We have had Lizard Island on our bucket list for a while but living on a boat means there are always reasons why you can't make it. However, we did finally get there and the sailing was superb. Once on the island we decided to follow in Captain Cooks footsteps and hike to the look out point at the top . We did it for the exercise but they would have done it to figure out how to navigate and get out of the reef system. As we sail along we realise how tricky it is navigating in these waters. Reefs pop out from nowhere so you have to keep a good lookout at all times. We sail to the most Northern point in Australia and arrive in Hook Island and then the next day cross to Thursday Island where we check out of Australia. Our last anchorage in Vanuatu has to be one of our most favourites ever because we had a great holding, incredible clear water to see the coral reef , plenty of boat kids to hang out with and a nice venue for the parents...what more could you ask for ? ...and even Woody's dream came true as he got to do some boat maintenance and put the bow thruster prop back on ! We sail to Lady Musgrave Island and navigate into the narrow passage to reach the lagoon. It is fascinating to walk around the island and find out about the birds that migrate here. We spot turtles in the water and recognise its importance as a turtle nesting site. When we leave the lagoon and head to the Great Keppel Islands, the weather does not look too good so we are expecting squalls and storms through the night. We sail up the East coast of Australia , stopping at some iconic places like Percy Yacht Club to leave our mark. A warning about sharks in the water at Sawmill Bay in the Whitsundays means we decide to climb the peak rather than go swimming, even though it is pouring with rain. On our way to Cairns, the wind dies so we stop at a random anchorage to rest and enjoy the sunset but this time we really do spot a shark at the waters edge so we have to work out how to get back in our dinghy and to our boat without becoming prey to this potentially hangry shark! We explore more things in Tasmania, outside of Hobart such as the Hastings Caves, Maria Island and a good 17km trek to Cape Raoul. There is so much to see but Maria Island had to be one of our favourites, the history, wombats, Tasmanian Pademelons, Fossil Cliffs and Painted Caves. The views at Cape Raoul were epic, especially of the Dolerite Rocks directed down to the dramatic ocean below. We have 10 days in Tasmania and we are going to see as much as we can. We visit the Botanical Gardens, Mawson's Huts Replica Museum, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Mount Field National Park, Salamanca Market, Battery Point Sculpture Trail, MONA: Museum of Old and New, Mount Wellington and even the Hospital .....but we cannot find a scallop pie anywhere ! We arrive in Brisbane and tie up on a mooring buoy at the Squadron Club where hopefully the kids will go sailing. During the week we go to all the libraries to do schooling at we go exploring at the weekends. We do a couple of house sits and the boys get to crew in the Hobie Cat races . We get some nice sailing in from Mackay to the Whitsunday Islands where we find the biggest lizards we have ever seen and the whitest sand. Darroch also has a taste of a green tree weaver ant . We heard that the Indonesian check in system for yachts was going online so we decided to try and do it ourselves without an agent like a few other boats had done it before us. Apart from a little patience it was so far quite simple . Once on our way, we sailed on and continued to dodge the bizarre selection of Fish Attraction Devices thst were floating around everywhere. Some even looked like floating homes . The wind died down so we stopped in an idylic cove called turtle bay where we dropped our anchor and tied up shorelines next to our buddy boat " Teatime". We spent many serene days completing a few boat jobs, playing on the beach, watching the hermit crabs and cleaning up the plastic. A squall awoke us from our dream so we started to plan our journey to reach the next destination....Sorong here we come !
