Season 7 : Episode #148 : A Passage to Isthmus Cove and Anchoring in a Steady Breeze
Hello Friends,
On this weeks episode we leave Cat Harbor and Motorsail around the front of the island to Little Fisherman's Cove near Isthmus Cove.
Little Fisherman's Cove is the only shallow water anchorage on the North side of the Isthmus and this was our first time anchoring there. The anchorage is narrow and squeezed between a cliff face and a mooring field. When we arrived it was blowing a steady 15 knots with gusts of 17+.
As we approached we could see there were 4 boats already anchored there Bow/Stern spaced out accordingly. Which meant we would have to anchor right in the middle of all 4 and not get blown into any of the boats or the cliff face. We pulled it off without any drama but it was a learning experience.
After we were sure the hooks were set we went a shore and then on a dinghy adventure at sunset to checkout the sea caves in our new anchorage.

The Anchor Setup - Part 3 - The Lofrans Manual Windlass
This episode is a Throwback project video, one of many I will be uploading every couple of weeks. As I mentioned before I undertook a lot of major projects in preparation for the Channel Islands trip and I shot a ton of video.
In this video I drill out the holes for the bow roller and windlass, prep them and refill them with epoxy to seal the core.
I know many of my subscribers really enjoy the refit videos so I will be working these in over the next couple of months. I just couldn’t wait to share my adventure videos, as that is the entire reason I worked so hard on these projects to allow me the ability to sail and explore new places.
Thanks for watching!

Hello Friends,
This is a bonus video this week! I recently paid for my captains license training and received the hardcopies of all the study guides and reference material and the plotting tools and chart that will be needed for the test and wanted to open it for the first time with y'all!
I am testing for the 25/50 Ton Masters license with the Sail Auxiliary endorsement.
I decided to go with the Mariners Learning System (even though I continually call it Institute on the video). I have no affiliation to the company I just researched and reviewed the Captains Training websites and theirs seemed to fit what I thought would be best for me.
You can find out more about them here:
https://www.marinerslearningsystem.com/
After I finished the courses and get my Captains License I will likely do a follow up video talking about my experiences with the process.
I hope this encourages some of you out there that are considering making the jump to getting your captains license!
Thanks for watching!

| Season 2 | Episode 19 |
Forney Cove Anchorage to Cueva Valdez Anchorage, Santa Cruz Island of the Channel Islands of California.
The last week of 2017 I took an amazing solo sailing trip to the Channel Islands. I visit six anchorages on Santa Cruz Island before sailing for Catalina Island and tying up in Isthmus Cove for New Years Eve. We sailed back on New Years Day enjoying sunshine, great wind and thousands of dolphins.
Forney Cove was very protected and gave me a great nights sleep. When I motored out of the anchorage the wind was fresh in the Santa Rosa Channel so I hoisted the headsail and was soon sailing! The swells were big and showed me just how protected Forney’s Cove is.
I had a perfect day sailing down the North side of Santa Cruz Island all the way to Cueva Valdez.
As I motored in to drop the hook I could see two baby dolphins playing in shallows and soon an adult Risso’s Dolphin surfaced next to me to check me out. My first ever sighting of a Risso’s Dolphin!
I had intended on anchoring at Ladys Harbor but Fagen’s book said you needed a stern anchor for sure due to the limited space to swing so I opted to anchor at Cueva Valdez and explore its sea caves.
While I was on my trip I started my first podcast and the first episode is up online now. The podcast is titled “A STERN VIEW” and is something of a cruising guide to anchorages and sailing destinations. Each episode is recorded on location and I cover everything I know about the anchorage from my research and experience at the anchorage.
I also kept a journal in my logbook and will be posting them as a blog with still photos. This will act as support to the A STERN VIEW podcast as will each new video episode that features the anchorage covered in the podcast episodes.
The journal and Podcast can be seen and heard here: http://svtriteia.com
If you like the podcast please subscribe to it on iTunes and rate / review it as it helps in the ratings! Please reach "A Stern View" in iTunes!
I will make the podcasts and blog posts available to my Patron’s before the rest of the public. If you would like to contribute you can do so here https://www.patreon.com/sailorjames
Also if you like this video please give it a thumbs up! It helps me get more viewers!
Thanks to all of you for watching and being so supportive with your comments and likes! It makes me really happy to know you like the videos and to hear your feedback.

Season 7 : Episode #142 : A Rolly Night & a Great Day!
On this episode we awake after a sleepless night on the hook in a very unprotected part of the anchorage at Little Harbor. After hauling up and moving the boat to a more protected spot we explored the shore side a bit and Camille enjoyed some sunbathing in the nude.
In the afternoon we went on our 3rd attempt to locate the stern anchor and ground tackle we had lost the previous day and CAMILLE FOUND IT! How she found it is a mystery to me because the visibility was less than a foot! we had been swimming back and forth in the area we thought it was and Camille was diving down the bottom and back every so often and saw the white rope rode.
We were VERY happy to retrieve this much needed ground tackle and anchor!

Hello Friends,
This is a video where I explain the system I used to sail my 30 sailboat 1000 miles / 18 days to Hawaii using a rigid sea drogue for steering after my rudder was disabled due to striking a submerged object.
I have made a "Manual" that is available for free download and can be saved as a PDF or printed out and placed on your boat for future reference in case you every find yourself with no steering. You can view and download the manual here: https://drive.google.com/file/....d/1-FhlqqLVhGC0KgQnx
In this video I break down he basics and explain what you need for setting up a system before hand and give you suggestions for improvising a system on the fly. I also talk about the process of learning how to tune the system and what worked for me. Different types of boats will have slightly different set ups and needs but with this information you should be able to work something out that fits your vessel.
A long format episode documenting my ocean passage that resulted in my steering loss can be seen here: https://youtu.be/1AZXXKj0p0s

SEASON 6 / The Haul Out : Episode #122 : Getting the shaft.... out
Hello Friends,
On this weeks episode we hire the Ventura Harbor Boat Yard to help us pull out our prop shaft so we can change the cutlass bearing and remove my archnemesis THE PACKING NUT.
BUT FIRST!!!!!! Our high-water alarm goes off due to heavy rains and all the plumbing on the boat being removed for the new seacocks to go in 😂
The Yard sent Ernie over (We love this guy, super funny and super smart) and he applied MAP gas to the shaft coupler and kept working it with a slide hammer until we finally got it free and out of the boat.
then came a shocking discovery.....

Hello Friends,
On this weeks episode I introduce our viewers to the incredible Lagun Table Leg System. This is a modular table leg that can easily swing around out of the way and lock down to stay stable when needed. It can also break down into its individual parts and become self contained on the bottom of the table making the entire set up able to be stowed away.
I first learned about this on Dawn Treader's Channel ( https://www.youtube.com/channe....l/UChVCFPfAhNhT7zKtv ) and then later saw that Mads from Sail Life had installed one on his first boat as well.
I ordered mine a few days after watching Dawn Treader install one on their 1966 Allied Seawind and I am SO STOKED with it!
I bought mine on eBay as a "Factory Second" for $149 but for the life of me I can't figure out what is wrong with it as I didn't notice any scratches or blemishes. They can be bought brand new at https://www.lagunusa.com for $189 (at the time of this video posting)
I hope this video introduces this amazing tool to some of you out there with limited space on your boat that would love a table that easily swings out of the way!

Episode 353 : Season 11 : The South Island of New Zealand - Aotearoa
Hello Friends,
On this episode we explore Waihinua Bay and wait out some bad weather, wake up with flat batteries (due to too much tea being boiled during said bad weather) and find ourselves motoring through 50+ knot gusts as we make our way to Kenepuru Sound to ride out even more rough weather.
This was only our 3rd day on the boat together and we worked like a well oil machine tackling the challenges which included the dinghy flipping over not once but twice. Rhonda was such a good sport about all the rough weather, being Kiwi she is well use to this kind of extreme weather.

Episode #224 : Season 8 : The Hawaiian Adventures
Hello Friends,
On this weeks episode I awake under anchor at Kaneohe Bay to the lush smell of the rainforest blowing into the cabin from a light offshore breeze. After a beautiful sunrise and some morning coffee I head over to He'eia Boat Harbor to pick up Kimberly Wood ( https://linktr.ee/Saltybutterfly ) , professional photographer and all around adventurer, to join me for some exploration of Kaneohe Bay.
Our first stop was to check out the famous Sandbar at Kaneohe. The Sandbar is a large submerged "beach" or sorts that at low king tides is exposed but for most of its life it sits in 2-4 feet of water. It is a popular boating site with the locals and a very unusual experience.
We went on to explore several of the countless coral reefs that around scattered around the bay and saw a great number of fish, a spotted eagle ray, and sea turtles.
After dinner we did some night snorkeling and had some fun encounters with a schooling banner fish who kept coming around to check me out.

SEASON 6 / The Haul Out : Episode #120 : Bottom Paint, Cockpit Drains and Seacock Bases
Hello Friends,
On this episode I show you an easy way to enlarge holes on the bottom for your boat. We needed to do this to oversize the cockpit drains from 1.25 to 1.5 so water will drain from the cockpit quicker when we take a large wave over the stern at sea... aka get pooped.
We also knock out the first coat of Antifouling paint on the bottom, which was VERY satisfying!
After that I sit down and show you how I went about making custom bases out of G10 fiberglass board for our bronze Groco Triflang seacocks. Each of the bases was tapped to receive a silicone bronze bolt that the Seacock bolts onto.
