Episode #158 : Sailing Dreams : A Second Chance

Hello Friends,

This is the first episode in a mini-series we are doing titled "Sailing Dreams" that will follow us to the Pacific Northwest where we help our friend Tim "SIX" rebuild the mast step on his new 1981 Panda 40 "SV Decatur"

Tim suffered a major heart attack in March of 2019 and was dead for 26 minutes. Luckily it happened at work in the Power Plant where he works as a Lead Control Operator and his plants emergency response team refused to give up blasting him with 6 AED's until they brought him back. He was airlifted to the hospital and underwent surgery.

Tim followed our channel for sometime and became one of our Patrons on Patreon in April of 2019. Five months after his heart attack Tim visited Triteia in Los Angeles and we talked about diving, sailing and dreams.

Fast Forward to April of 2020 and Tim, knowing life could be taken away at a moments notice, found his dream boat in Seattle. It was a 1981 Panda 40 that was stunningly beautiful and had been well cared for except that during the survey the surveyor found the mast step had completely failed and was crushed under the 500lb mast and rigging that had surely been tightened over the years to accommodate for the sinking mast.

This mini series will show you our trip up and what we filmed of me rebuilding the mast step to get Tim sailing and moving forward with his dreams!

With the new warranty repair team from Leopard Catamarans still not here, we kept ourselves busy getting things done around our Leopard 45 Catamaran.

Nino began painting the custom bow art on the yacht, using the huge vinyl stencils we had printed and applied earlier in the year. It was a project that was initiated by the previous contractor that we're looking forward to seeing done!

Tynan headed out to watch the 2024 Trinidad & Tobago Great Race, an annual offshore powerboat race that satisfied his love for big engines and fast vehicles.

Meanwhile Trent and I were smashing out boat jobs and paperwork in between caring for our rescued foster dog Cheems. A Trinidadian stray dog, we've taken her off the streets and are getting her ready to find a forever home, but a visit to the vet found a pesky parasite we need to deal with.

We also had supplies from Leopard arrive, that needed to be sorted out and stored, especially since there's more on the way!

THE AWESOME FOLDING TROLLEY! (SERIOUSLY, WE LOVE IT)

I think this is going to be the future for catamarans.
Less diesel burning, more sail and electric, and quiet smooth ride is what every sailor seeks in my opinion.
ITA catamarans is bringing that to the table and im sure many will follow.

Episode #274 : Season 9 : The South Pacific

Hello Friends,

On this episode I make my way to the largest sacred Marea site in Polynesia, the legendary Taputapuatea (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taputapuatea_marae) and spend the morning soaking in its ancient history! I then haul up and make way for Faaroa Bay and hop in the dinghy for a river adventure, which was one of my favorite adventures of the entire cruising season!

Our Galley Upgrade article 👉 👉 https://www.travelsketchsailin....g.com/post/upgrades-

During our extended stay on the hardstand for new boat warranty (374 days and counting!) we've completed a few projects for ourselves that make us feel just a little bit better about being stuck here while our Leopard 45 catamaran is repaired.

This week, in between doing various warranty jobs ourselves that we hope they pay us back for, we installed some new kitchen equipment in our yacht galley that we think is a functional, sleek and fun addition to the space. But while doing that work a fire that'd been slowly burning its way through the jungle in the surrounding valleys started getting closer and closer to the boatyard. Ash rained down on the yachts as we wondered how close it would get to the shipyards.

We also had great step forward in warranty and boat work, with the arrival of certain materials we desperately needed for repairs. Hopefully it'll start being applied soon!

Last month, I went to the Cannes Yachting festival and became a first time yacht owner as we ordered a brand-new catamaran! But was buying a brand new yacht the right decision?

Well in this video I'll take you behind the scenes of our yacht buying journey from the last couple of years, as we search to try and find a used Excess 11 catamaran. We'll dive into one of the biggest decisions for anyone considering buying a boat: should you buy brand-new or go second hand, and we'll discuss what should you consider when buying a new boat.

Which is better, New Vs used? Let's find out!

Episode #271 : Season 9 : The South Pacific

Hello Friends,

On this episode I finally get a chance to explore the island of Huahine after the storms pass. I took in the views and tried to image Captain James Cook's boat, Resolution anchored near to Triteia sharing the same view! I then made my way walking around the island visiting the ancient religious mareas before making to the freshwater creek that is home to the famous sacred blue eyed eels. It was incredible to see these creatures (again... after first seeing a few in Moorea).

I walked a total of 17 miles that day and my legs were worse for wear for a few days after!

This is a great example in why I normally don't do buddy sailing. Underway I discovered more and more problems not only with their boat but also the crew. This is a serious video with no script or acting only sharing the reality. The oceans don’t care if you’re a nice or sympathetic person, it threatens everyone the same. And disrespectful approach to oceans will cost your life. The aftermath from this sailing was pretty chocking to me. Owner of the boat I assisted don’t have money to keep up with maintenance making sure the boat is seaworthy. And the captains lack of understanding his responsibility and safety for his crew and himself is seriously questionable. On the boat side engine was not working properly, meaning they could not go above 1000rpm. No broadcasting AIS and no instruments working. No radar. A VHF only working 2,5NM when it should work at least 20NM. No satellite phone or modem for communication. Navigation lights not suitable for open water. No maps on the navigation systems only iPhone and the list goes on. On the crew side that should realised this is not a seaworthy boat leaving a marina late before a hurricane with no Jerry cans for extra diesel and already low on diesel. No sailing skills and obviously not understanding the incoming dangers.

My mistake was to believe a boat used for comercial charter would not only have competent crew but also a seaworthy boat. Their original plan was sailing to Cartagena in Columbia via Linton Bay in Panama. When showing them the weather and also the predictions for thunderstorms they asked to buddy sail with me to Bocas. Assuming they where at least capable of 5 kts and also willing to work hard to follow my route being the ones asking for permission to sail along with me. Meaning I had to delay my departure with one day, and even delayed this limit with almost one more day.

I have not shared everything here but I’m serious when saying this boat and it’s crew is an Desaster waiting to happen. All the ingredients for going totally wrong with a different outcome was here. If I had not pushed them so hard to get out of the hurricane zone they would been at the worst possible position and situation when Julia grew to a Hurricane. One of the two sailboats staying behind left next morning only 12-14 hours later. Meaning he was pretty close to us when I went back for my buddy boat telling them now it’s serious. His story is strong telling about the crazy weather destroying his sails on a big well maintained yacht, only hours behind us.

So I have my reasons also based on my decades of experience to believe this story could get a different outcome. Some luck that the hurricane did not form 10-15 hours earlier and grew a bit more. And the fact I did not give up on this hopeless crew. Nor the owner or it’s crew ever realised or understand this situation or the potential outcome. Some boats and sailors should stop

ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
I`m sailing around the world in my Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever I have time for it. Most of the time I sail singlehanded but occasionally I do have sailing friends onboard. Still in the Caribbean due to Covid and was supposed to be in Asia by now.

Even though this is season 4 on youtube I did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I have sailed several seasons in the Med prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and have also been an active regatta sailor for decades. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience as a captain in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway.

PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS!
I like to consider my returning viewers as friends. Rude comments and bad behavior equals banning from this channel. I'm more in for quality viewers than volume. I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things that might work for me might not work for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore. I enjoy sharing my mistakes as well as my knowledge and experience without trying to teach you anything.
Discussions around topics designs and sailing are always welcome. Personal attacks are from my perspective so low it qualifies for being kicked out of my Chanel permanently without warnings.
