Season 7 : Episode #146 : Catalina Island BY SEA (part 2)

Hello Friends,

This weeks episode is broken up into TWO parts. The First Part is Camille and Mister Steady's hike on the Trans-Catalina Trail from Little Harbor to the Isthmus. The Second Part is James' slow sail from Little Harbor to Catalina Harbor. (Part 1: https://youtu.be/ceJmXt_fIjE )

On Part 2 James departs the very rolly anchorage of Little harbor and enjoys a nice slow sail flying the 150 gennaker sailing at between 1 and 2 knots in the light breeze. The distance between the harbors is only 3 nm so after a mellow sail James found a spot to drop the hook at Catalina Harbor and waited for Camille and Mister Steady's Arrival!

Episode #162 : Sailing Dreams : STEP UP!

Hello Friends!

On this weeks episode we re-step the mast on SV Decatur. A rather surgical process especially considering that we had to first sit it down on the mast shoe, align it, mark the shoe then pull it up high enough for me to get under it to work and fasten the shoe into place.

The entire process went off without a hitch ! and we get SV Decatur turned back into a sail boat!

Season 8 : The Hawaiian Adventures : Episode #218

Hello Friends,

On this episode I get a fly by from a Blackhawk Helicopter piloted by my friend Bryan Wilson (Thank you for your service and the fly by)

Then I go on a dinghy excursion to look for a good place to snorkel. Traveling north through incredibly clear waters I turn back at Yokohama Beach and return to Triteia. Once back onboard I swim ashore and walk south down Makua Beach to explore the extensive reef system that makes up the southern end of the bay.

I enjoy my last golden hour on the beach and try and take it all in.

A special episode featuring a boat tour of the J42, Sailing Vessel Thylacine. Captain Noah Peffer walks us through Thylacine and her features and some of his plans as he and his wife Alex prepare for full-time cruising in the very near future.

Noah Peffer is an educator at the University of Southern California... I stole the below text from their website.

Captain Noah Peffer, Lecturer and Vessel Captain
Captain Peffer Graduated from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston with a two bachelors in Art and Education in 2000 and promptly moved to Los Angeles. In 2005 he completed a graduate degree in art at Cal Arts and has been working as a conceptual artist, carpenter, fabricator and teacher in Los Angeles for the past decade. Captain Peffer grew up sailing the East Coast and Bahamas on the David Stevens schooner Sarah Abbott (sister ship to Atlantas!) with his family. The son of a wooden boat owner he was raised in and around boatyards and developed an interest in traditional sailing craft while simultaneously racing on everything from 420’s, to Shields, to Schooners, to ocean racing ULDB’s. Captain Peffer has cruised in many parts of the world but always returns to Southern California. He is also a Lecturer at Cal State University Long Beach in the Wood Department.

Follow SV Thylacine on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/svthylacine

There is a VERY special episode of "A STERN VIEW PODCAST" this week corresponding with this video episode. On New Years Eve I interviewed Alex and Noah onboard Thylacine while on a mooring at Cat Harbor about their time cruising the Sea of Cortez in 2009. You can listen to it here: https://soundcloud.com/sailor-....james-664482657/bonu

Episode #276 : Season 9 : The South Pacific

Hello Friends,

On this episode I say good bye to Raiatea and make a short, but breeze hope to the other side of the lagoon to the island of Taha'a. With the Tradewinds blowing strong I found it impossible to make my intended anchorage and change course to find a safe spot to spend the night. The next morning I haul up and move out to the shallows near Coral Gardens.

A day sail onboard S/V Anduril with light winds and temperatures in the 70's we were greeted by a few pods of a Pacific White Sided Dolphins.

Anduril is a 1969 Islander Excalibur 26 designed by William Crealock. This was my first time aboard Anduril and I am a huge fan of classic plastic so I was stoked. Its always cool to see the details unique to each boat.

The skipper is my friend Neil Fletcher who recently purchased a beautiful 1966 Allied Seabreeze 35 named Arcturus that he will be sailing throughout the Stockholm archipelago this summer and further a field in the coming years. Make sure and follow his blog to read about his travels and to find out more about Arcturus https://theneilfletcher.wordpr....ess.com/?blogsub=con

Episode 322 : Season 10 : New Zealand - Aotearoa

Hello Friends,
On this episode I make way for Whangārei with an easy motor sail in light winds. Approaching the channel to the large basin that is Whangārei I test out the current and find myself fighting it for almost half an hour to get into an anchorage with more protection.

Make sure you stay tuned until the end of the episode if you would like to hear me talk about how I read the landscape of an anchorage to decide where I want to drop the hook.

THE FALKEN SAGAS: An Epic Adventure with 59º North Sailing Along The Viking Route: Newfoundland to Greenland to Iceland.

Welcome to the first episode of The Falken Sagas series. I left Triteia in her southern hemisphere’s winter berth in Whangarei, New Zealand and flew back to North America to meet up with Andy Schell and 59º North Sailing. Andy had invited me to join him on a high latitude adventure onboard their Farr 65, Falken, to sail the Viking Route from Newfoundland to Greenland, transit Prince Christian Sound and sail on to the West Fjords of Iceland across the North Atlantic. Along for this adventure was Andy’s First Mate Vilma and the crew of the Falken; Jim, Matt, Richa, Johnathan, Charlotte, Gavin, Alejandro & Nick.

I have made several long format films and video episodes documenting our journey and adventures. Starting with preparations in Newfoundland then our passage to Greenland, our time cruising in Southern Greenland and our passage to Iceland. All of the drone footage you see in the films was shot by Andy Schell, otherwise all the footage was filmed by myself on a gopro.

About 59º North:

ANDY SCHELL & MIA KARLSSON started 59º North to pursue their own passion for offshore sailing and to share it with other like-minded people out there who yearn to see what's over the horizon & learn about themselves in the process. We set an ambitious schedule, sailing 10,000 MILES PER YEAR making landfall in ports from the Caribbean to the Arctic, Bermuda, Europe, Cuba, Canada & more, with the world's oceans as our stomping ground. Since 2015 our team has grown to include some of our best friends and like-minded sailors – AUGUST SANDBERG, EMMA GARSCHAGEN, RYAN FINSTAD, LEE CUMBERLAND & RYAN ELLISON – all working together to pursue our passions.
In 2020 we started THE QUARTERDECK, a unique-to-sailing online membership platform where we dive deep on the art of seamanship. Members have direct access to us, we have a growing resource library of onboard checklists, SOPs, logbooks and more, and we’ve moved all of our LIVE sessions onto the platform for members only.
Since 2013 we’ve published weekly podcasts on sailing, and now have three distinct shows — ON THE WIND, the main interview show hosted by Andy Schell, August Sandberg , Nikki Henderson & Emma Garschagen; THE QUARTERDECK PODCAST, a more technical, companion show to our online platform; and SAILING STORIES, a unique, serialized podcast showcasing ‘tales from the high seas, told week by week.’ All of our podcasts are free, and always will be — available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.
If you've dreamed of seeing STARS DOWN TO THE HORIZON, if you yearn to LOSE SIGHT OF LAND for days on end, if you want to UNPLUG from the world ashore and TRAVEL TO NEW LANDS at a human pace, then join us for the OFFSHORE SAILING ADVENTURE of a lifetime. We'll see you on the high seas. HOLD FAST!

Episode #138 : A weekend trip to Avalon before the Pandemic Hit America

Hello Friends,

The next few episodes were filmed in February before the Pandemic took hold of America and California declared the stay at home orders.

On this episode we push off from Los Angeles Harbor for Camille's first trip to Avalon for some diving and hanging out with James' little brother Colby Thorp and our dear friend Jimmy Shannon.

This was our first adventure trip since the haul out and while the winds didn't work in our favor we still had an enjoyable motorsail to the island.

Episode 346 : Season 10 : New Zealand - Aotearoa

Hello Friends,
On this episode I depart Auckland with the intention of sailing to the Coromandel Peninsula. Shortly after leaving Auckland harbour I was excited to see a pod of four Orcas casually swimming by. In a very short time the winds went from nothing to Force 5 and building short period seas. Realizing it was impossible to make it around the Peninsula, I switched to Plan B and then quickly to Plan C, Running form Hooks Bay on Waiheke Island.

Arriving after dark, I kept in as close as I dared, dropped the hook and collapsed.

Episode #250 : Season 8 : The Hawaiian Adventures

Hello Friends,

On this weeks episode @kimberlywood-saltybutterfl262 and myself continue our exploration of Maui's anchorages and find ourselves in a dangerous situation at Molokini Crater with wind and seas pinning us into the small lee shore crescent shaped crater. Once out of this clutches we sailed hard on the wind back towards Maui and didn't like the look of "Big Beach" Anchorage so we continued on to the amazing La Perouse Bay.

The Anchor Test !

This video was for Patrons only but its been over a year So now I will release it to the public ! Thanks to my Patrons !

After getting the set up all installed I went out for the day with my buddies Neil, Christian and Carlito to test the anchor and get some footage of the first anchor drop.

Christian motored along side with his beautiful 1962 Tartan 27.

Much to my dismay my gypsy is the wrong size for my chain so I have since been on the search for the correct sized gypsy (either new chain or gypsy will cost me $400 unless I can find a used gypsy)

So this was the first time I got to haul the anchor up by hand, which my mama would have said "Hush up, its good for you, get it done".

I got lots of practice at this while anchoring at Santa Cruz island in December.

As I mentioned above this video is just for my Patrons and is free for you guys as well, thanks so much for your support!

Thanks for watching!

Episode #159 : Sailing Dreams : A Stuck Mast

Hello Friends!

We are happy to bring you the 2nd episode in the mini-series. This weeks episode has us with our friend Tim and his boat SV Decatur at Seaview West Boatyard in Seattle Washington.

We had a hell of a time getting the mast out of the boat due to the "Spartite" around the mast at the deck.

We highly recommend Seaview Boatyard ( https://www.seaviewboatyard.com ) in Seattle if you ever need a mast pulled or need to put your boat on the hard. Their crew was highly professional and knew their business!
