Hello Friends,
This is the first ARCHIVE video for my sailing podcast "A STERN VIEW PODCAST" that is something of a cruising guide in audio form. Each episode is recorded onboard at the anchorage that is being discussed or reviewed.
As I add more episodes to my soundcloud account where it is hosted the older episodes are removed due to space limitations. I will be slowly adding the earlier episodes here in this ambient video format allowing my viewers (and listeners) to have access to all the episodes new and old.
The first season of the podcast I talked about each of the anchorages I visited on Santa Cruz Island in California's Channel Islands.
You can subscribe to A STERN VIEW PODCAST on iTunes or where ever you get your podcasts.

Episode #158 : Sailing Dreams : A Second Chance
Hello Friends,
This is the first episode in a mini-series we are doing titled "Sailing Dreams" that will follow us to the Pacific Northwest where we help our friend Tim "SIX" rebuild the mast step on his new 1981 Panda 40 "SV Decatur"
Tim suffered a major heart attack in March of 2019 and was dead for 26 minutes. Luckily it happened at work in the Power Plant where he works as a Lead Control Operator and his plants emergency response team refused to give up blasting him with 6 AED's until they brought him back. He was airlifted to the hospital and underwent surgery.
Tim followed our channel for sometime and became one of our Patrons on Patreon in April of 2019. Five months after his heart attack Tim visited Triteia in Los Angeles and we talked about diving, sailing and dreams.
Fast Forward to April of 2020 and Tim, knowing life could be taken away at a moments notice, found his dream boat in Seattle. It was a 1981 Panda 40 that was stunningly beautiful and had been well cared for except that during the survey the surveyor found the mast step had completely failed and was crushed under the 500lb mast and rigging that had surely been tightened over the years to accommodate for the sinking mast.
This mini series will show you our trip up and what we filmed of me rebuilding the mast step to get Tim sailing and moving forward with his dreams!

Hello Friends,
Feeling unsure about the protection of the anchorage at Motu Faama, I decided to haul up and head back to Kia Ora Anchorage ahead of the Maramu winds that were forecasted to arrive later that afternoon.
After riding out a weeks worth of high winds at Kia Ora, I was finally able to head ashore, get fuel and provisions and prepare to leave Rangiroa.

Hello Friends,
This episode was filmed the morning after our Fourth of July trip to the island where we had a lot of problems with our bilge pump and switch.
I replaced our old cheap dead bilge pump and switch with a new:
RULE 1100 GPH - 4164 LPH Blige Pump
and a RULE Super Switch - Model 37A
This video was made to try and explain how bilge pumps are set up and how to replace them with an existing system in place. I hope this helps some of y'all who are installing a bilge pump for the first time or replacing a bilge pump on your boat.
Thanks for watching!

THE FALKEN SAGAS: An Epic Adventure with @59NorthSailing Along The Viking Route: Newfoundland to Greenland to Iceland.
Welcome to The Falken Sagas series. I left Triteia in her southern hemisphere’s winter berth in Whangarei, New Zealand and flew back to North America to meet up with Andy Schell and 59º North Sailing. Andy had invited me to join him on a high latitude adventure onboard their Farr 65, Falken, to sail the Viking Route from Newfoundland to Greenland, transit Prince Christian Sound and sail on to the West Fjords of Iceland across the North Atlantic. Along for this adventure was Andy’s First Mate Vilma and the crew of the Falken; Jim, Matt, Richa, Johnathan, Charlotte, Gavin, Alejandro & Nick.
I have made several long format films and video episodes documenting our journey and adventures. Starting with preparations in Newfoundland then our passage to Greenland, our time cruising in Southern Greenland and our passage to Iceland. All of the drone footage you see in the films was shot by Andy Schell, otherwise all the footage was filmed by myself on a gopro.
About 59º North:
ANDY SCHELL & MIA KARLSSON started 59º North to pursue their own passion for offshore sailing and to share it with other like-minded people out there who yearn to see what's over the horizon & learn about themselves in the process. We set an ambitious schedule, sailing 10,000 MILES PER YEAR making landfall in ports from the Caribbean to the Arctic, Bermuda, Europe, Cuba, Canada & more, with the world's oceans as our stomping ground. Since 2015 our team has grown to include some of our best friends and like-minded sailors – AUGUST SANDBERG, EMMA GARSCHAGEN, RYAN FINSTAD, LEE CUMBERLAND & RYAN ELLISON – all working together to pursue our passions.
In 2020 we started THE QUARTERDECK, a unique-to-sailing online membership platform where we dive deep on the art of seamanship. Members have direct access to us, we have a growing resource library of onboard checklists, SOPs, logbooks and more, and we’ve moved all of our LIVE sessions onto the platform for members only.
Since 2013 we’ve published weekly podcasts on sailing, and now have three distinct shows — ON THE WIND, the main interview show hosted by Andy Schell, August Sandberg , Nikki Henderson & Emma Garschagen; THE QUARTERDECK PODCAST, a more technical, companion show to our online platform; and SAILING STORIES, a unique, serialized podcast showcasing ‘tales from the high seas, told week by week.’ All of our podcasts are free, and always will be — available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.
If you've dreamed of seeing STARS DOWN TO THE HORIZON, if you yearn to LOSE SIGHT OF LAND for days on end, if you want to UNPLUG from the world ashore and TRAVEL TO NEW LANDS at a human pace, then join us for the OFFSHORE SAILING ADVENTURE of a lifetime. We'll see you on the high seas. HOLD FAST!

Episode 411 : Season 13 : Sailing Indonesia
Hello Friends,
On this episode we make our way over to Sebayur Island for a few days where we have an amazing time doing a drift snorkel in the swift current and an incredible hike up to the highest hill on the island, giving us remarkable panoramic views of Komodo National Park.
We then make our way over to Makassar Reef and pick up a mooring ball in its protected lagoon where we wasted no time heading out in search of the nearby resident Manta Rays that call these waters home. This Rhonda's first time swimming with Mantas and my third time. Each and every time is a magical encounter that I am grateful I had a chance to experience.

YARNS: Conversations With Cruisers Podcast - Sailor James Interviews Anette and Anders of SV Horizon

About the Podcast:
YARNS: CONVERSATIONS WITH CRUISERS
with Sailor James
Welcome to Yarns: Conversations with Cruisers. With this podcast I will be collecting stories of cruising sailors that I meet around the world.
When I was in French Polynesia I met a sailor whose stories were rich and fascinating. I awoke the next day regretting I had not recorded our conversation as I watched him sail out of the bay. That was the moment it struck me that I should document my fellow sailors stories to share on my YouTube channel as well as in the form of an audio podcast.
All of these podcasts are recorded as a video with only slight editing done in post. We start the camera and then start the conversation. Most of the sailors I interview would describe themselves as “Just ordinary people” and from time to time I will interview more well known sailors who I happen to know or meet, but for the most part I want this series to focus on sailors whose stories would never be told to a larger audience.
Yarns will be released once a month with seasons consisting of 6-7 interviews. I have spent 7 months collecting all of the interviews for this first season of the podcast.

Episode 413 : Season 13 : Sailing Indonesia
Hello Friends,
On this episode we arrive to the island of Satonda off the coast of Sumbawa. This unique island features lake at its center in crater of the volcano. Its last eruption was in April of 1815 as part of the Tombora Eruption https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satonda_Island
The depth of the lake is actually lower than the surrounding waters that Triteia is anchored in (deepest part of the lake is 226ft deep). This was a crazy thing to imagine as we looked down into the crater and lake from the ridge above. After a rad but very hot hike, the warm waters of the lake offered only a slight relief.
Later that night I had the very memorable experience of grabbing the handrail in the cabin in the dark to find a snake coiled around it. It turned out to be a harmless Oriental Wold Snake but this was only known well after the fact. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lycodon_capucinus
I hope to never repeat that experience, with any snake, harmless or not.

Welcome to Season 3 of my channel!
On this episode we depart the quaint village of Blidö with its beautiful Sandkil Ship, Helmi (http://www.helmi.se/en/about-helmi-2239848) and head north for (insert drum roll) THE ÅLAND ISLANDS!
We had a lovely quiet sail until then winds gave out then we motorsailed our way out into open water with the Gulf of Bothnia to Port and the Baltic Sea to Starboard. The conditions were so calm it felt more like a large lake than a large sea and we were happy to have a day of obstacle free sailing.
We arrived at Mariehamn, Åland's only real city at around 12am and the docks and streets were full of people enjoying the midnight sun.
I have also uploaded a corresponding episode on my “A Stern View Podcast” that is something of a cruisers guide to anchorages and harbors. This new episode and the first of the new season features Neil and myself talking about what Blidö has to offer and what to expect of the faculties. So if you enjoy sailing podcasts head please subscribe on iTunes or where ever you get your podcasts.
This season will follow my time on board SV Arcturus as we explore the Åland Islands and beyond. We sail into cities, tie up on small islands, anchor bows to and ride out a blow before heading back to Sweden. I hope you will follow along with us on the trip.

Episode 02 : Marina Del Rey to Ventura - with Sailor Commentary at the end of the episode.
This video documents the recent sailing trip I crewed on onboard the sailing vessel The Intrepid. We motor-sailed from San Diego, California to the San Francisco Bay area. 10 days, 111 hours at sea and 470 nautical miles. The uphill battle against wind and currents, sailing north on the west coast is no pleasure cruise.
The crew were as follows:
Tim Brill (Owner)
Cody Brill (Captain and son of Tim)
Nigel Howat (English Sailor/45+ years sailing experience)
& James Frederick (thats me).
I have a blog where you can read all the journal entries about each leg of the passage: http://allwaysbutstill.tumblr.com
I will also be uploaded each leg of the trip as "episodes" that will feature commentary at the end reading some of the journal entries and talking about what happened or what we saw on that particular part of the trip.
Please subscribe if you like the video, there will be more !
About the Crew Members:
Tim Brill was a professional mountaineering guide for many years and has climbed all over the world. A few years ago Tim bought The Intrepid, which became famous in 2008 as it sailed around the world by the youngest person to solo sail around the world (Zac Sunderland). Tim and his sons have completed the ASA certifications 101-108 and have several trips in the planning stages. Currently he is owns an Aerobatic Flight School in Reno, Nevada where he teaches people to fly and to do stunts. http://www.aerobaticcompany.com

Welcome to Season 3 of my channel!
On this episode we explore the guest harbor at Sandvik and make our way down the natural trail to Hamnö and the Seafarer Chapel.
Here is some info about the site:
The seafarer chapel was situated on the southern side of Hamnö, and was a small wooden building from the 13th century with walls around it. The chapel had a painted window and a brick roof, which indicates that it had an important function in the Middle Ages.
The monastery church, probably built at the end of the 14th century and in the beginning of the 15th century, was a large grey granite church with a sacristy and tower. The tower seems to have been built somewhat later, because older graves have been found under the wall, but most likely not later than during the first part of the 15th century. The ground plan of the church does not resemble Franciscan construction tradition, and it is therefore likely that the church used to be a regular parish church that the monks took over.
The Franciscan monastery:
Kökar is known to have had a monastery during the Middle Ages, Conuentu Tiokkakarlensis, the only one of its kind in Åland. The monastery was a Franciscan convent and is mentioned for the first time in 1472. It is, however, believed that the monks have been active in the area since the 14th century; first seasonally and then more permanently towards the end of the century.
A contributory cause why the monks came here may have been Hamnö’s importance as a medieval harbour and that there was a seafarer chapel on the island. Another reason may have been the importance of fishing for Kökar, which meant that a lot of people stayed here seasonally. The monastery activity was discontinued during the reign of Gustavus Vasa. All that remains of the monastery today are ruins, found by the church of Hamnö. On the monastery ruins there are nowadays a chapel, used in summer both for exhibitions and functions.
After I return from my adventure the winds kept building and I found the guest harbor had cleared out of boats in anticipation of a blow that was heading our way.
the next day the winds arrived and we rode it out tied up as the winds increased to 35+ knots.
This season will follow my time on board SV Arcturus as we explore the Åland Islands and beyond. We sail into cities, tie up on small islands, anchor bows to and ride out a blow before heading back to Sweden. I hope you will follow along with us on the trip.

Hello Friends,
On this episode I depart Maori Bay in Pelorus Sound with a lovely sailing 13 knots of wind forecasted as I make my way to Queen Charlotte Sound. As I rounded Cape Jackson I found myself in 25+ knots of wind that soon turned into 40+ knots as I entered the sound.
My tiller and tiller head broke as I battled the building winds and I found myself near land in 45+ knot gusts with no way to steer the boat...

Episode #245 : Season 8 : The Hawaiian Adventures
Hello Friends,
Taking my final departure from the Island of Oahu I untie and point for the Molokai Channel. After a thankfully uneventful passage to Lono Harbor on the Island of Molokai I drop the hook and start to get the boat in order.
As soon as I was settled the captain of a near by sloop that was also anchored in the bay made his way over and invited me to have fresh fish tacos made from a bonito they had caught a few hours earlier on their sail from Lanai.
Ralf and Wiebke of SY Flora have been cruising full time since 2019 and have recently arrived in the Hawaiian Island via The Galapagos Islands: Check out there blog here!!! https://syflora.blog/🇬🇧-english/
They also have a great instagram account with amazing photos, follow them here: https://www.instagram.com/sy_flora_crew/
I had a lovely evening swapping sea stories with them and look forward to following along with their Alaskan adventures via their Instagram account.

Hello Friends,
This is a special episode that features the audio from my latest episode of A STERN VIEW PODCAST along with some video clips from Rödhamn in Åland. This is me trying to spread the word and get more "ears" on the podcast or let any sailors out there that might like this sailing podcast know about it!
In this ASVP episode Neil and myself talk about our stay in Rödhamn and what cruisers can expect when visiting this magical island and harbor.
A STERN VIEW PODCAST is a Sailing Podcast that is something of a cruising guide in audio form. Each episode is recorded onboard at the anchorage that is being discussed or reviewed.
The first season of the podcast I talked about each of the anchorages I visited on Santa Cruz Island in California's Channel Islands.
I won't be doing this for every episode but thought I would be a good idea to spread the word about the podcast.
