Crossing a frozen pond in the backcountry can be dangerous—but with the right systems, the risks can be managed. In this clip from our Baker’s Brook Pond expedition in Newfoundland, Steve explains how we reduce the chances of breaking through thin ice: testing the ice every few feet, spreading weight on skis, spacing out with ropes, and preparing for what happens if someone does go through. Backcountry travel is all about turning a potentially deadly situation into an inconvenient one. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! The 2026 St. Barths Bucket Regatta delivered everything the Bucket is known for: steady Caribbean trades, courses wrapping around the island, and a fleet of phenomenal superyachts pushing hard in close pursuit racing before the breeze built too much for a finale. North-powered teams were prominent across the scoreboard: V owned the Maxi 100 Series, nailing Thursday’s windward–leeward races and carrying that speed through the coastal courses to take the class win. In Class B, Les Gazelles des Mers, Hetairos* fought tooth and nail in one of the toughest fleets of the week, swapping places with fellow ketches until claiming both the class victory and the Bucket Trophy. Over in Class C, Freya (90') edged out Hummingbird by just 32 seconds in a nail-biting finish, keeping cool through a series of upwind–downwind battles. Geist* led Class E with smooth, steady sailing, while Perseus³* made key moves down the final legs to top Class H. Across the week our sailmakers and race experts were embedded with teams onboard, working through setup, trim, and sail choices in changing trade-wind conditions, while the Regatta Repair loft in Gustavia handled overnight fixes and last-minute adjustments to keep programs on the start line each morning. With the Bucket wrapped, all eyes turn to the next stop on the Caribbean racing circuit: the North Sound Maxi Regatta in the British Virgin Islands. #NorthSails #StBarthsBucket #NSVictoryList #Superyacht #SailingLife
