Paul Exner who leads who runs the Modern Geographic Sailing Academy takes students step-by-step to go anywhere by sail. He teaches sailors the skills they need to sail in the ocean with confidence. This video shows him on a heavy air passage across Hawaii’s Alenuihaha Channel between Maui and Big Island in heavy weather aboard his Cape George Cutter 31, SOLSTICE. He has sailed hard for 40 years before he'd been in conditions that required a storm trysail and storm headsails. His students on this expedition had signed up for sailing in storm sailing conditions. Before a sailor can grow, they must surround themselves with bluewater conditions to establish a base-line from which mastery grows. “During the MOD GEO expedition you’ll grow as a sailor through hands-on practice on routes that you plan, influenced by weather forecasts you interpret — while you manage an ocean-ready sailing vessel to encounter a complete range of offshore and coastal conditions thrown at you in real time. This Competent Crew course is ideal if you have none or little sailing experience. You will become a valuable crew member and an asset onboard any yacht you sail on. You will sleeping and eat on board (Apart from the odd evening meal out in a pub or restaurant if you choose!) you will learn lots about sailing, life on board, and how fun it is. You will stay at a different marina or anchorage or harbour each night. The course is best taken over 5 consecutive days or over 2 weekends (a short and a long). The learning involved includes but is not limited to: Knowledge of sea terms and parts of a boat Rigging and sails Sail handling Ropework and knots Fire precautions and fighting Personal safety equipment Man overboard procedure Emergency equipment Meteorology Seasickness Helmanship Etiquette You will have a qualified and friendly instructor to teach you everything you need to know. You’ll meet like-minded people. There’s a good chance you’ll leave with new friends alongside your new sailing skills. There’s also delicious fresh food and fresh sea air to match. Each day is action-packed. We enjoy breakfast at around 8am or earlier, and you’ll normally be in a marina for a hot shower by 6pm. Supper on board (unless you want to eat ashore) and then if time a trip to the pub. We tailor each course depending on the wind, tide, and your preferences. Some nights we’ll drop anchor, and others we’ll tie onto a buoy. We will also go for an evening sail to try out sailing in the dark, which is great fun!
