► Full test in Multihulls World N°194. ► On the agenda for the replacement of the NEEL 51: finesse at the helm worthy of a racing monohull, but equally suited to every possible use - charter, blue water cruising, and why not racing? The NEEL 52 offers various layouts ranging from 4 to 6 cabins, and even two separate crew accommodation areas. This new model logically abandons the Joubert/Nivelt stamp, taking on that of Marc Lombard Yacht Design – as with the most recent models from the brand. Forward, the three hulls feature a pronounced inverted bow: an excellent way to increase the waterline length without adding any real weight to the multihull – noting that the displacement is kept under control, at just short of 28,000 pounds. The NEEL 52 is capable of carrying almost 7 tons in cruising mode. ► TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Builder: NEEL-TRIMARANS Architect: Marc Lombard Yacht Design Length: 52’2” (15.9 m) Beam: 28’10” (8.8 m) Draft: 6’3” (1.9 m) Light displacement: 27,780 lbs (12.6 t) Mainsail: 1,022/1,098 sq ft (95/102 m²) Genoa: 764 sq ft (71 m²) Staysail: 344 sq ft (32 m²) Water: 158 US gal (600 l) Fuel: 185 US gal (700 l) Engine: 110 HP ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 500 multihulls tests! ► Full test in Multihulls World N°199: https://www.multihulls-world.com/review/catamaran/excess-11-return-of-the-overlapping-genoa ► The Excess brand is all about the pleasure of sailing on two hulls, with off-center helm stations and a younger spirit in the choice of materials and colors... but now the time has come to make a difference on the water in terms of performance. The best-selling Excess 11, which has already seen over 200 examples sold since its launch in 2020, is recognized as a comfortable, seakindly catamaran - as witnessed by its many ocean crossings. But in light airs, it remains relatively heavy and lightly canvased compared to the benchmark in its size, the Lagoon 380. Even in the Pulse Line version (with a taller rig), the displacement was 19,850 lbs (9 tonnes) and sail area 882 square feet (82 m²), compared with 16,000 lbs (7.26 t) and 829 sq ft (77 m²) for the 380, i.e. a sail area to weight ratio of 9.11 m²/t and 10.61 m²/t respectively. The manufacturer has therefore modified the self-tacking jib sail plan to adopt an overlapping genoa - a configuration already in use on the Excess 14. This brings the total sail area to 1,028 sq ft (95.5 m²), an increase of 16.5%, which translates into a new ratio of... 10.61 m²/t! In the company of Excess Catamarans’ product manager, Hervé Piveteau, and sales manager, Théo Lelay, our colleague Brieuc Maisonneuve got the chance to appreciate the liveliness of this new Excess 11, particularly when it came to picking up again after tacking. ► TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Builder: Excess Catamarans Architect: VPLP Overall length: 37’6” (11.42 m) Beam: 21’7” (6.59 m) Draft: 3’9” (1.15 m) Displacement: 19,850 lbs (9 t) Upwind sail area: 1,028 sq ft (95.5 m2) - Pulse Line rig Mainsail: 592 sq ft (55 m²) Self-tacking jib: 236 sq ft (22 m²) Code 0: 581 sq ft (54 m²) Motors: 2 x 29 HP Fuel: 105 US gal (400 l) Water: 79 US gal (300 l) Cabins: 3/4 ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 500 multihulls tests!
