I am fascinated by remote islands. Uninhabited. Which you can only reach if you have a boat. These Pacific islands exist. Far out in the Australian Coral Sea. Visited by birds, occasionally turtles. But it takes courage to sail there. Especially because I'm sailing alone. No one is out there to help you. And I know little about the dangers. Nothing should go wrong here. So, I start exercising.

Allein segeln heisst: Keine Crew, kein Streit, kein schlechtes Essen. Es gibt nur mich. Für alles bin ich verantwortlich. Ich bin frei. Alleinsegeln heisst aber auch: Gefahr. Wann schlafe ich? Was, wenn ich krank werde? Es gibt keine Segelkurse und wenig Bücher. Dir bleibt learnig by doing. Du machst Fehler und im besten Fall lernst Du daraus. Manchmal ist das hart und teuer.

I’m on my way to the Herald Cays, two tiny islands out in the Australian Coral Sea. But Reykja is wrecked. The motor of the windlass crashed. Shortly later the V-belt between the steering wheel and the hydraulic broke. Spare parts are difficult to get and take their time. But I can’t wait at anchor for ages. It would drive me mad. So I am pushing the limits and start this expedition. I will need to find solutions and improvise with the broken technique. But that's sailing.

My longest blue water trip, 35 days at sea. I sail alone on Reykja, a 35 year old steel yacht. It goes through the Panama Canal to Hiva Oa, French Polynesia. The distance is about 8000 kilometers. This part of the Pacific is remote, I don't see a single ship during the whole time. But many other things.

1700 miles south, 3000 kilometres. Just one stop, Bundaberg. The trick is to catch the right wind. In the Coral Sea it blows from the front for 10 months as a trade wind. But now, in November, it’s not regular. In the Tasman Sea, from Bundaberg onwards, it can blow from bow or stern. Sometimes it changes directions within hours. And it's almost always strong.

My first Atlantic crossing. I am alone on the 12-metre REYKJA, a 35-year-old steel yacht. It's going from La Palma, Canary Islands, directly to Domenica, Caribbean. The distance is 2790 nautical miles, more than 5000 kilometres. It takes me 24 days.
I cross the Atlantic in February. Sailing in the trade winds is not terribly difficult, but it has its pitfalls. In February, the wind blows stronger than in the months before. When the waves go up, the ship starts to roll strongly. Even sleeping becomes an adventure: where do I cling to without being tossed around? If the genoa, the largest sail, breaks just before the destination, you are suddenly quite lonely as a solo sailor.
My conclusion from almost four weeks at sea? Strong stuff!

For eight weeks in French Polynesia, I was enchanted. Landscapes I'd never seen before, friendly people, unspoilt nature. When I arrived in Samoa and Tonga, the feeling of flow changed. Suddenly everything becomes difficult and tedious. Why? Is that also part of travelling? I'm sailing alone on the Reykja, a 35-year-old steel ketch. My route: from Samoa to Niuatoputapu and the Vava'u archipelago in Tonga.

Tasmania is bigger than many people think - by far larger than any Mediterranean island - and a challenge for sailors. Situated in the Roaring Forties, with large swells on the west coast, caution is advised. I start in Launceston, sail along the north coast, encounter penguins and flocks of birds near Stanley. Then I head west in search of jungle and traces of the first settlers at Macquarie Harbour. An expedition that also involves dodging storms and crossing the jungle.

Lord Howe Island, 700 kilometres from Sydney, in the Pacific. UNESCO World Heritage Site. These 700 kilometres are tough. Lots of wind, waves, broken equipment and seasickness. It's winter, time for storms. Winter storms.

Sailing alone means: no crew, no arguments, no bad food. It's just me. I'm responsible for everything. I am free. But sailing alone also means: danger. When do I sleep? What if I fall ill? There are no sailing courses and only a few books. You have to learn by doing. You make mistakes and in the best case you learn from them. Sometimes that's hard and expensive.

To understand the full extent of our sailboat’s damage, we’re taking it apart—inside and out. The next big step? Unstepping the mast, which is a huge risk on land. Our mast runs straight through the deck into the saloon, meaning a massive crane is needed to carefully lift it without compromising the boat’s stability on the stands.
