At Rustler we won’t adopt new technology unless we’re sure it’s right for you. Rustler Yachts builds true round-the-world cruising yachts. They are designed to be safe, reliable and beautiful. Many of our owners will sail cross oceans to remote destinations. It’s here, where you entrust your life in the reliability of your yacht. Without internet or home delivery, you have to be self-reliant. For this reason, we usually fit a simple and robust electrical system into our offshore cruisers. A system that can be owner-maintained and repaired easily – anywhere in the world – with nothing more than a screwdriver. Our new R41 Motor Yacht, however, may only be hours from assistance, not weeks. Even so, we wanted to ensure you can rely on the technology on board. We understand the comforts and information motor yacht owners need and have come to expect. We have sought out the most reliable solution to offer these. We didn’t want to use a system that needed a computer and the internet to be repaired by a separate company. And we don’t want a small electrical component to ruin your time on board. We chose the Mastervolt CZone digital control and monitoring network as standard for our R41. In true Rustler fashion, it offers owners a way of manually overriding the network by moving a fuse. We have learnt and designed our system from the ground up, so we are on hand to help. Here's Simon, our head of engineering to explain more. ► Full test in Multihulls World N°199: https://www.multihulls-world.com/review/catamaran/excess-11-return-of-the-overlapping-genoa ► The Excess brand is all about the pleasure of sailing on two hulls, with off-center helm stations and a younger spirit in the choice of materials and colors... but now the time has come to make a difference on the water in terms of performance. The best-selling Excess 11, which has already seen over 200 examples sold since its launch in 2020, is recognized as a comfortable, seakindly catamaran - as witnessed by its many ocean crossings. But in light airs, it remains relatively heavy and lightly canvased compared to the benchmark in its size, the Lagoon 380. Even in the Pulse Line version (with a taller rig), the displacement was 19,850 lbs (9 tonnes) and sail area 882 square feet (82 m²), compared with 16,000 lbs (7.26 t) and 829 sq ft (77 m²) for the 380, i.e. a sail area to weight ratio of 9.11 m²/t and 10.61 m²/t respectively. The manufacturer has therefore modified the self-tacking jib sail plan to adopt an overlapping genoa - a configuration already in use on the Excess 14. This brings the total sail area to 1,028 sq ft (95.5 m²), an increase of 16.5%, which translates into a new ratio of... 10.61 m²/t! In the company of Excess Catamarans’ product manager, Hervé Piveteau, and sales manager, Théo Lelay, our colleague Brieuc Maisonneuve got the chance to appreciate the liveliness of this new Excess 11, particularly when it came to picking up again after tacking. ► TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Builder: Excess Catamarans Architect: VPLP Overall length: 37’6” (11.42 m) Beam: 21’7” (6.59 m) Draft: 3’9” (1.15 m) Displacement: 19,850 lbs (9 t) Upwind sail area: 1,028 sq ft (95.5 m2) - Pulse Line rig Mainsail: 592 sq ft (55 m²) Self-tacking jib: 236 sq ft (22 m²) Code 0: 581 sq ft (54 m²) Motors: 2 x 29 HP Fuel: 105 US gal (400 l) Water: 79 US gal (300 l) Cabins: 3/4 ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 500 multihulls tests! ► While the world’s largest indoor boat show remains a must-see event, with an exhibition area of 220,000 m² (just short of 55 acres) and 214,000 visitors (compared to 237,000 in 2023) from all over Europe and even much further afield, with some 120 nationalities represented – the 2024 edition will be remembered as a return to normality following two years of post-Covid euphoria. Some players are even nervous about the damage caused by inflation, rising interest rates and geopolitical uncertainties. For us, this 2024 boot vintage was most notably all a missed appointment for the multihull sailboat industry. Apart from a few sport catamarans and beach toys, only the Tricat 6.90 made the trip from Brittany to be displayed in hall 15, traditionally reserved for multihulls. With the exception of the Excess stand and the more or less consistent representations of a few builders (Fareast, Fountaine Pajot, Gunboat, McConaghy, Nautiks, Nautitech, NEEL Trimarans, Windelo...), the builders were clearly boycotting boot this year, making the ‘multihull village’ a deserted place. The absence of Lagoon, by far the world leader in the sector, is obviously highly symbolic. As for powercats, the atmosphere was a little less bleak, with the presence of the Prestige M48 and the YOT36. The Dragonfly 32 and 40 were be presented in Hall 16, alongside the monohulls. This is a long-standing incursion by the Danish shipyard, with Hall 15 only a few yards away... So, it’s presumably time to talk about the subject that’s causing a stir: if multihull builders no longer come to Düsseldorf, it’s because they don’t feel they get much consideration there, even though they have become the driving force of the boating sector. Faced with a somewhat old-fashioned vision, the multihull builders are unashamedly claiming the heart of the famous Hall 16, even if it means upsetting the establishment... we are witnessing a kind of war of the worlds, that of the old and its traditional teak-capped monohulls against the modern and its yachts built for living aboard – on two or three hulls.
