Empanner c'est prendre involontairement le vent de revers alors que le bateau était à une allure portante, ce qui provoque un changement brutal de bord de la voile. On peut effectuer un empannage volontaire, au vent arrière ou de travers ; on dit alors virer lof pour lof.
