The 45′ Downeast Cruiser Doghouse was designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built by New England Boatworks in 2005. She is capable of long-range cruising, yet is simple enough to be an effective weekender. Some of her many features include a shallow-draft, seakindly hull, planing speeds, extensive sound insulation, redundant equipment, and low maintenance. She was designed as a Downeast-style yacht above the waterline, with a modern chined planing hull, moderately-deep propeller tunnels, and centerline skeg to protect the props. The modern Catamarans are made for comfort and not so much for sailing, that means they project a very large beam surface and the anchor cannot be effective with more than 15 kts of Crossing wind. To make the anchor effective you must upgrade to maybe 50 kg witch is unrealistic for this kind of boats, so make sure you protect your leeward quarter with a round fender or even better a permanent fender that can protect from any kind of accidental touch to the dock during your backing as well.
We took quite a few clips of our trip from Cascais, Portugal to Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, though most are too big to optimise for the web. This one, however, best captures the crew relaxing whilst we bobbed up and down those Atlantic swells. Johnny on the trampoline, Tim showing off his balls and Dave reading. A rare sight.
