak beach, where we rented a large surfboard and tried to catch a few tiny waves. Unsuccessfully. While surfing, we had a break-in to our villa. Watch to find out "whodunnit"! Thanks for following! In this episode Saoirse has Steve and Keith aboard, for "surf week". We fuel up with jerricans, then do a lap around the island of Lombok, hitting some of the local waves on western Sumbawa and southern Lombok. Points of interest include: Scar Reef, Yo-Yo's, Ekas Bay (not pictured), Belongas Bay, and then back to Gili Asahan to stage for Desert Point break. We end up saving a surfer after dark on Scar Reef after we heard him calling out for help. He had lost his board on the break, and was getting pulled out to sea. We were glad to be in a position where we could assist. On the maintenance side, we create some drainage holes to allow water to escape from the flybridge roof, as there is some unknown ingress point. First step, drain what's there...then we'll start working to find and seal the source. Thanks for following! In this episode we mix boat projects with some social time. Bouncing between the southern "Secret Gili Islands" of Gili Asahan and Gili Gede, as well as the more northern Gili island of Gili Air, we get to hang out with other fun cruisers including Don and Wally on Koro Vita, the crew of Viento del Mar, the Youtubers Sailing Ripple Effect on their boat Sailing Seabattical, Hank, and more. Ripple Effect organized a social gathering they call a Floatchella, inspired by the Coachella music festival. Unfortunately the plan of doing a large raft-up was thwarted by strong gusty winds in the anchorage area, so it ended up being a marina pool party instead. We also do a bit of snorkeling, scuba, skurfing/wakeboarding, and get to try a surfski kayak. And exploring southwest Lombok by scooter. Gili Air has no motorized vehicles, so horse-drawn buggies and bicycles are common. Boat projects include: - in-water changing of sail drive collar anodes (zincs); - rewiring an air conditioner blower unit to make the fan speeds work properly; - inspecting and re-hoisting the jib-sail, which had been sent out for a repair. In this episode Jeannine and Kevin do a 3-day hike up Mount Rinjani, a volcanic crater and the second-highest peak in Indonesia. Day 1 involves a brief medical exam, then hiking all day up to the crater rim, above the clouds. At 2am on Day 2, hikers can continue to the peak for sunrise, though the going is tough with loose sandy scree soil that makes ascending inefficient. Kevin had an old injury plaguing him during day 1, so chose not to do the sunrise summit push. Following the summit push, the hike continued down into the volcanic crater, where a lake and hot spring provided a good spot to break for lunch. Then back again up the mountain to the other side of the crater rim. Day three was a descent through beautiful forested trails down to another access point. Lessons learned: After spending most of our time living on a boat, not hiking or even walking much, this was a big 'step up' for our bodies. If doing something like this again in the future, we need to train more. Jeannine: says the summit hike at 2am wasn't worth it. The views were similarly amazing near the crater campsite, and would avoid the crazy exhaustion of the early morning hike. Now that we've stopped moving for a while, we found ourselves a good mooring at Gili Asahan and started to work on some boat projects. This episode is mostly boat work, with a bit of good diving in between. Jobs include: - Replacing door sweep strips in the salon sliding door. Metal sliders had been used, and due to their exposure zone we're replacing them with plastic ones. This job took a whole week! - Replacing the proximity sensor for the lift platform; - Inspecting a troublesome oil pressure sensor on the Yamaha outboard motor; - Replacing a turning block on the line that drives the swim platform....it exploded! - Programming in our CZone network to create a Night Navigation mode in which button lights at the flybridge are dimmed to preserve night vision. This episode covers a side quest away from Saoirse. Kevin and Jeannine head to Raja Ampat in the coral triangle, for a week of diving and exploration away from the boat. This area has lots to explore above and below the water. Unfortunately we don't have a lot of underwater media to show you because we made the mistake of exceeding the max depth of the action cameras, and they stopped working. But we did a boat tour of a mangrove lagoon/lake, we got pictures of the elusive red bird of paradise, and even some shots of tassled wobbegong sharks...Kevin's new favourite shark. And we both celebrated our birthdays at a quaint seaside resort. Thanks for following! Music downloaded at https://filter.one and Youtube music Video edited by Jea, using Adobe Premiere Elements. Here's a quick video of one of our maintenance projects while the boat is out of the water. We had been told in the past that this is not a job you want to tackle while in the water - and boy, were they right! I couldn't find a how-to video or any visual instructions on how to do this, so hopefully this video will be useful to other sailors. Removing them with a flat head screw driver is fairly easy. Inserting the new ones is tough, and took some trying before finding a technique that worked without getting fingers mangled. If you have a sewing palm handy, or any hard surface you can fit in the palm of your hand without slipping, this job becomes very doable. Enjoy!

In this video the Saoirse crew pick up guests for a family-style tour of Komodo National Park. Starting in Labuan Bajo, we head to Rinca Island to visit the dragons (see previous timeline video for more about the Komodo Dragons), and conduct a scuba dive. Then on to the area of Padar Island. At this spot there's a small island next-door with a great little beach and fantastic snorkeling. Padar Island itself boast a popular hike with 850 steps. The view from the top is actually the same as pictured on the Indonesian 50,000 Rupiah bank note! There's lots of wildlife in the park. Things we saw included eagles, wild boar, deer, dragons, geckos, herons and other birds, and.... Manta Rays! A great stop-off by Makassar Reef was Manta Point, where the groups snorkeled and swam with reef mantas that were congregating at a cleaning station, where they gather for the little fish to give them a sort of spa treatment. Thanks for watching and following. Don't forget to give us a thumbs up and subscribe! Eventually it will help to offset some of our overhead for creating this channel!
