We voeren in 38 uur van Griekenland naar Zuid-Italie, en met nog zo'n 3 uur te varen, hoorde ik opeens naast me, een blazend geluid en opspattend water. Wat was dat? We zagen het spuitgat van een walvis op zo’n 100 meter naast de boot! Gilles gooide meteen het roer om en voer langzaam naar de walvis toe. Het bleek een potvis, de stompe neus was duidelijk zichtbaar. Het dier bleef nog zo’n 3 minuten naast ons zwemmen, op zo’n 50 meter. Bijna geruisloos en dook toen onder met de prachtige kenmerkende staart die in het water gleed. Ik heb het kunnen filmen. Dit was onze eerste walvis spotting vanaf ons eigen schip. En zo dichtbij, geweldig om te zien! Een potvis kan 16 meter worden, 45.000 kg wegen en 60 jaar oud worden. Het is de grootste tandwalvis ter wereld. En waarom zwom deze walvis dan hier? Ik keek op onze waterkaart. Meer dan 2.000 meter diep! Zo zeg, dan snap ik het wel. Wat meer onderzoek toonde aan dat de Ionische zee een belangrijk leefgebied voor walvissen is, omdat het water diep is langs de continentale hellingen, onder andere voor de westkust van Griekenland bij de Hellenic Trench en in het noordelijke deel van de Ionische Zee. De vermoeidheid van inmiddels meer dan 30 uur varen inclusief een nacht was op slag was. We waren helemaal enthousiast!

200 miglia. Un record! Il vento che ci veniva contro e le onde alte hanno frenato il nostro avanzamento per gran parte del viaggio, mettendoci tutti alla prova. Abituati a una velocità di crociera di 6-7 nodi, farne 3,5 significa moltiplicare x2 i nostri calcoli sull’arrivo, obbligandoci a ridimensionare il viaggio. Purtroppo R. (Un membro dell’equipaggio) non si è sentito bene, perciò abbiamo dovuto ricalcolare anche i turni al timone, perdendo ore di sonno preziose. Escludendo questi due inconvenienti, la prima parte della traversata è stata veramente pazzesca. La luce della Luna rendeva il mare un manto scuro ma non spaventoso. Après plusieurs mois de navigation, j'arrive enfin sur Ilulissat dans la baie de Disko, au-dessus du cercle polaire arctique. La navigation au Groenland est toujours aussi difficile, mais depuis mon voilier, j'observe les baleines à bosses et les immenses icebergs qui malgré les dangers rendent cette aventure totalement inoubliable.
