I am fascinated by remote islands. Uninhabited. Which you can only reach if you have a boat. These Pacific islands exist. Far out in the Australian Coral Sea. Visited by birds, occasionally turtles. But it takes courage to sail there. Especially because I'm sailing alone. No one is out there to help you. And I know little about the dangers. Nothing should go wrong here. So, I start exercising.

This week we look at Cole Brauer's Class 40 Racing Sailboat used to sail her, the youngest and first American woman to complete the Global Solo Challenge Race. What can we learn about safety and seaworthiness from Cole's offshore sailboat?

In this episode, we are trying to modify the autopilot setup and address one of the problems that have been ongoing ever since I bought BE FREE.
I know lots of you guys wanted more details so this video is more detailed than normal and even some animated illustrations to visualize things.
Sailing is not only enjoying sunsets with friends, it's also lots of hard work.
So the cliche that sailing is fixing things in exotic places is actually more true than most of us like to admit.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WATCHING AND SUBSCRIBING!

You can also follow sailing with Thomas on other platforms for almost daily updated pics and videos, and even find yourself a new T-Shirt:

ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
Sailing around the world in a Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever we have time for it. I used to sail singlehanded and occasionally have sailing friends onboard. But now the permanent crew aboard BE FREE is including Gee from Holland. We are now exploring the pacific ocean.

Even though this is season 5 on youtube I did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I sailed several seasons in the Medetorian prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and have also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway.

PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS!
I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things that might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore.

Episode 37:
In this episode, we tackle one of the biggest steps in our boat repair journey yet: dismounting the floor almost entirely and removing the keel. This massive project spanned over seven hours, pushing everybody physically and emotionally. This phase felt like a huge milestone, leading us closer to the big survey we’ve been preparing for—an inspection that will hopefully reveal the full extent of the boat’s condition with the damage.

Along the way, we faced a tough decision that impacts our dream, and while it’s not an easy one, it’s another part of this journey we’re choosing to share. Join us as we push forward through the highs and lows of making these critical repairs, with more major steps on the horizon.

We apologize for having to blur so much in this episode to respect everyone’s privacy. Thank you for your understanding and for sticking with us on this journey! ♥️

More 55 proves to be the perfect performance-cruising yacht, easily converted into a great pleasure yacht. This yacht has been well thought out to bridge the gap between performance and comfortable cruising. Although well adapted for Mediterranean sailing, it would cope with an Atlantic crossing or two.

Episode 01 : San Diego to Marina Del Rey - with Sailor Commentary at the end of the episode.

This video documents the recent sailing trip I crewed on onboard the sailing vessel The Intrepid. We motor-sailed from San Diego, California to the San Francisco Bay area. 10 days, 111 hours at sea and 470 nautical miles. The uphill battle against wind and currents, sailing north on the west coast is no pleasure cruise.

The crew were as follows:
Tim Brill (Owner)
Cody Brill (Captain and son of Tim)
Nigel Howat (English Sailor/45+ years sailing experience)
& James Frederick (thats me).

I have a blog where you can read all the journal entries about each leg of the passage: http://allwaysbutstill.tumblr.com

I will also be uploaded each leg of the trip as "episodes" that will feature commentary at the end reading some of the journal entries and talking about what happened or what we saw on that particular part of the trip.

Please subscribe if you like the video, there will be more !

About the Crew Members:
Tim Brill was a professional mountaineering guide for many years and has climbed all over the world. A few years ago Tim bought The Intrepid, which became famous in 2008 as it sailed around the world by the youngest person to solo sail around the world (Zac Sunderland). Tim and his sons have completed the ASA certifications 101-108 and have several trips in the planning stages. Currently he is owns an Aerobatic Flight School in Reno, Nevada where he teaches people to fly and to do stunts. http://www.aerobaticcompany.com

Cody Bril is a 15 year old sailor and sailing instructor in Reno, Nevada. He is currently shopping for his dream multihull. http://nvsailing.org

Nigel Howat is certified Ocean Yacht Master and nautical handyman who owns a company with his partner Miel. They also do Yacht deliveries up the California Coast. He has been sailing from more than 45 years and has sailed the North and Mediterranean seas. http://www.nauticalknowhow.org

James Frederick is a Sailor, Writer and Artist who currently resides in Los Angeles.

It's 3 years as we are on this amazing crazy journey... 30 countries visited almost 20,000 NM sailed and so much experienced! It takes us all the way back in Caribbean, where we started via Panama Canal across the Pacific Ocean to New Zealand and up to Thailand, where we are now.
Believe me it wasn't easy to pick the best shots from so many and compile it to less than 20 minutes of Awesomeness.

We have been crazy busy since the mast went up, working long days to get our Leopard 45 Catamaran across the line and ready to at least be back in the water by the end of the year.

This episode we share 10 jobs that have happened in the week or so between Leopard Catamaran's warranty repair team departing and what should be our last week living in a Trinidadian shipyard (there's an update on that too!), including mast work and redoing repairs we thought were done.

Did you know that a Leopard Catamaran can come with a secret aquatic ecosystem? That you could be unknowingly and secretly smuggling amoebas across borders? Issues in the deck penetrations were found in many places, including around the anchor well. What we didn't expect to find was another hidden water storage area inside the boat filled with SALT WATER, that was only discovered when it was ground open and the water fell on top of Nino's head! Nino has never been the same since and now has random outbreaks from his exposure to the pond water.

We show the whole process from start to finished, including problem areas being ground out, the salt water being discovered then cleaned, how it got in, and the repair process which has only just been finished by Nino from Stickells Marine.

If you have concerns about a window leaking we HIGHLY recommend Flex tape. It's a rubberised, waterproof tape that held the window for longer than the factory installation managed.

👉 Flex Tape - https://amzn.to/3EOujU9

For handover help including the HANDOVER CHECKLIST just visit https://www.travelsketchsailin....g.com/yachthandover.

Over time a number of issues have been detected with the windows and skylights fitted to our 2021 Leopard 45.

In this video, Tynan shares some of his experiences from Cape Town when he was working with Trent to detect leaks and attempt to get defects rectified, we explain which window has been replaced 3 times so far (and still leaks!) and detail the terrifying experience the boys had out in the Atlantic Ocean when the owners cabin window started separating from the hull while sailing the yacht to Europe. We also take a quick look to see if ours is the only Leopard Catamaran that has experienced issues with the windows separating from the hull.
