When we arrived at the anchorage, Holly handled the windlass while I talked through how we set the anchor. We’ve also got the anchor alarm running on a split screen, so you can see it working in real time, including when the alarms go off. The anchor watch is a custom Home Assistant setup that takes GPS, depth, heading and wind data from Signal K. It calculates our swing radius using the amount of rode we’ve put out and the depth, then keeps an eye on the boat for any signs that we’re dragging. If the boat moves outside the area it should be in, both our phones get an alert and the onboard siren sounds, whether we’re awake, asleep, or simply not paying attention. The remora fish, also known as #suckerfish are a group of fish species belonging to the family #Echeneidae. These unique and interesting fish are known for their specialized adaptations that allow them to hitch rides to larger marine animals such as sharks, #whales, #seaturtles, and even #Mantarays. The modified dorsal fin possessed by these fish acts like a suction pad and is so unique, it is called a “sucker disc.” With this sucker disc, they attach themselves to their host’s body and eat parasites and dead skin, providing a cleaning service that benefits the host. We even witnessed a procession passing by our catamaran in the harbor of Santurtzi. The saint of this city near Bilbao is Carmen and during the ‘Festival El Carmen’ Her Statue is carried from the church to the harbor. She is placed on a rowing boat, then the boat goes to the sea, seamen throw flowers in the sea and then returning again with the statue back to the harbor while the music is playing out of the harbor speakers. Impressive to watch this ceremony.
