Most cruisers practice abandoning ship, extinguishing fires, and handling medical emergencies, yet we are far more likely to face self-defense threats than those other situations. So Nicole and I also practice self-defense, building the skills and mindset we will be grateful to have if/when they are needed. In this scenario we deploy a Byrna Mission 4 rifle and Byrna EP pistol against an unwelcome “intruder”, an aggressive “dog,” and stationary “threats” at various distances and directions. We start with the rifle and pistol stowed, incorporating movement, as well as quickly reloading both weapons. When I watch this, I notice a lot that I did “right” including- not muzzle sweeping Nicole, good pistol reload, mostly accurate shots, good verbal challenge, etc. There is a lot I can improve including- rifle was held too low during reload, I took too long to deploy pistol from waist pack, my stance was off balance with pistol, etc. What do you notice I did well? What can I improve? Is it time for you to train? These clips are from onboard the MOD70 Race For Water which is currently lying third in the Rolex Fastnet Race just ahead of her sistership Veolia Environement. They've just gone round the Rock and are flying! These videos showing Steve Ravussin steering the 6.5 ton rocket ship are from the last Friday of Cowes Week when editor David Glenn sailed round the Isle of Wight for a quick demo. We hit 30.7 knots between St Catherine's and Bembridge and despite stopping for half an hour to fix the main hull rudder got round in less than 4 hours. Eight of the MOD70s have been sold for a major world tour of passage racing and inshore round the cans stuff. Watch out for an upcoming feature in Yachting World.
