A gennaker é uma vela nova que vem sendo utilizada desde 1990, principalmente para veleiros de regata. Ela foi projetada para compensar a diferença no ângulo de ataque do vento entre uma genoa e um spinnaker. O que importa durante as manobras é muito mais fácil do que com um balão, é a vela ideal se tiver uma tripulação pequena.
