Today I rode in a beautifully restored 1957 MGA with my friend Tony a classic enthusiast @fastbikejp It wasn't lost on me that the car was almost exactly my age. I hope it's proof that with a little care, attention, and purpose, old machines—and perhaps old people too—can continue bringing joy long after others expect them to be retired. About me: I’m Lowell Sheppard, 71, sailor, author, and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. I’m the Founder of the Never Too Late Academy and Special Advisor to the International Forum. Through Japan Solo Field Notes, I explore aging, place, community, and longevity across Japan. https://www.nevertoolateacademy.com/ #NeverTooLate #Longevity #ClassicCars #HealthyAging #JapanSolo #Purpose #LifeLessons #AgingWell #MGA #ClassicCar
It's been busy in Les Sables d'Olonne this week as an intense stream of finishers swept across the line to complete their Vendée Globes. Each one of them is received back as a winner, victorious in their sprint around the world. And while the southern hemisphere is notorious for wild weather, and. remoteness the Atlantic has demonstrated once again that it can also bare its teeth.
In the medium wind, you need to get the boat moving forward before accelerating. It is not easy to accelerate from a dead stop. In order to get the boat going, it's the orientation to the wind should be closer to perpendicular, but no lower than a close reach. The trick is arriving there without sliding sideways which is using a combination of the sculling and easing sheet. You are permitted by #rule42 to scull to close-hauled then you must sail the rest of the way. You begin acceleration from below close-hauled because it is more perpendicular to the wind and allows the foils to grip properly. Also, the process of adding weight and heading up optimizes the speed in which you arrive at full speed. We consider the acceleration to be one of the most important fundamentals in our sport as it teaches control that can be applied to every aspect of boat handling and speed You might notice several other nuances in the video.
