A medley of some of the clips from our delivery from La Rochelle, France to Port Ginesta near Barcelona, Spain.
We experienced some pretty rough conditions on this trip, but the boat handled it well. Great fun.
This video provides a step-by-step guide to determining the Gyro Error and the deviation using the Sun’s amplitude, based on the formula: Sin Amp = Sin Dec / Cos Lat. It demonstrates two methods for finding the deviation when variation is applied to the total error.
Additionally, the video corrects an error from Parts 1 and 2 regarding the proper naming of the Sun’s amplitude suffix.
Amplitude refers to the angular distance of a celestial body (such as the Sun or Moon) measured along the horizon—from the East point when the body is rising, or from the West point when it is setting.

This video explains the concept of Angle of Loll and its difference from Angle of List. Also includes the causes of Angle of Loll and its corrective measures.
Angle of loll refers to the angle at which a vessel will come to rest if she is floating in still water when she is heeled over to either port or starboard.

With little time to go we made sure Liger was ready to have the mast put back on and be relaunched before our Italian visa ran out. While our departure from Monfalcone was delayed slightly by bad weather, it was okay as it gave us time to carefully tension the rigging using our new Dillion tension meter and make sure everything was stowed and ready to make the passage to Split, Croatia. After 3 months on the hard stand, we are happily back in the water!

Initially I wanted to sail to Penrhyn, the northernmost Cook Islands. Instead, I end up in a Doldrum area, a stationary calm zone. New plan, new course. Instead of calm, it becomes stormy. I drop anchor in the middle of the ocean, in Suwarrow Atoll. But that's where the problems begin. I'm sailing alone on Reykja, a 35-year-old steel ketch. My route: from Bora Bora, via Suwarrow, to Samoa, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
While visiting the Cannes Yachting Festival in France we met very nice guys - Chis and Heyden - both experienced an Orca attack close to Barbate, Spain shores.
June 2023 they were sailing Amel 55 from Lagos, Portugal to the Med and although both were experienced and believed to be prepared for that - it was still a shock.
They had been attacked for an hour by 8 or 9 orcas and had to be towed to the marina and repair their rudder.
As harsh as it sounds - they were lucky compared to the other orca incident that Hayden witnessed half a year earlier - October 2022, when the boat sunk and they rescued 4 people…
Join us - this is really unique!
All raw footage - at the end.
As of now orcas did serious damage for 60 boats and sank 3 boats.
If you would like to reach out to Chris or Heyden, here is their contacts:

I think there is no better time to review the year than now - and it was awesome - we started it just as we transited the Suez Canal and sailed straight to Crete Island, Greece, where we left Aquarius to winter out.
Meanwhile, we took off to the US - Miami Boat Show.
Finally, we were off to explore the Med - first Turkey - where we reunited with friends, visited some cool places, and almost lost our dinghy! Oh and let’s not forget - had our first and only ever red carpet boat shopping experience, due to high marina prices in Turkey we popped back into Grece, Crete island, and did some engine tune-up - and that was SUCH A DIFFERENCE! - she purrs :)
After Greece followed long debated Croatia, that we ended up falling in love, despite that one scary time when Aquarius got almost dragged to the rocks by the sudden Bura storm….
Next followed Italy - with fascinating fireworks everywhere, a bit inhospitable but we made new friends and we off to the French island Corsica, beautiful Bonifacio.
At this point, we felt in full swing like a nonstop carousel of fine places, friends, foods, and good times.
Cannes Boat Festival we liked much more than Miami and met so many AMEL owners, that I’m afraid at this point I lost count…
Then was Spain... Slowly it was getting cooler but we have no plans on wintering out 2nd year in the Med - so we move on... To Gibraltar, Morocco, and Canary Islands.. but - you have to see it yourself... Join us!
And thanks so much for watching 🙏

Let's talk anchors! What do you use for a decent hold on your catamaran or monohull? What is your favourite anchor and why? Please share your experience for us all to learn 🙏🏼
▫️
Let's face it, when you are out sailing, this is one of the most important pieces of kit on your yacht. I prefer to go the next size up than the recommended. Yes, that's more weight, but your anchor ⚓ is your first insurance on your safety and your boat.
▫️
Use a scope of 4 or even 5:1 (chain length vs depth) up to 7:1 or more in hairy conditions. Remember to add on your bow roller height. So in a depth of 10m your 'real' depth is 11m if you have a bridgedeck clearance of 1m. And remember, you are going to let out your bridle at the end. Take those metres off before you attach.
▫️
4/1 can be difficult to do in the Med when it's busy as many day trippers just let out 3/1 or even 2/1. Make a call based on the conditions and do a swim around. You can always let out more chain when the anchorage calms down at night.

This week I take on a LOT! We finish up two Samudra x Soul de La Mar Yoga + Freediving retreats which leads us into the Vertical Blue Freediving Competition. We had a lot of friends around, but were on a time crunch to provide fish (and the rest of the food) for the entire party! We speared about 16 fish in 3 days, wiped out entire grocery stores, and managed to get it all together. I have also learned a lot from this experience and gave a little update for my 2023 plans!

This is our second most requested video so far. We are sharing our upgrades costs and maintenance costs for 2017. We do not include any docking, mooring, travel or food expenses, but this should give you some idea about maintenance and upgrades costs. This video shows the difference between Dead Reckoning (DR) and Estimated Position (EP). It also shows how to determine them and which gives an accurate position.
Dead Reckoning (DR) position is the position of the ship determined solely based on its last known position, course, and speed over a given period, without taking into account external factors such as wind, current, or other navigational influences.
Estimated Position (EP) is the position determined from the DR position but adjusted for known external factors such as wind, and current.
