The beginning of our 3600 Mile Bluewater sail from Canary Islands to Brazil. We set off in winds up to 35 knots and surf big waves downwind under reefed sails while the autopilot is driving. In a world where expectations begin early — echoed by parents and relatives alike, you’re told to grow up and do something remarkable. So I followed the advice. Joined the Indian Navy. Sailed on warships of various sizes. Rose to a Captains Rank. Was awarded the Nau Sena Medal. Married at the “right” age to a wonderful partner my parents adore. We have an amazing 15-year-old. And yet… something always sat heavy on my mind. I wanted more from life. So I quit a steady government job. Sold everything. And bought a sailboat. Maybe not in the way they imagined.
