Alle 16.30 UTC del quinto giorno di regata, il 15 gennaio, il Team di Maserati Multi 70 prosegue verso Sud Ovest verso l'alta pressione a 17 nodi, con 12 nodi di vento da Est-Nord-Est. LoveWater ha fatto anch'esso rotta verso Sud Ovest e naviga all'inseguimento del trimarano italiano, che si trova 35 miglia più avanti. "Siamo ancora in vantaggio", spiega Giovanni Soldini da bordo, "ma la situazione è molto complessa e il passaggio dell'alta pressione si aprirà con il vento da dietro, per cui mentre noi stiamo rallentando LoveWater continua ad andare piuttosto veloce. È come se ci trovassimo davanti a un cancello, che si aprirà quando LoveWater ci avrà raggiunto: ne usciremo probabilmente appaiati".
